View Full Version : Wheel bearings covered by warranty?

We have a 1.5 year old Swift that we've had for 0.5 years. Developed a noise a few weeks ago that turned out to be a wheel bearing. For a second the service monkey tried to tell my wife that it wouldn't be covered as it was fixed last year (before we owned it), but I think he was a bit confused (he thought it was a few weeks ago but didn't look at the year part of the date, plus it was the other side). To which the wife said, "Why do I only get one wheel bearing covered by warranty when there's four wheels?" He quickly changed his tune and told her there's no need to get angry, meanwhile this was only one in a series of stupid questions/statements he had made.
So just wanted to ask the experts,
1. Bearings should be covered under warranty, shouldn't they? And;
2. The warranty should cover as many bearings as the car chews out during the warranty period, shouldn't it? (I'm exaggerating obviously as I don't think it has an unusual appetite for bearings.)
3. The wife noticed on the cars "medical history" that it had some work done before it was sold to us, are we entitled to a copy of it's service history pre-ownership or at least a look at their records?

wouldn't think so unless it was a manufacturing fault. general wear and tear is not covered by warranties. They could wear out earlier due to other components in the vehicle like wheel alignment etc being out.

try and keep this short,i used to work in dealerships different manufacturer.
1.if they are sealed or non serviceable bearings then yes they should be covered under the manufacturers warranty.however other factors can affect this,things like aftermarket wheels that are the wromg offset and incorrectly loading the bearings,and the general overall use of the cars such as if you had been driving in harsh conditions will also affect warranty
2.not necessarily some manufacturers have a shorter period on genuine replacement parts ie:12 months/20000km from date of fitment due to the fact that they have no control over the dealership that fits them/mechanics who fits them could damage them whic is not the manufacturers fault.
3.unfortunately you are not really 'entitled to' the vehicles history from the dealer because someone else owned the vehicle and all previous records would contain their details,how ever if some will give you a warranty history of the vehicle(most won't).i once spent an hour and a half reprinting a vehicles service history for a customer who was a long time customer with his other vehicle.i just made sure the previous owners details could not be found anywhere on the reprints.
got me a carton for my trouble but he was happy.

as afr as my local dealer has told me it should be covered by warranty as long as it is a part failure as referred to as above
