View Full Version : Landcruiser models
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but can some-one please explain the difference in Cruiser models (80, 100 series etc). I have done a search on the net and cannot find anything. I do not need to know the in-depth stuff, just the basics (size, engines, any problems).
Thanks

80 series- 1990-1997
enigine's ; 4.0li carby petrol (early models)
:4.0li injected petrol (early models)
:4.5li petrol
:4.2 diesel, and also turbo diesel in either 16 or 24 valve!
100 series- 1998-now
engines 4.5li petrol
V8 petrol, 4.5 i think
4.2 diesel and turbo diesel
they are similar ein the models liek RV as base model and GX then GXL then SAHARA- the 100 series introduced a IFS front end in some models- eg most GXL OR SAHARA's
theres a lot more but have a look on a few sites like outerlimits they have a area for toyota

Apart from the shape the cars both the same. The running gear in exactly the same except that in the 100 series they introduced the v8 range. The only promblem I know about are that with the full time 4wd they spit bearings about every 20,000km's. Go part time 4wd, it will last longer with less electrics to mess with(you dont have a computer to put into 4wd). If you decide to give the car mods it is alot easier.

The 100 series introduced the independent front end suspension on all 4.7iV8 and factory Turbo Diesel powered vehicles.
The 4.2 naturally aspirated diesel still retains the solid beam axle suspension on the front.

the gearbox in the 100s turbo diesel and v8 is a heavier box compared to the standard non-turbo(1hz)

What bearings get spat every 20,000km's?? I haven't had anything go like that and have put 100,000 on mine... I do regularly monitor and repair the running gear etc... If you are talking wheel bearings I have changed mine once when I did the swivel hub and brake rotors etc but not since and they are pretty much spot on now.. Big end bearings (1HDT) have been told it is good practice to replace them every 100k.

the 4.5ltr petrol 1FZ-FE 6cylinder in the 80's has a total different injection system and head on it compared to the 100's as well. And I'd like to know what bearings people are referring to as well just for my interest.

Full time front end bearings
Hardcore 80 you have been misinformed.
I've got almost 165,000 klm on my 100 series full time 4wd front beam axle GXL and the (original) bearings are still perfect, but I hasten to add, that they have been properly maintained as per Toyotas recommended maintenance schedule.

the 100 series IFS has a weakness and is prone to cracking/breaking esp. on corrugated roads and tuff stuff. My neighbour has one and doesnt even wheel it and has problems with the front end.

The problem with the front wheel bearings is they have to be regreased every 20,000 k's or they wear prematurly...
its something i get the mechanics to do.....
and its in my gregories manual to be done in the servicing schedule.
i dont think there is any probs with em if they get the greasing...

I have 80 series with full time 4wd and over 360,000km on the clock and NO bearing probs.

My FSM says the front should be serviced every 96,000km or 60,000 miles. I could see doing it every 20,000 km if you were doing a lot of water crossings or what not. Most Landcruisers here go well past 240,000 km before anyone opens one up for a repack.

:truck: Hey Ianm, If you look at the 4wd Action mag 117 or 118, it gives you all the models & a picture of them. Cheers feralo:thumb:

This is incorrect.
I and other who have commented here have 100's with full time four wheel drive without problems.
I have 170,000 K's on mine, and despite some hard four wheel drive work I have no problems and not a new bearing in the entire car.
