Hey guys, im currently looking at purchasing or making a canvas awning for the side of my 80 series, i have got rhino roof racks (3 racks Style) , i have looked at all the manufacturers ones, they range from $500-$800 depending on the maker, but i was thinking, being pretty handy i could make my own, i was wondering if anyone has any ideas they could help me out or share with me to make life easier for me, or is there a cheap good one out there, im open to anything, photos are welcome :) hehe, tarps just dont work, the wind plays havoc with them! thanks guys, any help would be much appreciated,,

I made my own.
I screwed a bit of aluminium angle to the side of the roof rack, screwed in some eyelets to match up with the d rings on a suitably sized tarp, hooked on the tarp and rolled it up with the poles inside, secured in place with 3 ockey straps. The tarp, ropes, poles and pegs were less than $30 at the local camping shop, and the angle was a few dollars from mitre 10. It's quick to set up/pull down, keeps the sun/rain off, and doesn't blow around.
It's pretty much the same as the one they showed you how to make in issue 90-something of 4wd monthly.

thanks for that, i was pretty sure it could have been easy to make up one, just a bit worried about the weakness of a tarp, but i think you can get canvas to do the same thing, i will be looking into this, cheers

Super Cheap make a cheap one but nor sire ot the quality. I just made one from a silver green tarp. These bought ones dont come out far enough for me as they wouldnt keep any rain out if it was a bit windy.

I used a channel attachment that shade cloth is hung with. Got it from Bunnings. It is basically a u chanel with a lip that you put the tarp into and then insert the v shape insert that locks in place to hold it in place. I attached the channel to my roof rack. Then Ijust use two poles joined by an extendable cross pole to keep tension in the tarp. A couple of guys and pegs and it works great. All up cost me about $50

I made my own awning. Uses 3 Rola racks, a spreader bar fixed to the racks either by straps or adapted shovel holders, 2 twist lock poles and another spreader bar (optional) between them with two guy ropes.
Perfect. Can either roll it up and tie it to the side or completely dismantle and store inside the car. Sets very taught and handles strong wind no worries.
I prefer the heavier silver tarps as it as a bit reflective. The heavy duty canvas, apart from being heavier, gets quite a bit hotter underneath.
Also have it so it can come out from the back. Fixes to the rear rack via straps in the tarp holes and two eye bolts, again the twist lock poles, either an apex or flat.
Takes about 3 mins to set either up. So i have the option of a side or rear mount awning for total cost lesss than $100.

I know, what you need to do is buy my industrial sewin machine and then you can make heaps of tarps for everyone........:D

One piece of sailtrack for about $18 at Bunnings rivetted to a piece of about 20x20 aluminium RHS about the same cost then bolted to roofrack. Huge sheet of canvas of ebay, brand new $30, someone to sew rope along side of canvas (cut to length of roof rack) and put a couple of eyelets in, pretty cheap from what I recall.
Two tent poles, ropes and pegs and bobs your uncle.
I found that mine was cut a little short which would probably negate the need for a pole between the two verticle poles, but provides shade and shelter. Would make it longer and wider next time.

i made one for my gq i got one of those old style canvas awnings from the windows on my old mans house. thankfully it was a perfect length they come spring loaded as well all i did was make up two brakets to mount to roofrack got two camping poles and some rope. i cut the fancy wavey end of but only to the sewn seam got some aluminium strips riveted them to the canvas drilled two 5mm holes through aluminium to created a solid surface for poles to mount , mounted the awning and hey presto u got a self retracting canvas cover cost me about $30 and about an hours work.

I was looking at doing the same thing. However, as my car has a aircompressor and hot water shower I was always moving the car around.

I decided to go down another path.

The benefit of this it that it has many other functions as well and it only takes 30 seconds to put up. I have found that if you run dual guide ropes of them it does not move. We used one in January when we went surf fishing for a week and it easily withstood 20-30 knot winds.

Just another view point.

Jo on the Pathfinder forum got one for a good price. You have to roll it up by hand and use 4 poles to hold it up, but it gives good shade and was all of around $300.

I've got a homemade awning on the lux.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h228/Mick_H/Fraser092.jpg

I based it on the writeup from the lcool website

http://www.lcool.org/technical/sunshade/sun_shade.html

This is a bloody good awning, I used a silver tarp and have not had any problems, even after spending many days on the beach in stiff nor easters. Canvas would be a better option but you may have to either go for a bigger diameter pvc pipe(150mm) or end up with a smaller awning. The size of my awning when rolled out is 10' x 12'.

Go for the the home made version, there's nothing better than saying you made it yourself.

I like that awning riley is it home made or store bought.

I recently bought mine from TJM not sure of the make but It's not as good as that as i have to rope up my poles and takes a bit of time. Serves me right for not shopping around.

I haven't had any dramas with it but only used it a couple of times. As long as the tarp and poles are tied down properly it should fine

Just a thought, why not use the same material dome tents are made of. You could keep the shelter in a little bag under your seat, some heavy duty fibreglass poles and a couple of guy ropes and your set.

Hi All,

have a look at the awnings on the OL web site. I have the bedouin awning
# RT75 and love it! They have optional panels too comes complete with the poles and ropes and all folds into its own bag.

Cheers

i just finished making mine aswell,

used 3mm angle on the roof racks, a tarp, some tent poles and guy ropes. Im so happy with how it turned out. Only cost me about $60 and an hour or so of my time. Im pretty proud of my self for having a go and not just taking the easy way out and buying one:thumb:

I bought a thick piece of canvas with hem and rings, 3 x 2 metre for $ 100
Two poles and some guy ropes at the camping shop, $ 20

I mount the 3 metre side of the canvas left or right on the roof rack with cable ties or I use the 2 meter side to mount it on the roof rack at the back. With the barn doors of the GQ open that gives a 2 x 3 metre extra space to access the boot / fridge, to cook or to shelter while watching a movie with the sound out of the barn door loudspeakers.

I made my own two-stage one:

http://i1.tinypic.com/nprq6b.jpg

http://i1.tinypic.com/npro6b.jpg

I ended up spending about $200, but that included six aluminium poles at $15 each and two different sized channels and a single and a double rope rail.
