I hear theres a long wait for Jeeps just now..how long have you been waiting?
I test drove a 4dr petrol last weekend and the dealer said the wrangler they had there was actually owned by jeep and they were taking it around all the dealers for people to test drive as even the dealers can't get cars for stock.

there capacity is just over 10000 a month - thats what they are selling
the turn over is less than 19 days from production the customer - most cars are 35 + days - a little world wide shortage
I wonder if that's happening with other 4wd's
Its a jeep thing ;)

Looks good. Nice colour, dont scratch it but!
I took a diesel 2 door wrangler sport out for a test drive on sat, not bad for a 2.8 diesel, cant remember if it was turbo, but had good pick up, especially at high, hope its the other way around off road!! The steering was a bit wisshy washy.
Then I took a 4 door rubicon out, in the V6, as they arent planning any rubicons in diesel, for now anyway. The V6 was sluggish, vague gear changes and the clutch pedal was giving me a stiff ankle, not much legroom, and no footrest. Was a different feeling getting back into the hiloux i can tell ya. I wasnt impressed by the V6, but the diesel was good. Should be the V6 diesel in the commander that they should stick into the Rubiscon 4door, then Id buy one straight away!! Ride was good in both, but could do with stiffer shocks, felt like a boat.
BRING IN THE DIESEL RUBICONS Mr.JEEP!!!!

No diesel in the 4 door Rubicon, but they do the diesel in the 4 door Ultimate Sports version, but its got 29in wheels, standard axles, std drivetrain, no diff locks (or option for them), no room in any of the models for 2nd battery in the engine bay.

What sort of mods Sim79? Standard mods, bigger lift, bigger tyres, bullbar, etc etc? Or something a bit more extreme??
Do these models need that after market mod that fixes teh driveshaft from falling out of the transfer case? I think its called a slip yoke eliminator???

They no longer have a slip yoke, the slip is in the driveshaft now. As an aside you need a real big lift before they fall out, the main reason for the SYE was to add some strength (shorter output shaft) and also to add a double carden joint to allow you to get rid of vibrations. There are guys running around with 5 or 6" of lift and no SYE, not a good idea but unlikely the slip joint will seperate.
Cheers

Thanks SteveF, I was pretty sure I'd heard right, and good to see they fixed the problem of the driveshaft falling out.

Nothing extreme it will be my daily driver, 35s, 3inch suspension lift, sliders, front and rear bars with swing away tire carrier, new diff ratios.

whhat did you think of the interor space. i really want to get one next year but am a bit worrried about interior space compared to the GU for touring/camping as everything we need/take fits nicely into the GU.
Also anyone know how you go about roof racks for the soft top or hardtop for that matter?

I saw on Ausjeep a guy had roof racks fitted to his hardtop with a basket as well. So its possible.
Size wise they probably arent much smaller than a GU the straight sides probably helps and to be honest I was surprised with the boot space they are actually a big vehicle. For me personally coming from the Lux its great size wise, from a GU would be different though. The thing I like is that the entire vehicle is made for offroading, right down to being able to strip out the carpet in about 10mins. I have been looking at a few vehicles lately, Discos, Prados, New Luxes and Tritons. And to be honest none of them have interested me but the Rubicon is a totally different story.
Although it could be called a bit utilitarian I loved it and if not for needing to consult the wife would have signed one up yesterday. I just want to do some more research on fuel figures, servicing costs and insurance etc before committing.

Project-JK.com - Jeep JK Wrangler Resource » Project-JK 2007 Jeep JK Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited (http://project-jk.com/?page_id=26)
This site gave me plenty of information when I was looking early in the year.
Has a forum section where many questions have been answered and check out the links on the right.
Only stoped looking because no 4dr diesel rubicon.
A shame because there are a lot of parts available and any option you can think of (roof racks- as per above post) can now be found. The sema 2006 link on the right has a vehicle with roof racks.

The interior space doesnt compare to a GU at all. With the back seats down in the 4dr version, you still have a bit more room, but with the plastic panelling everywhere and that subwoofer near the back door, not to mention the wheel arches and the steel rollbar, it limits the room to only absolute necessities. Would be a good option with a camper trailer, or trailer with all the rest of the goodies stuck in that.
I was the same, I would have signed one up straight away had there been a 4dr Rubicon diesel model. Will wait for a year and see what happers from Jeep Aust.
Overall, Id rate the truck as AWESOME, except for the lack of diesel engine and interior space.

I know the diesel Rubicon would be a great option but I reckon it would be easy enough to option a diesel version to a simialr level as the Rubicon with the addition of lockers, suspension and gearing. I wonder what sort of price difference that would be.
On a side note the latest Petersens US mag has a comprehensive suspension kit test with Donohue kit coming out trumps

I looked at that track, but the Rubicons got higher diff ratios, bigger pumpkins and Dana 60s instead of the standard Dana 44 axles/diffs. Would be alot of $ to get to the same level as the Rubicon factory stock. The dealership sales guy tried to get me to go this road, but then wouldnt offer any factory warranty when I asked if they'd do it for me! :D (not that I would have mind you), but Id rather just wait, see if any teething problems come out, and wait for the factory Rubicon in diesel, its gotta come out!! Or just wait for the ute version (JT? it think?) OR fingers crossed, wait for the GLADIATOR!

Rubicons don't have D60's they are D44 front and rear, the none Rubicon is D44 rear and D30 front. So you get a bigger front diff on the Rubicon with lower ratios (higher numerically) and the factory lockers.

But there are components for the TJ 35 that could be used to increase the strength issues, are they also applicable for the JK?

Yeah your right, ooops, the Rubicon gets the 44 in the rear and 44 in the front, the others are 30s (the auto gets a different one again in the front)

I too checked out if you could upgrade- became too expensive with a custom truck and no factory warranty. Just have to wait and hope.
would suck if you did this and the factory delivered the next month.
