i went 4wding 2 weeks ago and got stuck and i was trying to driving up and i turned a bit to the right and a go to try and get out and big crunching noise came from either the front diff or front cv's. i got out and didn't hear it again.
and i went 4wding on friday night and had my front left wheel in the air trying to drive foward in low range.
and it was making the same noise got to another part of the track where it never made any noise before and most of the way up it was making the noise but not as loud it was a bit of steep hill on a lean.
and driving around on the front and steering in 4wd on the flat and going down a hill is fine.
but we went through this mud and water to get out of the tracks and its never has made a noise in mud or water and it was making it a bit coming through i was turning in the water and it hit a couple of rocks and made it.
so i think it is the cv's. but i could be wrong. what do you guys reckon?
all i know is the noise is getting worse the more i 4wd.
i was thinking of taking the oil of the front diff and if there were its of metal in it i would take the center out and look at the diff see how it is.
and if not i was just going to replace both cv's.
unless you guys know any thing of have heard of anything.

Ok you can test the cv by finding a good flat area of road (carpark) put it in low 4x4 and very slowly full lock right hand down drive in a full circle then reverse in a full circle, then do the same left hand down forward then reverse listen for clicking clunking sounds coming from front cv area.

FYI over 80% of cv that are sent to be reconditioned are simply cleaned and repacked with good quality grease and then sold as reconditioned cv's (oops the cat is out of the bag) shit did I say that out loud cv's are just cleaned up and repacked with grease shit I said it again

thanks for the help guys.
i went out the front yard and tested it out and it diddn't do much untill it put it up to a mound.
then i took to this sand pit i know and gave it a bit in 4wd and turned a bit.
and crunch crunch from the front left. so its the front left cv's
im going to replace both cv right and left and keep the right one as a spare.
i picked up 2 cv's for $147.5 off ebay. off the 4wd store.
and they come with a 1 year warrenty.

If you've done a cv you wont have any front wheel drive with an open front diff.
I woulda checked the hubs first as thats what comes off first but it's unusual for Nissan hubs to break that easy. Same thing too, if you've done a hub you'll have no front wheel drive.

yeah the cv is not broken a such yet. as i still have steering and drive.
but it is starting to go as the more 4wding it gets the worse its getting.
so i am replacing it before the day it goes bang and i have no steering and have to change it out in the bush.

if any of you guys do a cv have a look on the 4wdshop on ebay for the cv's
good price and comes with a 12 months warrenty as long as your not using your truck competitively and your tyres size is not larger then 15% from standard.
