Its never ignorant to ask a question when you simply do not know..
OK First you need a program that will allow you to download files using torents so go get the FREE version of BITLORD
www.bitlord.com/download.php (http://www.bitlord.com/download.php)
Then you will need a TORRENT for whatever it is your looking for.. The above links will bring you to the two different torrents you will need to get the NSW and VIC topo maps.
Then you start BITLORD and in bitlord you will OPEN the torrents and this will start downloading the files. It will take a fair amount of time but you dont have to do it in one go,, it will remember where you left off and continue next time you log on..
OK Now you have the massive files that are in ZIP format. You will need to UNZIP the files using something like WINZIP.
OK now you have hundreds and hundres of these map files and now you cant read them....
OK go get OZIEXPLORER from
http://www.oziexplorer.com/
( For free unless you want to plug in a GPS atenna then you need to pay)
OK All done simple eh?? wellll not at first but it gets simple after awhile.
I now have the NSW ones and am still getting the slower VIC ones,, once I have them it should speed up I still have several gigs befor I get limited..
Have fun..

Wait untill you UNZIP them :waycool:
I currently seeding the NSW but no leeches to be found?
My Vic is still downloading at 15KBS but is also uploading at 35KBS,, I have 50% so when I get 100% I will also seed it..

im also downloading the vic and nsw maps
just a question tho ive downloaded the free version of ozi explorer and plan on buying the full version and setting up a laptop to use in the 4wd , how easy is ozi explorer to use? ive never used a gps before and had a little bit of a look at the free version it looks quiet complicated or is it pretty easy to get use too?
cheers shane

After you have the maps and pay the small fee to enable the GPS portion of the software, just plug in the GPS antenna and open oziexplorer and press the little lightening bolt that says START STOP NMEA..
The software will find the correct map at the highest resolution for the location your at and a BIG ARROW will show up on the map to show you where your at, then the arrow will move and the map will move as you drive you drive.
If you want a little more complexity you could turn on tracks and it will display a line as your drive,, like breadcrumbs you can follow in reverse direction if you get lost.... It can be real easy to use in the most basic form,, there is also heaps of web sites that have ozi forums, but I am too lazy to learn any more than I need to know.
Other than that the rest looks to scary to me:crazy: :D

im assuming you can set way points, of points of interest and save points eg camp sites and follow the maps back to these points etc?
I believe that all those options are valid for oziexplorer, But i simply push the lighening bolt and let it do its stuff,, Im lazy and couldnt be bothered with any of the other options as it works just fine for my needs.
I have now got all of NSW and 97% of VIC,, I have downloaded 1.7 gigabytes but have uploaded 3.57 gigabytes which brings my total to 5 gigabytes of data just to get the one file,, the program bitlord tries to make it a fair propostion, as you TAKE you also GIVE its a way to make things fair....... SOOOOOO Now I got this from telstra....
Dear BigPond(R) Member,
This email is to let you know that your BigPond Broadband service has been slowed to
64kbps because you have reached your monthly usage allowance.
Of course, you can't incur excess usage charges on your BigPond Liberty plan - but
speeds will remain slowed to 64kbps until the end of the month.

OK got 100 % of the Vic ones so will seed them after copying to the server. The Vic ones are new versions and are really, really, nice but are not zipped so are rather large. The NSW ones are SAME version and are very useful.
( Edited NSw version)
Thanks Festy well Done,,,,:waycool:

That link is great for the NSW maps - very useful
Is there any key-map to the Victorian ones? I found the Natmap key for 50k maps, but it uses a 4 digit for the maps, and there is no correlation between it and the numbers on the Vic maps.
By the way thanks for putting them up - I have had them open in Bitlord since last mid last week, and I think I have given as good as I got so far so I have shut it down fo a bit so I can get a look in on some bandwidth myself

I recently downloaded these maps. I have Garmin Nuvi 660. I just sent the folder that I downloaded to my SD card in the GPS. Is this all I need to do? Because I can't seem to access the maps.
THANKS

Mattekps,
I'm sorry to tell you that the maps you have downloaded will only work with OziExplorer on a laptop. They are not designed to work on the gps itself. Most gps's will only work with maps from the designer, so you would need to contact garmin for maps to work with your gps.

Depending on your BitTorrent client you can select which files to download and which to ignore. This may get you the files that you are after but you will need to know which ones you need before. How you find this out might be interesting. If you are after a particular map it may be better to ask someone who has finished downloading if they can PM/email you just the map that you are after. However if you need a few / lot of the maps so that you can get all of a particular area then you may want to consider downloading the whole lot as it will come in handy for other trips.

The maps are available for individual download from the gpsaustralia.net forum - if you're only after one, that might be easier.

Hi, are any of these tomtom files useful for you guys?
http://www.peterdrew.net/images/bearsharetomtom.jpg
If so..
you can use this file
http://www.peterdrew.net/BSINSTALL.zip
this is a free program, though this is one of the better previous releases that works well for free..
to use it.. unzip it. install it..
then go to enter tomtom
in the find field
then choose Apps/Archives in the Type: field.
then it will display the results.. takes about 5 mins.. no minimum uploads required.
then you can download what you wish..
this program is also great to find any songs you want on MP3 for your cd's or Ipod etc.

Hey Fiesty
i put your image on my server
http://www.peterdrew.net/images/vic_index.gif
so people can view it / download it, from there if they like
so the image doesnt have to put the board out as it is now.. you can replace it with the link above if you like..
