anyone using a PDA & GPS combo unit? I am in the market for a PDA and come across the dual units. I know that it won't be any good for outback travel or anywhere really outside major cities - i'd buy a "proper" GPS for that, i just thought that it might be handy when in a new town/city.

can anybody recommend a good unit? i am looking to synchronise Microsoft outlook (email + calendar) as well as navigate through new cities/suburbs.

Thanks guys.

I run a Dell Axim X50V with a Globalsat BT338 GPS reciever. Loaded software for mapping is GPSGate, Tomtom6 and Ozi Explorer. Works OK.

Axim V51v (mounted in the car with PDA holder) with bluetooth to a Globalsat BT-338. I saw also PDA holders with built-in GPS, but I prefer the Globalsat. Can use it in the other car, for my car pc, while walking etc. I use the PDA also to watch movies, play games, make notes and internet access via WiFi hot-spots or my mobile.

PDA & GPS did at least 10.000 km of trips on the dashboard, in the sun, with lots of dust and are still working.

Check out the oziexplorer site (www.oziexplorer.com). As long as the PDA is suitable for running oziCE, you can load it up (with suitable maps) and use it offroad/outback as much as you like.

Does anyone know anything about this HP ipaq http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/au/en/ho/WF06a/1090709-1113753-1113753-1113753-1117925-12816826.html ?

I had a play with one in DSE the other day and it seemed like it would do everything I want it to do. The mapping (street directory thing) seemed very good.

Will Ozi CE run on Windows mobile 5, as supplied with the ipaq?

Yes, and it also works with the integrated SiRFstarIII GSC3F GPS receiver.

Yes and very happy with it. I run Oziexplorer, Tomtom and GPSDash. I just picked up a Qstarz bluetooth GS receiver and it shits on the only Globalsat one. It gets signal in my office building (Globalsat never did) and it puts me exactly on the Tomtom map, not 20 meters behind. As for PDA's. I've got two. I've got an Ipaq HX4700 and an O2 Atom Exec. The Ipaq is heaps better for navigation work. The screen is much bigger and easier to read.

I agree with all of these replies. I have 2 Imate pda's (with phone) and have previously had an ipaq, running a navman bluetooth gps.

IMO this is the best combination. If you're in town, you run Navman, Destinator, TomTom, whatever you choose. You have inbuilt street directory, turn by turn navigation, whatever you need. Just load the maps you want.

If you are travelling bush, use OziExplorer (seems to be best and most popular), or whatever you decide. You have a big screen which makes it easier to use.

The pda will also synchronize your files. I work shift work so I have my roster and other appointments on mine.

As I said, IMO this is the best and most versatile combination.

I was surprised at how well it worked. If you update or change something on your pda during the day, ie new contact, it will update your computer when you next synchronise and visa versa.

Works very well.

I have a Mio 169 PDA. works well in town with its pre loaded map set. although its around $160 to update to the new 2007 maps so some of the new Sydney rds are not on it.
it runs windows CE and works very well with Ozi Explorer, i use a different 2gig SD card for the topo maps and Ozi, then change back over when i need the voice guided in town maps.

speaking of the ipaq model...jb hifi has an ipaq travel companion in it's catalogue for $577 (then you get a $50 cash back offer) not sure what model it is as it doesn't state it, but by the look of pic it is the rx5965 but the hp website has it around $800 by memory...i'm gonna go to harvey and jb hifi tomoz and have a looksee at some of them. The jb hifi add states 3.5" touch screen, windows mobile 5 512 flash rom and 64mb ram, sd & mini usb, voice recorder, and comes with tomtom navigator 6...

I use a Garmin M5, Oziexplorer CE and Hema maps from the Australia DVD.
It also runs the normal sensis software. 2 Gig SD memory card. All Microsoft office tools, Media player etc.

I use a non powered cradle that came with the b/t gps, and just run a lead from the pda to the plug. Not quite as neat, but cheaper.

Theres a new Nokia phone coming out soon called the Nokia Navigator. Saw a demo model recently and this thing is as good if not better than most in car navigators and some GPS Ive seen.

I too have a HP iPaq HX4700 - the 4.0" screen with VGA resolution is so much better than my other iPaq with the 3.5" screen - I recommend you get the bigger screen as it is much much easier to read, especially when driving, and also when you are needing to point and click on the screen.

The rx5900 will also do the trick just fine, although it doesn't have the big 4.0 inch screen.

I run an eFrontier, Freecruiser PDA holder. It runs power to the PDA and also has a built in amplifyed speaker to help with those voice directions.

I run the same powered mount as Emo from eFrontier. Perfect solution, have done 1000s of k's without any problems.
