Hey i have an 2003 model hilux 4x4 and was wondering if anyone would have any information on fitting a second battery. There is limited space under the bonnet but has anyone done it or where else has anyone put theres. Advised to put in tray but not sure of that idea. Any ideas appreciated. I would prefer it under the bonnet!
im also curious as to how it is done, there are a few people on here that have done it, i think boof has it done and maybe brooksy.

I have a 2000 5le deisel model hilux which I have just done a bual battery setup on under the bonet which is very similar to the 2003 model. I had to do some modifications to where the air cleaner sits and I also removed the bottem resonator near the gaurd and a few othe mods to the air intake pipe if you want photos and more info please email me direct

I had mine mounted in the tray of my hilux in a battery box, Took it out now the car is on the market. I ran the fridge off it which was mounted in the back also on a fridge slide. I and put a cigarette lighter socket in the back on the passenger side just inside the tailgate for lighting it worked great.

Most fit them in the rear tray in a battery box, (can be removeable with anderson plugs) or under the side of the tray.
I have mine permanently fitted in the rear of my hilux, in a box (styleside and canopy)
You can use something like this to control them

Ull most defently probably hav to move sum stuff depending on which motor u hav. My airbox on my 2.8 runner had to be turned around and moved back and a new intake section welded into the side of it. Easiest method for u wud be to get a tool box bolted rite up under ur rear window in the tray and place a batt in ther.

I just finished my dual battery conversion in the 2002 hilux yesterday. Get yourself a battery trey from TJM for $130, move your starting battery into that as you'll never get a decent size battery into it. Cheapo 12inch battery trey where the original sat, $178 for a supercharge allrounder 105a/h battery from TJM, stick that in the new trey. Choose a solenoid, plenty of threads on these. I used Redarc, $105 from ebay. Few cables and shes sweet. Mine came in around $450. Pics on my website braddy.pinninglines.com. Will post new pics tomorrow night!

I also removed the bottem resonator near the gaurd
What does the resonator do?
Is the car noisier after removing it?

This is the info I got back in regards to a dual battery stetup from 4WD Systems:
cost for kit is $316 plus $22 freight to door. has extra brackets in the kit to relocate the washer or overflow bottle.
180amp electronic isolator, cradle and wiring. 3 year warranty.
If you were to use a deep cycle gel type battery you would need a volage regulator as well (I assume the isolator is for a basic setup).

I have a 1995 dualcab and have an AGM in battery box where the back seat used to be.
I guess this only a help if you want to pull out the seat!
I have battery, fuse box, fridge and radios mounted to false floor.
I use a Pirahana dual battery set-up which was dead easy to install.

I put a dual battery under the bonnet of my 99 desiel hilux, used a redac controller from ebay ($100), 12mm cable from dick smiths, battery tray from ARB ( having seen the ARB one would be a peace of piss to make), and an optima 55Ahr yelow top(much cheaper in the US).
You need to remove the big black air baffle thingy and block the hole in the air intake, this took 2-3hr, then position the battery tray and fit 2hr, install relay and run new wiring from standard battery to relay then to new battery 2-3hr. I also made up a power box to run the power from the second battery to the fridge, stereo, uhf and driving lights.
The red light is the Redec and the black box the power box

On the air inlet i selacticed a large rubber grommet and securied it in place with black elec tap- have also checked for leaks and none found.

Ran the cable over the radiator with other cables.

I'm in the process of putting in a dual battery setup and a brake controller in my 02 Hilux. Taking a few photos as I go and thought, sod it, I will bore you lot with it.
The components will sit in the engine bay and under the tray.

The RedArc SBi12 and the 100amp circuit breaker bolted in and wired up.

The same parts again, photo from different angle.

The Anderson plug at the rear to get power to the camper trailer battery.

Searching for the correct wire on the brake peddle.

The brown Wire is now clipped into it ready to connect to the brake controller.

The second battery on the ute will be under the tray behind the driver, I have a snorkel so no room in the engine bay. I have a 120Ah deep cycle battery going in, just waiting for the bracket to be made.
The brake controller is a Tekonsha Prodigy.

Next stage, drilled out the dash plugs for the LED and the spring loaded dual battery bypass system, lets me use the deep cycle battery to crank with should I flatten the cranking battery.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2020.jpg
I Soldered the LED to a resistor and the wiring. The two clips are heat sinks so as not to damage the LED or the resistor. I Silicone the LED in place from behind, the Plumber in me slipping through.

The LED and button mounted in the dash.

The engine bay with all the parts in and wired, in the shot is the RedArc dual battery system, below that is the 100 amp circuit breaker, the silver box with two smaller red cables is a self resetting 20 amp circuit breaker on the brake controller.

The Prodigy in place and wired, cables can be seen running out the back.

The wires running up and under the dash, the clean wires.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2027.jpg
Cables ready for battery box, right hand cables from the cranking battery, the left hand ones going to the Anderson plug at the rear of the ute.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2032.jpg
My only real concern, I have zipped tied the cables to the brake lines. Are they going to get hot enough to damage the power cables?
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2034.jpg
The battery frame turned up today, drilled the holes for it to mount under the ute tray, cleaned it up and now it is hanging up out side a pretty white colour.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/100_1557.jpg
The bracket cleaned back and rust proofed.

Ok, battery sitting in frame, and bolted down. Yep I know its just a deep cycle and not an AGM, but the battery shop talked me out of a deep river
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2047.jpg
All the cables at the second battery end all ready to go. + - from cranking battery. + - to Anderson plug. + - times two, back to the fuse box in cab, heavier cable for the draw on a bigger inverter I intend on getting soon.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2049.jpg
Wiring hooked to the battery with the cable from the cranking battery going through a 100amp circuit breaker clipped to the underside of the tray.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2051.jpg
All ready to fit into place AFTER a test run
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2052.jpg
In place at last, hmmm the tray needs a paint job
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2057.jpg
Engine bay all connected.

I have a fuse box in the cab for the second battery, everything goes through it except the Anderson plug at the rear. I have a power point in the cab. I use it for charging LED lamps and running a 300 watt inverter or anything else I need to run with the ignition off.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2053.jpg
And a power point in the tray for my Engel.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/bungslea/dual%20battery/utebat2056.jpg
Since the photos were taken I have put a 1000 watt Inverter in the cab running off the second battery.
I had problems with the LED and the RedArd, I ended up with a massive surge? In the vehicle electrics that meant when I accelerated the engine ran like I was running out of fuel, and I got a warning light on the dash meaning take Ute to Toyota NOW!!, the unit went back and RedArc replaced itJ. But since then I have been shy of putting the LED back into the system.

haven't done it yet, just built the box, but plan to put mine under the tray sitting on top of the spare wheel mounting bars, cab side . i have a wooden tray floor so i just cut a "man hole" in the floor and made up a form ply hatch with a drop in box sitting on the spare wheel bars. bit of decking oil ,stainless screws . cool, dry used a normally useless space.
