well as most of ya no i have a 1999 3.0d hilux. But the motor has packed it in we think. I am on crutches so i cant sus it out properly but im thinking the front piston is f***ed. Its so loud you wouldnt believe it. So im probably going to need a new motor. I have a few ideas but wanna no how hard they are. Put a 253 or 308 holden motor in which i believe is easy. Or put a landcruiser 6 diesel in. Will they fit as i would prefer a diesel??? I dont have a s*it load of money at the moment but its no good sitting the rig in a shed untill my leg isnt broken anymore. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated???????

but like i said. $$$ at the moment. I dont realy have a big income recovering from a brokn leg. But im hearin ya and i like the idea. Would i be better of going with a 253 / 308 POWER V8 of turbo me motor. I donno what to do.
how come you have the 3.0l diesel in a 93 model hilux ?

Just to help you make your mind up you can't put an older motor in than the age of your Lux, ie you need a motor 99 or newer, for it to be LEGAL and to be engineered, therefor you can't put an old 253 or a 308. This is however the case in NSW so you might want to check the legalities in VIC.
I think you would be better rebuilding and turboing your motor.
Just my thoughts.
In Qld if the motor was still in production its fine thats how I got a 96 1uz

how about putting a commodore 3.8V6 into it? I know they arent the best quality motors around but they are cheap and they go. just an idea.

I like the idea but engineer cert and comp chips??? What needs doing. Another diesel with a turbo is big $. I like the power idea

Y not go with a 1UZ-FE. Plenty of blokes in luxes/runners and surfs hav done it now and can offer u plenty of wisdom. Its an all alloy, quad cam 4.0L toyota V8 and they sound great believe me, Also thers kits virtually off the shelf to match the donk up to most hilux gearboxes. I think Dave (Twisty) is selling his conversion kit and gearbox.
If not Im pretty sure u can get 3L diesels as a crate motor for around the 3k mark, turbo/intercool it and have a pretty torquey reliable truck for similar dollars.

don't go the 253 or the 308. old crap motors. if you are going to go a v8 put a lexus v8 or something similar in it.
The toyota 6 is very long doubt it would fit in a hilux bay.
commodore v6 is an option. more power than a 253 or 308 too. get as newer one as you can. though if you are going to put a v6 in it why not just put a v6 from a petrol hilux in it?
personally i would be putting the original engine back in. easier to get insurance, higher resale, don't have to worry about engineers, and it did the job.

mate if it where me i would be rebuilding the engine and if you want more power then either go a turbo or get it running on diesel/gas or both.
Once you rebuild the engine if it is done right and looked after you should realistically be able to expect to see a goot 4-500 000km out of it

Resale is not a option as i plan to hang onto it forever as me bush truck. Its a milo to me as milo is to roothy. And done the job well en trully. I love the old 253 and 308's as personally i am a holden fan from way back with 2wd's (haha) Like i said its all a dollar factor so if i can get a hilux 3.0d cheaper than a v8 then im back into a slow world as im never in a hurry. And a lexus V8 is out of the question as they are way outa the price range at this stage. And i do a lot of DEEP water crossings so in theory a diesel is the way to go. But power sounds good from a petrol. can i do many over bonnet crossings in a petrol of only the occaasional one???

Made up my mind. Iv found a 3.0d with 140000kmh on it which runs good (better than mine did). The motor is getting put in, New clutch and all the timingbelt pulleys etc all completed for $4500. Should have her back by this up coming week. Hooooooooray.

Before getting another 3.0D I'd be investigating why it's packed it in, what caused it etc. and try to prevent it happening again. They are supposed to be good donks. It would be cheaper to rebuild than you think if it's just a mechanical failure in one part of the engine.
My brother in law in Adelaide (mech. by trade) reco'd a 2.8 for his workmates lux, the kit was 900 bucks and they got a 2nd hand 2.4 turbo for 700 from a wreckers. He's got a fresh diesel donk with a bit of power now for under 2K.
IMO rebuilding your own would be more cost effective and reliable in the long run.
Cripes, ur still on the bloody crutches?!

Thought of rebuilding it. What happened was the timing belt let go which i wasnt to impressed with as i only changed it 50000kmh ago. Think it was a terrain tamer brand. Anyway the whole top end of the motor was far***. Im happy just swaping the motor over with the new clutch etc for $4500. Then ill get some back on the injector pump, and the block.
Finally off the crutches but limping around still. Bit of pain through the foot but where i shattered my knee seems to be good so far.
