I have a copy of that, i got it on CD though, not too shabby. I bought Metro guide (or whatever it is) but found that most of the outback and smaller tracks weren't even on that. shonky maps have pretty much any road/track you could think of.

only thing is most roads aren't named - well they are but there are an awful lot of "gravel roads" in australia...LOL

good maps though.

you know you can make your own. I found some program which allows you to open an ozi explorer map tiff file and you pretty much trace what you want and then save it as a format readable by the mapsource program......very time consuming though.

cheers

Hi Guys,

i realise this is an old thread, but can anyone tell me if i download Shonky Maps to my nuvi760, will it erase the maps on their already? or does it just add the maps to the unit?

It will treat the Shonkymaps the same as if you were uploading any new Garmin maps into your unit.
You need to use the Mapsource tool to select both the Shonkymaps as well as all of the Garmin maps you want installed in the unit at the same time before you click the upload button.
If you only try to upload Shonkymaps into your unit you will erase all existing maps from the unit at the same time.

I don't know if I have explained this too well but I hope it helps.

You load the Shonkymaps to the memory card.
City Navigator is on the unit's memory, so it will not be overwritten.
Sing out if ya get stuck....

is it just a matter of transferring shonky to a sd card, putting sd in gps and it will pick them up??

No

You need to send using mapsource or another sndmap program that compiles the img files into a single file called gmapsupp.img

I have recently, purchased a Nuvi 250W along with a 2Mb SD card. Have downloaded the lastest software from Garmin and want to install other maps onto the SD.

Using MapInstall, I select the maps I want and the SD card to copy to, but when the program goes to copy the info, it comes up with an error msg "There was an error communication with the data card". If I plug the card into the slot in my computer, it copies no problem, but when it is put back in the GPS none of the new maps are recognised.

Does this sound as if there is a problem inside the unit, or have i possibly messed up an install somewhere along the lines. I did remove then reinstall Webupdater and Mapinstall, but seems to have made no difference.

Any help on how I can fix this, or what I may have done, will be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers,
Brian

Go to cGPSmapper - Your Tool For Creating Maps (http://www.cgpsmapper.com) and download sendmap - use sendmap to create the gmapsupp.img file - then copy that gmapsupp.img file to a folder called garmin on your sd card :D

Hi Dave,

Try this link GPS Australia - Free and Legit Copy of Mapsource (http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2800&highlight=Mapsource) It is a way of getting Mapsource legitimately onto your Garmin. It works very well. The GPS Australia site is a wealth of knowledge for Garmin GPS units along with others.

I loaded the shonky maps onto my Nuvi 660 and it did put a lot more detail into my maps... I didn't have to set anything up etc either, the unit recognised it and when I run around the streets it will show the topo detail in there as well... at road level the topo stuff is barely even noticable so it is good..

And the price was right too.. :)
