OK could you tell me is a gps and navigation system the same thing or different? iam looking at getting one for work as iam always going to new places round the place and iam also needing one for play time when we go camping so could you suggest some of the better models and prices. and do the maps work off road on dirt 4wd tracks? thanks

In most cases, GPS and navigation system are the same although you can get a GPS that isn't a navigation system.

This is a GPS

This is a navigation system

ooh 304,

A basic GPS will tell you where you are, the more advancedunits have inbuilt naps that will show you where you are. You can add waypoints and make routes that will guide you to a destination but it can be cumbersome. Navigation units are GPSs with built in routing software that do all the hard work for you. They are excellent in urban locations but most are not good offroad unless you can add your own maps and additional software.
I use a Navman navigator for work around the suburbs of Adelaide, it guides me to my destination, and if I go off the route, it recalculates the route again.
Offroad I use mt Meridien GPS, usually hooked up to a laptop with a program called OziExplorer. This doesn't do auto routing but shows me on a moving map display where I am. You can add waypoints and routes to this to guide you but it just points you in the right direction, rather than showing you turn by turn like a sat nav system.
