I have had a noisey gear box ever since I put in a new clutch (drives ya nuts) turns out if you replace a toyota clutch in an 80 series with any other non genuine clutch EXPECT THE NOISE. Some bloke pulled his gear box twice before someone picked it was the non genuine clutch he had fitted, no problem with my clutch and for the sake of the dollars I am trying to get used to the noise.
who told you about non genuine being noisy? Toyota? Im getting ready to change mine soon and dont want a noise mobile. Ill bet genuine is a cheap option though :)

I just recently did an engine transplant and did the clutch while the engine was out used Terrain Tamer kit I picked up from Don Kyatts in Melbourne there is no probs no noise and the Terrain Tamer plate was a lot more beefier then the origanal clutch plate.

The noise I have is an exacerbation of the light growl when the truck is labouring in a low gear at about 1200 revs. The new clutch I put in was a heavy duty maxi trak, the mechanic that told me non genuine are noisey is a VERY experienced 4x4 trans mechanic and he said he has seen this many time when people come to him with my problem. I made an enquiry just this week and a genuine toyota clutch is normally $630 but at the moment they will let you have one for $400, I got my maxi trak through a contact and paid $220. If I had known I would have paid extra for the genuine.

Thanks for the info, Masterdiver823. It's handy to keep in mind as I'll need to do something about mine in the not-too-distant future. I have a shudderry clutch so I'll most likely do the clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing at the same time.
Can anyone tell me the approx. cost of the Terrain Tamer gear?

This is partly true of the clutches in the $25o+ price range, my gearbox mechanic warned me of it too.
Exedy make a clutch that is specially designed to reduce what they call "gearbox rattle.
I have 2 landcruisers with 1HZs,the one with the cheap clutch is noisy, the one with the Exedy is ok.
Toyota told me my Exedy Performance clutch is better than theirs,in fact they were selling them for a while;)
I paid $490 for the Exedy kit. I thought it would be stiff but its quite nice to drive

Is yours the standard , heavy duty or safari tuff? Ive had a few differant stories from differant places about the same clutchs. Some say Exedy standard is the same as genuine other say it isnt , and heavy duty is standard plate with more clamp pressure , some say safari tuff will have harder pedal pressure others say it wont.I can get a genuine kit for $399 or $359 for Exedy standard and $449 for HD , I forget how much the safari was about another 100 i think .

I got the HD ,everything costs more with freight to Perth: (
Safari dont make their own clutch that Im aware of ,so its probably the same in another box.
The only clutch that might have more clamping pressure is the Xtrem range from SA
I contacted them but couldn't be bothered with their dealer in Perth.
In regards to the gearbox noise in low rpms,I think once the gears are worn to a certain point nothing is going to cure it 100%

I have an extrem heavy duty from Adelaide clutches, very happy with it.
Slightly more pedal pressure, but ok.
