i leant my brother my swag last year after alot of haggling. told him the rules. clean it dont wreck it etc. anyway after getting it back i checked it over to find not one but two cigarette holes a big hot coal burn and a small tear at the feet. got the that was alredy there excuse seeming i dont smoke and i camp no where near the fire i told him he is full of sh*t. any way few months ago 2 of my mates wanted to borrow it one friday one the saturday. go ahead you know the rules. got it back with half the stitching ripped out at the foot end and the poles missing. i was bloody furious. it was like that when i got it. they both reckon. why cant people just admit things and say sorry. has anyone else had these troubles with lending camp gear out? or do people just not lend out things out??

I do, but I'm mega picky about to whom I lend it and why they wanna lend it. And if they get the shits when I say no, well it's like they have no respect anyway...

Sounds like you won't be lending gear anymore lol

Just don't lend it out here, i paid good money for it and i am sure as hell not going to let someone else have their way with it. You lend it to ya brother you would think you would get it back like it left but ohh well. Friends well they want to go camping i say buy ya own if ya want to do it. I look after the gear i have and only have myself to blame if i trash it.

I do loan, sort of, to only a couple of good friends and I have reciprocol ask of some of their gear. The system works well and has saved us some $ and an excess of occasionally used gear but its not a pool for anyone's use. But we have respect for someone else's stuff as a given.

However, if someone just rings up and asks, my answer is no, if I want to remain on talking terms with them.

I agree with Crykies, just don't lend stuff out unless you know they'd treat it like their own and return the favour. When you're all camping together then it's share and share alike but once you've been burnt, no second chances. Personally I never have a problem with my mates, and my brother don't like 4WDing and camping so I'm safe there.

I lend out very little, and tend to inspect it when it comes back.

Makes you wonder sometimes if they don't respect your gear, or don't repect you enought to return it in good nick or fix what went wrong whilst they had it.

Personally I'm of the approach if a mates good enought let me borrow it, I'll return in cleaner & in better conditon that I received it (usually full of fuel as well).

Exceptions include: Chainsaw, Recovery Gear and the Rifle - always some smartarse who thinks the scope is out and will readjust it for you - although they still can't hit anything once they've adjusted it...........

I'm excactly the same. except for the rifles which i dont have. I used to lend my SLR's, but you had to be pretty stupid to bugger one of them up.

Dont lend my fridge or generator or my camp trailer, Paid way too much for them and want to keep it in good condition. But will lend an esky and a tent and other camping gear though.
These things letting you down on a trip can mean going home early.

I find it very difficult to lend my camping/fishing/hunting gear as I am as fussy as hell. Will lend some items but simple rule if it come back in any other state than how I gave it to then they replace it or fix it. Plus generally I only lend it to mates that are more fussy than I am.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER lend anything you aren't prepared to lose. An old workmate told me this and i have lived by this ever since.

It started when I lent a bloke $5 and never got it back. I went to confront the tight arse and my workmate pulled me aside and said "$5 is a small price to know a man". Enuff said

i lent a "mate" a part of my 2nd car (v8 commy) a while ago....he wanted it to go to a show the next day so i lent it to him, siad he would bring it back next day, weks later i asked for it back and he brought it back, i drove that car the next day to work and when i finished work it wouldnt start, cost me over $140 for a fix, was the part i lent my mate was stuffed, funny, it had the same thing qwrong with it that he had, turns out he gave me back his shitty part and kept my good one......
I wont lend anything to anyone , anymore for awhile till i can trust people again....

not much of a mate then is he
when push comes to shove the only person you can truly trust is yourself,

My old man says "never lend ANYONE camping gear, chainsaws, or women. Why? Because they all come back f*cked!"

Need I say more? My old man's a smart bloke - my swag's in perfect condition!

i might lend a pot or fry pan out ,but i work hard to make the activities i enjoy safe and comfortable (saw geni swag tent cookers lights etc) so if some one really needs it they can buy it if they dont use it again join the rest of us who have bought and tried and put it to the back of the shed untill it is justifiable to sell at a garage sale;)

i think if someone borrows something of you and breaks it in anyway shape or form, then they are obliged to fix it before returning it. accidents happen forsure, i borrowed a shower setup off a mate to take to fraser once. whilst packing the gear up to come home i went to undo the shower head part and accidently snapped it off. when i got home i went to the shops and got a replacement part for the bit i broke, cost me $50 but thats a small price to pay considering my mate was prepared to lend me his gear in the first place.

i'm also of the belief that if you borrow a car off a friend, you return it with the fuel tank full even if it wasn't so when you got it (unless it has a long range tank, just make sure more fuel in it on return then when borrowed). i think it shows how much you appreciate them lending it to you in the first place.

I can see the good will and common sense in filling the car for whoever lent it to you ... but at today's prices it would probably be cheaper to rent a car than to fill someones tank up for them. :)

And I agree 100% with the comments about not lending anything you don't want back... If I have something and don't really care that much if it comes back or not then I will lend it out..... otherwise keep your dirty hands off! lol
