Hey all
I am thinking of buying a HJ47 or FJ45 ute and would like to know what you think of them.
It would be my weekend fun toy, no comps or touring.
Any problems or weaknesses that you can think of would be great.
Also, what are the differences between the BJ and FJ ?
Thanks in advance
Benny

pretty much bullet proof :D hj is usually 4ltr diesel i think fj is 4ltr petrol and 47 is post '82 i think (most likely wrong but) and a 45 is pre '82 or whateva year it is lol;)
Do it:D

BJ is a 3.??ltr diesel only in a shorty i think!
Thanks REDROCKET
Would stock running gear be able to handle say a 350 or 400ci chev ? I had a 40 series diff in my Lux and it needed a rebuild and I only had a 3.8 V6, but I did do alot of k's.

Should be ok providing they're in good nic to start with. Mate of mine has a 350 in a shorty with stock diffs and it gets hell, even does wheel stands in low on bitumin  .
I plan to use my stock centers in my project shorty with a injected 308 or ls1.

Do it! I just bought a '77 FJ45 about 2 months ago and it's great. I've had 75 series Cruisers, Hiluxes a GU Patrol and this thing is right at the top of the list. No air con, no power steer, foot vents and a whiney transfer case, that's living...I plan to go a 350 in the future and will be using the stock driveline to start with. It should hold up for the weekend warrior stuff I do.
I'm pretty sure the 47's came out with the disc brake front from factory. Mine is drum all round but I have all the parts to convert it, just got to get around to doing it.
Cheers

hate to be the negative one, but CV's, early free wheeling hubs, pre - split case transfer cases (pre 1981 from memory) and early (pre 1979) diff centers will have a hard time with a 350/400 built for torque. drive it easy and it won't implode, but if you enjoy getting on the skinny pedal, that's where your faults will show up.
i've shattered a few cv's, 1 freewheeling hub, 3 transfer cases, and 3 rear diff centers in my time of owning a 40.
all the CV's were broken a standard open diff., as was the freewheeling hub. 2 of the transfer cases, and all the diffs have been broken by the stock petrol 6. the 3rd T case was broken by the stock 3.6litre Diesel... all while running 33 inch tires.
it's the case and gears that are weak, but the later model split case type t case is stronger. the pinion is the weak link on the diff.

so how can ya make them stronger if you do like getting on the skinny pedal.... both with stock motors, and with a 350???

put in a later model "split case" out of a post 1981 40 or a 60/75 series.
you can get cryo treated pinions, but the later model (post 79) fine spline pinions, set up to specs will last, as long as your not getting axle wrap (build a wrap bar if your really planning on getting on it)
throw on late model free wheeling hubs (post 1981... they're the short ASIN ones, not the long WARN ones), and get some longfields and your front end will be rock solid

i thought bj/fj 40-42 were swb.
hj/fj45= utes and fj/hj 47 = wagon/ troop carier
60 sereis diffs and a 60 sereis gearbox would be a solution for week driveline.

yeah but 60s diffs arent a straight swap.
so if your looking for one getting from 80 - 84?? would be the best idea??
and if not getting the 60 seris transfer, and asin hubs gotcha.
the wrap bar. that just a bit of plate welded to the dif like a gusset?? if not can ya explain please.

I've put a chrysler 318ci in my 1964 tray top the diffs are out of an 80's cruiser (with front disc brakes I need to get over the pits in SA) I think the transfer case is out of a 84 (that was done by a previous owner) and a 5 speed out of a toyota dyna haven't broken any of that stuff it does every thing from beach lanching a 2 1/2 tonne boat to donuts with 35inch bf goodi a/t's
Love the 40's

60 series diff CENTERS will fit in 40 series housings. that is a straight swap. and that's what i'm talking about to beef them up.
80-84 is best for driveline (plus they're newer) but the bodies and spring hangers are different. from my limited experience, the later body rusts out the floor more than the older ones. i haven't found an equivelent of the 55 series rear springs to suit the newer spring hangers.

mm rightio.
see im planing my next 4wd, as you know i killed my last one, so i dont want to buy anything to expensive as its going to be a bush truck made for wheeling, not for the road basicaly. so its gotta be tough...
so, a pre 80 45 body, with 60 series centers( it would end up getting front and rear lockers at a later date any ways) post 81 transfer, and asin hubs.
im planing on running 35s/36s to begin with, but want to make it capable of clearing 38s, so what other things should i be thinking about??
im planing on paying of my loan befor i start any of this, so untill that time(atleast a year) im reserching, and i may buy some parts, if they pop up at the right time at the right price.

For what you will pay for a decent 40/45/47 you could buy a HJ/FJ75 and get aircon, P/S and the stronger driveline for about the same.
Unless you want to climb big sandhills for your jollies every time you go out,the stock engines will take you everywhere else without the ongoing overheating and electrical problems most V8 swaps encounter.
If you really want a V8 40/45 look in the classifieds, and fix someone else's engine swap headache.
Most of the hardwork and expense will be done.
By this time if its not running perfect ,the swap has usually worn out the owners pocket and enthusiasm.
You can spend a couple of days fixing his f$%ckups and be a few grand in front;)

don't worry about the year you get really, because most of them have been frankensteined anyway.
if your going to go 38's, i'd skip the late model CV's and go straight for longfields.

Im pretty sure that the BJ models were diesel and the FJ models were petrol. Ive just bought a BJ 40 with a V8 petrol replacement engine so I supose now its a FJ. I`ve had no problems with the drive line at all and I work it pretty hard. With a three speed auto it spins the back tyres in every gear. There bloody tough trucks.
