Hey guys, does anybody have a copy of the discover australia maps that they would be willing to send me? Willing to repay the favour with a copy of the great desert tracks that was donated by a kind forum member :)
Not sure if asking for this is apropriate so I won't be offended if this thread disapears.
Cheers

Discover Oz doesnt have maps, they are built into the program.
Ozi Explorer uses maps.

Hmm i'm a little rusty on all of this! Did a heap of research 6 months ago but since the Kakadu trip got put on hold the gps went onto the back burner!
Is discover australia purely the maps/program for magellan gps'? It is available on cdrom, surely they have a release that can be used with programs such as oziexplorer? The version of great desert tracks that I have is also available for the magellan on sdcard and cdrom so I just assumed the discover aust would be as well. Having a mad hunt now trying to get my mind back around it! Buggered if i'm going to cough up $380 for it! Thats more than the gps hehe

they're two different programs, and they cant be used in conjunction.
Ozi uses actual images of maps, but discover aus uses built in vector maps.

I know they are two different programs, I was just under the impression that the discover australia cdrom would be a program with accompanying maps. Obviously it was the wrong impression!
The GDT maps I have look great and work with oziexplorer. At least in theory they do, havnt been far enough outback to actually test them since they don't cover the city.
What maps are people use with oziexplorer?

I just use topographic maps of Tasmania, I had to buy them off the Land Information dept. They arent really up to date but they do the job. I flip between that and DiscoverAus when i'm in the bush to get the best of both worlds.

Diehard thanks for your help mate, its appreciated.
Your obviously using a lappy for your mapping? When you say you flip between the two, are you using a magellan gps as the receiver for your laptop with the mapsend? software? I think I read earlier tonight that if you have a magellan gps with the discover australia software that there is a program to send the data across to your laptop. Buggered if I can find the site. Sorry for being so vague, I can hardly understand what im on about :D
I plan on using a carputer with a simple gps mouse so I wont have any use for discover australia if it doesnt come with its own set of standalone maps.

I use a magellan meridian. It cant talk to both programs at once, so I have to stop it transmitting in one then log into the other. I have seen 2 mouse gps recievers used on both programs at the same time.
There are a few programs that can convert Ozi explorer data to DiscoverAus and vice versa. Disco to Ozi is pretty straight forward, uses the converter off the Ozi site. Ozi to Disco is a bit trickier, I use GPSBabel to convert them, but its not often i need to.
The reason i use both, is it is easer to put waypoints in UTM format into Oziexplorer, upload them to the GPS and then download them into DiscoverAus. I use it mainly for navigation events, and most of the waypoints they give you are in UTM. I personally find discoveraus easier to navigate with.
Also, when i say discoveraus, i also mean mapsend lite, which is the updated program that comes with the explorist range. I just havent upgraded yet.
The maps you mentioned would be OK....its more about the area than the type of maps (ie, my tassie maps are useless to ya :D ) the .ozf2 format are smaller than the ECW files but if you have got a bit of space on your lappy, then that shouldnt be an issue. My tasmania maps take up 5gig in TIFF format, and only 2gig in ozf2 format.
