This is my 'Monty'. Based in Cambridge, UK. It's standard at the moment. But, it will have a slow transformation.

Because it's std at the moment it's spec's are very simple. 08/1996 build date - 2.8td.

I have today purchased Dobinson's Springs, TB's and Shocks for it from Mark Stoner at Extreme Limits Offroad 4x4 site in Qld. His service via email has been great... so i hope the dobinson's stuff is the equal of it. I'm sure it will be though as I had Dobinson's stuff on the GQ I owned without problems... will keep you all informed.

Well folks... for anyone whose interested the last couple of days for me have been expensive [if you don't spend when on holiday where's the incentive to go back to work!]. So yesterday I bought a new set of wheels for my Monty. Many thanks to all who answered my question relating to the center diameter of wheels because your responses helped guide me as to what wheels I should buy. They wheels are from a Mitsubishi L200 and are 16x7".

So as I got the wheels yesterday, today it was the turn of buying the tyres. I'm a massive fan of the Cooper ST. I had these on my LandCruiser [I understand from the dealership that I bought them from I had the very first set in the UK!] and went everywhere everyone on the MT tyres went but had better grip on tarmac. But... I did long for a tyre that provided a bit more bite in deep mud but without loosing too much on-road behaviour. So... after a bit of research i've settled on the Wildcat Mud Terrain SXT tyre. They're still made by Cooper and I think they'll be a good compromise because they would appear to have the side shoulder of the Cooper ST and the center blocks are almost identical to the Cooper STT. So it would appear to me to be Cooper's [wildcat] halfway house tyre between the two. Time will tell I guess... The size I got was 235/85/16 which is approx. 32"x 9.50" which should fit a treat given my Monty is the version without arches.

I haven't put the wheel's on yet 'cause the tyres i ordered still haven't arrived! 2 weeks on and i'm not impressed with the company as they said '3-5 working days' - 11 working day's and nothing. And... despite me paying for 5 tyres delivered they had the cheek whilst i was on holiday to phone my friend to request a further £32 delivery! So i'm phoning them tomorrow to express my views, cancel the order and buy elsewhere. But i will post photos when the wheel's are on!

Well... the new wheels are on. I do think they are an improvement over the original wheels. Originally I was going to wait until i had the new tyres before putting them on but my misses said to put them on now... I just love a woman who likes modifications! ;-) Just need the new tyres now. I phoned the company i placed the original order for the new tyres... and based on that conversation cancelled the order. So back to shopping...

Well... given my prior post I've now bought some new tyres. They will be fitted on Saturday. They're the Bridgestone D673 MT tyre. I don't know anyone whose used these first hand... so i'll let you know. Regretably Cooper in the UK didn't appear to have a ST tyre in my desire 235/85/16 tyre.

Anyway... i bought them based on this website's review...

For those who are interested this is the only picture I could find until they're fitted.

I'm going to use 235/85/16 which is the same size height wise as the 265/75/16 but just more narrow. I prefer the more narrow one because my Monty is without arches and i'd rather keep it looking more std than modified with the plastic/rubber flares

I've just had the tyres fitted and i reckon the 235/85/16 which I was hoping to be a good fit, fit perfectly. I'd post more photos from those below but it's just started to tip down here :-( which mean's I can go and test them out in the mud instead :-)

Compared to the original size i had on which were 235/70/15 these tyres are approx. 2" taller and they certainly do make a difference when you go to pop in the vehicle.

What i'm particularly pleased with also is that my speedo is now almost 100% spot on. According to my gps with the original wheels, when the speedo indicated 60mph, the actual was 54mph, when at 50mph on the speedo the actual was 45mph. Now with the new wheels and tyres, speedo and actual read 50mph/50mph and 60mph/61mph. So i'm really pleased with this.

Hi Mark,
I literally just got the suspension in the UK this week. Thanks for your help. It took ages to get them shipped. All arrived ok. Am looking to put on the shocks today if the rain eases.

Looks good mate. I own pretty much the same sort of car uith standard wheels and tyres. i was wondering if the extra tyre and wheel combination have a negative effect on the gearing and is it very noticabe

Hi mate,

no noticeable difference at all regarding the gearing. The speedo is spot on. No scrubbing with the tyres either because their not overally wide either.

That loosk sweet man........................very impressive. How big is the lift?

harvey
25-12-2007, 10:48 PM
The overall lift is approx. 3". 1.5" from the suspension lift and the other from the tyres [235/70/15 vs. 235/85/16]. For the Paj/Shoggy I think this is ideal for offroad pay and play and touring... at least that's my opinion.
