Maybe we can get a explorist 500 and cross it with a forum sticker so that the sticker can tell us where we are when we are lost? God knows, we dont know where the forum stickers are!

All the same thats a good price for the 500.
Heading off to China in 2 weeks, I'm going to check to see how much they are over there first.

Over 100 bucks - just checked and the quote to Tassis was 123US. Makes no point to buy at that rate - almost to eBay buy it now price, and no risk of Customs and import taxes should the import get pinged at the border.

There was a Thread not long ago that listed a lot of different US based websites. I'm sure that if you got a few people together on the forum and got a group purchase the postage would be cheaper if split, then distrubite them when they arrive in AUS. And see Magellen Basemap thread for who can help out there.
Just a thought.

That's a very expensive freight to Aus for something as small as a GPS. Was he sending it express? Insured express or what? I bought some lockers and it only cost me $45 Australian to get it shipped here. As far as customs is concerned you'll only pay a duty on items over $1,000 so it may not be worth group buying.

I'm heading to the U.S. in the Spring and considering buying a gps there. Just not sure which one.

You don't pay duty on items of less than $1000 if you use the postal service. If you use a courier service it has to be less than $250. So don't use a courier service.

I did query the postage costs and they advised that it was a tracked, insured (FedEx) system that avoided any hassles. They would not mail it any other way unfortunately, and did not mention anything about postage including taxes - which I think are not applicable under 1K.

Me thinks the eBay trick of making extra money on postage is also at work here. Anyway, it was not worth the hassle compared to paying a little more (less than 100 bucks) locally, and getting local support, local base map and a 3 year warranty to boot.
