View Full Version : 3L to 5L?

What does it take to change from a 3L to a 5L (not 5LE)?
Can valves/cams and the rest of the head gear be swapped?
Head ports and studs the same?
Fuel pump mounting the same?

Please don't say it unless you know. I've had lots of people say 'i think....' and i have since gone out and discovered them to be wrong.

I'm just about at the point of doing this. I've just got a few things to confirm first.
The bit i can't find out about is the fuel pump. Can i use a 3L fuel pump or a 2lt (I'm going to turbo it straight up)?

Thank you

mate easiest and cheapest thing to do would be buy the 5L and turbo charge it, or you could buy a 1kzte 3ltr out of a late model surf which is already turbocharge. You can get them from a jap import wreckers for arond $3000.

I can get access to cheap long motor 5l's, both allready rebuild and ones that need rebuilding. But to get a whole 5L is much more expensive.
As for the 1kze or whatever its model number is, there is a lot of stuffing around to put that motor in, not to mention i don't like those engines any way.

just wondering if there would be a noticable differance between the 3L and 5L?

there's a little difference but not much - u can feel a little more down low but appart from that very similar

Its not that there is any thing 'wrong' with them. Its just i don't want one in my rig. I'm after durability. The 1kz has a electric fuel pump. I would much rather have a mechanical fuel pump (such as the 5L). Also the 2L,3L and 5L share MANY parts (a lot more than most people think) so if i do have a brake down getting parts is not going to be nearly as hard or expensive. Plus all the messing around that is required to put one in (1kz) i prefer the 5L. Don't take it personally or that I'm saying the 1kz is a bad engine, its just my personal choice that i prefer the 5L.

Before any one says "then why am i changing to a 5L when its only a little more powerful", I'm actually changing from a 2LT not a 3L. I just said 3L in the beginning because i know exactly what has to be done to get a 3L in, i also know what parts i can swap between 2LT's and 3L's It just makes it easier for me and others to act that i already have a 3L in.

I like the 5L too - more modern and still simple with the best power - I know why u want to put it in - I would probly do the same - if I had a choice

a 5L will bolt straight into any of the "L" series spaces. it's pretty much the same motor but tweaked along the way over the years. It has about 20% more torque if I remember right from the 3L so imagiine that over the 2L and I think it raises from 60kw to 70ish kw again. I was going to get one when I replaced my 3L. But found a real nice 3L turbo'd in a offer I couldn't refuse. Go for the 5L

I've got a 5L in mine and with a turbo and waterto air intercooler goes hard. I looked at the 1KHTE from a turbo hilux and the wiring loom is the nightmare, and one engine mount needs to be changed.

my truck is a 91 hilux its got a 5L installed and turbo kit now i know you said this at the start but i cannot say im 100% solid sure that im right as i diddnt do the conversion. however yes they are very very similar engines same engine mounts and all and from what i have gathered getting sparesand such mine is using the 3L powersteer pump i have changed it got a 5l and the bastard wouldnt fit same alt same raditaor same air con etc as for heads i do not no and i dont wanna tell you they will fit but as they are from the same class id imagine they would fit just look at nissan motors the RB26 head can be fitted to the RB30 pretty simple i think a small mod is needed but the marry up so one would think the l series would ring toyota and ask

Cheers, this is great knowing that it has been done before and that the stuff i have found out is confirmed (same stuff). Before this forum i couldn't find anyone that had done this conversion.

so any body knows about the fuel pump? can a 3L or 2lt one be used? Like u can use a 2lt on a 3L.

check out the surf forum or outerlimits the guys there have a lot of tech knowledge. I know in the surfs when they crack their heads on the 2L or 2LTE's, the will put in a 3L head as they are tougher and dont crack so easily.

Hay Bricki, The turbo turned it into a completely different hilux, no need to change gears at all for hills now. It is putting out almost 70Kw at the rear wheels and 451Nm of torque. Have now fitted 31's and it still goes hard just uses more fuel, was getting 10L/100Km now with 31's 13L/100Km.

yeah, I really wanna turbo mine, and I also really wanna put LPG injection on it, and both would be good :D - I spose the intercooler would add alot to the install costs of the turbo - but i would love one of those too :D

Anway, I guess I'm just worried that if I go and spend all that money on the motor and then i have to get it rebuilt then I'm gonna be cashless

mine has done 320,000 now so I'm not sure if turboing it is the best idea what do u reckon

Na would look at getting a go lower Km 5L from a wrecker and building from there.

I run normally about 8-11 psi with max boost 13.5, I had to get the guy's at Denco to drop the max boost from 16 psi just for my own peace of mind. They were conferdant id would run 16 with out any drama's and were prepared to back it.
Heres a link to my build up

I have been wondering the same thing, im glad i saw this thread.

just look at nissan motors the RB26 head can be fitted to the RB30 pretty simple i think a small mod is needed
Thought Id let you know, they do bolt straight up, but there is a lot of other things that need to be modified on the block, like tensioner pulleys and so on, not as simple as people might think.

Me too! I'm trying to locate a 5L in Perth / WA ... Does anyone know where I can source a 5L over here?

Thanks

I have done the 2LT to 5LT conversion in my surf so when i have more time i can write down exactly what needs to be done. Don't have much internet access atm.

There is always the 1KZ-T non electronic motor. It shits all over the 5L with turbo. But a 5L can be built up pretty good. Or just go oversize in a 2L or 3L with a 5L crank for the extra stroke to get more torque. You will need to use 5L conrods though as the journals are larger.T he 3L and 5L take the same timing belt kits but the heads are a bit different I think but shouldn't be a problem. It's all pretty simple............

Yeah man would I love a 5L over the 3L, saying that I am happy with my 3L turbo setup and eagerly awaiting its transformation again when I get the d-gas lpg install early 08

Will get a dyno readout hopefully when its all done and let you guys know how everything went. Im expecting at least 80kw at the wheels purely on a fuel efficent economy setting.

so does all the 3l ancillaries bolt to a 5l? i wouldnt mind buying a 5l short block and being able to transfer all my stuff off my 3l like the alternator, fuel pump, air con etc

I Blew my 3L with 10 psi boost after 12 months because the compression was too high (just after a rebuild) so I'm a little reluctant to shove a turbs back on the 3L... it doesn't seem all that tough... I would much rather a 5L non turbs. Is 4K about the right price for a full engine jap import? That's what I've been quoted for the engine with IP and alternator.
