Hi I recently built my own snorkel due to budget restrictions (read; handbrake!) heres how; i used 75mm unpunched drain coil with an intake hose part off a mitsi V3000 for a hat ( it bends 90 deg to face forward, was perfect size and is flexible if it hits brances etc). the coil goes into the fender through an 80mm hole. i used the rubber flange of a old pod filter to line the hole and sealed it with silaflex silacone. two spouting brackets hold the coil on the pillar with stainless screws. the pipe was a tight fit through the hole and connects strait to the original intake pipe. all joins are sealed with silaflex and i have retained the original filter. i noticed a power increase and cleaner filter. i have driven in driving rain with no problems. total cost was $40. any opinions or improvments would be apprieciated, cheers! :thumb:

sound like it might be ok. I recently bought a MK Patrol turbo diesel and it has a snorkel made fron 65mm pvc down pipe with bends and unless you look hard at it yo can't tell, it has been painted the same colour as the truck and although cheap look alright. I have had some stainless exhaust pipe bent to go on in its place but as they say 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'

ok ill attach one now cheers. In case ya wondering what the silver foil is for, its a heat guard for the waterproof bitumin tar wrap i used to cover the join after i sealed it. The wrap was getting hot and soft from exhaust heat.

Total cost was $40 plus my labour that was for the lenth of pipe, spouting brackets, top hat (from wreckers) and a drill bit i used to make hole. Got silacone free from my boss and had pod filter flange at home. Cheers :D

this is what i need to do, im on a bit of a budget (due to a first year apprentice wage and two cars) and its hard to justify $425 for a snorkel + fitting. it looks pretty neat, i like the snorkel on otis as well, i want to go stainless steel tho.

There's nothing stopping you from building a stainless one down the track when the finances allow it. You said this one has worked well so far. So it does the job it was intended for!
Well done!

I did a stainless one for my GQ and that cost me about $150 all up.
Im happy with it cause it works! as you should be with yours.
Keep up the mods, nothing better than standing back and saying 'i did that'

Steve.

looks good mate, my only concern would be water entry as you dont have the self drain action of a proper head.

if you keep an eye on it there should be no proplem

nicely done but are you getting a proper head?

wouldnt want the water to get in :)

they dont make them for feroza's

robstroop
07-06-2007, 07:30 PM
Thanks for the posts nice to know someone else likes my work!! i havent had a water problem yet, ive driven in heavy rain and wind driven rain and filter was dry on inspection. to the feroza owner just have a go i started out a little unsure but have a go cause it might be easier than ya think. as long as its sealed. if i put my hand over mine while someone revs the engine it nearly sucks my hand in! definitly sealed. ya might need larger pipe if ya have a V6 etc:)

It looks good. I had to make my own too.
I think once you get that pic in your head it can be done.

Great job!

I noticed yours is petol, silicon can have a effect on the 'O' sensor if you have one, this will sometimes result in the engine running richer or leaner (cant remember which),

might pay to check it out!

great job thou

As long as it does the job....
Anyway, it makes your Jackaroo look like a street sweeper machine with a side vacuum hose....

I wan to do twin stainless on my GQ but unsure how yo mount them properly.

be very careful with that tubing as it is easy to put a hole in and I believe it persishes in sunlight over time. Another problem with using a flexible tubing is that it will be very easy to damage it with tree branches etc. having said that it does look nice and neat and as long as you keep an eye on the tube for any leaks you should get heaps of life out of it.

robstroop
01-07-2007, 07:20 PM
cheers, im looking at replacing it later on with stiffer tube of some kind

There is no way on earth I would ever pay $400.00 odd dollars for a bit of plastic moulded to fit a vehicle just because it has a name such as safari or airtec on it. Big companies keep getting big $$$ for a product that should be selling for around $50.00 to $150.00, I say GOOD ON ANYONE THAT MAKES THEIR OWN OR PAYS SOMEONE TO MAKE A GOOD STAINLESS STEEL OR ALLY SNORKLE FOR THEM!! GOOD JOB SON

i used 65mm pipe ,3 #45% angles for the shafts and 1#90% which goes into the air box all which were kindly donated by the plumbers from work (but dont tell them) and some alloy window frame did for the mounting brackets the snorkel head came from a mate who rolled his car so he didnt need it anymore the hardest part was turning the jigsaw on to cut the hole

Great job on ya snorkle. I had one bent up down at the local exhaust place out of 2.5 inch pipe with a 3 inch adaptor on the end of it for the air ram for about $100 and bought an air ram from the tractor supplies shop for about $35 then just threw a coat of black paint over it and on she went. Here is a picture of what it looks like.
Cheers Darren
