G'day mate i''ve had the opposite problem with my 4runner on gas. I have found the things to check for are is your fuel pump working correctly, also check that the light comes on ur gas computer/switch unit as mine wasn't, somewhere along the line mine wasn't and i had to run power to it as i stopped on the middle of rainbow beach, the other one is check that ur injectors are coming on, which is a matter of finding the wire and checking it with a multimeter. This is where i have looked and it has been one of those three problems.

i had the same problem as you mate, i went for a run to the drags drove there down the freeway on petrol no worries - on the way home driving down the freeway decided to switch to gas, at that point it felt like a glider no throttle response no nothing so i swithced back to petrol and it ran fine

i got home stopped the car, switched to gas tried starting it, it would fire but wouldn't kick over and hold just kept stalling and i knew i had about 1/2 tank

took it back to the gas place they told me the gas i was getting wasn't good i.e. bad quality cough** bp cough** now they recommend using kleenheat gas only and now due to the crap gas all the seals in the converter shat emselves and i was up for a new converter luckily i was still under warranty

i now only use kleenheat gas and i have never had a problem since

It runs well on gas, and i sprayed a whole can of carby cleaner in it and it didnt fix it, i use fuel on a weekly basis to keep it lubed, and i have notice when switching it back to gas, just befor the bowl empties it smooths out!?

Did this happen suddenly? (ie how long before this instance did you use petrol without issues)
Is fuel filter ok?

check the fuel locks are working,it may be trying to run on both fuels at the same time, have struck this before,if it runs ok on gas petrol lock solenoid should be ok.if it runs hairy on petrol check the gas lock solenoids are ok,easy way to check if its trying to run on gas and petrol when youre on petrol is run it on gas first and switch the manual valve off at the tank and let it run out, then switch over to petrol and if it runs ok i would be looking at the gas lock solenoids.
hope this makes sense:)

Sounds like you have picked up a load of dirty fuel. :(

Try draining a bit of fuel out of the tank, and see if there is any water or other rubbish in the tank, and maybe dump a litre or so of metho into the fuel tank.

Failing that, there might be a bit of s@#t blocking one of the passages in the carby.

If its a carby motor there is a chance the carby has spat a seal or something along those lines. This happened to my friends old FJ40 and he put a carby kit through it and it worked fine again afterwards.
If it smoothes out just before the fuel bowl empties then the needle and seat could be stuffed or maybe one of the jets are blocked.

Dont know about the tank draining though.
