I am in the process of buying a landcruiser for touring and family vehicle. I already have hard off road truck so this is for touring. All my research is driving me crazy. I am wanting to explore a 100 series, 98-99 model. But am unsure of what I'm looking for. Is there any advice out there? Most that i am looiing at have around 170-180000 and are around $22-24000

So whats the question? If you want one with lower klms ,pay the man the money.
Or wait till the end of the year when the new models come out and hope the old ones drop in price.

We went through this last year when looking for our 100 series. Dave had 'been there, done that' kind of thing in his 80 series (and it has the scars to prove it), so this one was to be set up as a family tourer.
We set ourselves a list of what it had to have, and then things we'd like it to have either at purchase or in the near future.
For us, it had to have solid front axle, auto and diesel. That was our criteria, and at the time they were really hard to come by. We found two eventually - one was a n/a GXL with virtually no mods done to it at all for around $26k. Then there was the one we bought - '98 model, safari turbo and intercooler, TJM steel winch bar, Kaymar rear bar with wheel carrier, 3" suspension lift, electric sunroof etc. It did have alot of km's on it - 260k - but it had the mods we ideally wanted and the guy selling it also threw in the original set of steel rims, shocks and a brand new winch that he'd never got around to putting on it. It had never done any offroading other than maintained dirt roads and it had been looked after. We paid $25k for it.
Know what you want/need beforehand. Decide whether you want diesel or petrol, solid or IFS front, auto or manual etc. It makes it easier to narrow your search down a bit.

If you haven't already looked at the Redbook its worth a gander.

This will give the specs of the different models.
I have a 2005 GXL Auto 100TD and find it an excellent touring vehicle.

I went through this a while back when trying to find a 100's to set up as a tourer/fam 4by as I have my V8 4Runner as my bash 4by and a little Daewoo as my daily driver. I started out for a auto diesel but in WA they are hard to come by and most have been brought in from the east coast and re rego if you can find them, so this means the price is high for what you get and most had wound marks of some sort or get snapped up. I wanted to be fussy with this purchase as It will take a long time to pay the bank back so km's and condition was my highest priority not bolted on goodies.
I think you need to know what you want and what you are happy to except as I soon changed and settled for a petrol auto model in the end as price was alot less and more available choices in WA. Found a 2002/05 auto with only 52th km as it was a offshore rig worker he stored it more then he used it and I could eat off any part of it, but I also had to pay alot more for it compared to other units I looked at. Now I got to just get it on gas.
good luck with looking

I find that the redbook is of no help out West. You need to add 5 to 10k to the price. It only seems to help the dealers with their trade in price. It may be different in the East?
I agree with the others, work out what you must have in the fourby and then what you would like. Stick to your must haves a that will help narrow down the search... Good luck.

Agree its not much chop for realistic prices but it is good for comparing the specs of the different models and when they changed.

To give you an idea....
I paid $23 000 for my 1998 100 Series GXL AUTO 4.5L petrol Black with ARB Sahara Bar, IPF Spotlights, Dual airbags, Woodgrain interior, Outback Roof Console, only had done 168 000kms and i am the third owner.
Thought i got it for a good price with all the extras, the owner wanted $25 000
