Hey guys,

Just interested how you all setup your big tarps for a bit of shelter when away camping. I just invested in a 7 x 3m jobby and am wondering how many extendable tent poles you reccomend I get and if I need a bar to go across the center or anything?

Cheers,
Jon

This is a pic of our tarp setup. We have a complete framework of extendable poles along each side and one across the middle to give it a bit more strength. It takes about 10 minutes to get it all set up.

Hi guys first post so hope it right.

This is our usual tarp set-up. This photo is from Fraser last year. Tarp is 9m x 6m and we have poles every 2m with 1 centre pole. Probably a bit of overkill but fixing tarps after a down pour in tropical QLD while trying to enjoy a beer decided it was worth it for uninterupted drinking. Takes about 20mins to set-up, 30 mins with tent and esky.http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u313/willdive/campsiteatWaddy.jpg

mrbishi, got the poles from Big W, very expensive (not). think at the time cost $4 each. Centre pole was from BBQ Galoure they make them with plastic caps about 120mm in dia to spread the weight and protect the tarp.

Make sure that you get the 2.1m poles as they come in 2 sizes. 1.8m is ok if you are a midget but i am 6ft 2 and wife is 5ft 10 and don't feel like ducking all the time.

This is my awning setup. It's a 10 x 12ft tarp mounted on a steel tube inside a piece of 100mm pvc pipe with a slot cut along the length of it. It has a bolt head on the fwd end of the steel tube so it just winds up with a socket. Three poles and a couple of minutes and you have got instant sun/rain protection.

not always practical but, when we tow the caravan up to fraser we take one of those white supercheap carports. they are big and heavy to transport (fits in caravan so who cares) but only take about 20 mins to setup and you have a super stable 6m x 3m area to sit under. one year we had 2 side by side which gave us 6m x 6m, was great except when rained the water came in down the centre. we now also take a couple of those quick erect market stall type structures, heaps more expensive to buy but lighter and smaller to carry, and quicker to erect.

Hey Mick, I like that setup do you have any more photo's (close ups etc)of the pvc pipe and winding set up, I'm looking for something similar for my GQ. I've had a look around I could buy a couple which go for about $395.00, I thought I could make something up cheaper. Does the setup come off when you don't arn't using it day to day?

It's a 12ft x 16ft tarp with 10 tri-poles (for better storage) and good pegs, ropes and springs. I also use 2x ridge poles which are extendable to 16ft wide as i plan to get a bigger tarp. Gotta keep my kitchen dry ;)

I loosely based the awning on a writeup i found on the lcool website http://www.lcool.org/technical/sunshade/sun_shade.html. I probably made the awning a bit long as the forward end of the awning has a bit of a droop in it when it is sitting on the 4by but it is fine when it is extended and in use. A 10ft wide tarp is the biggest you will get inside a 100mm pipe as it is a tight fit when rolled up, however this means that i didn't need a locking device to stop it unrolling. The brackets are standard rhino 100mm pipe brackets with a 40mm piece cut out of it to allow the tarp to roll out of the pipe. All I do is slide the brackets into my racks and tighten the four bolts... done. No close up photos as yet but i'll try and work on it.

I made a centre spread using square section from Bunnings - the DIY steel fencing stuff - abour 25x25. 2x2m lengths cost me about $30, and I have a peice of 40mm round bar to join the two pieces togther in the middle. The square sections slide inside the circular bit.

Believe it or not it was gated camp ground at Waddy Point. Normally we camp about 2km north of Waddy beind the dunes but decided to be closer to hot showers this year. Got to get north of Indian Head because hire trucks can't go any further under their rental agreements so less idiots with no idea on how to drive.

Don't have a pic of it , but if I am travelling light, ie no Camping Trailer or tent, I tie my snatch strap to a tree, up about 6 or 7 feet then the other end to the rear of my roof rack or right over the top from rear, over the rack and then to the bullbar, drive forward to add just a slight bit of tension to the strap...not to much, then hang the tarp over the tensioned strap to the ground, hammer in pegs.....presto, tent with rear access to the vehicle fridge etc..... I use a 20'x 18' tarp bigger the better, heaps of room under it for every thing.
Will take a pic next time I do it..

cheers

Mate, if you look closely the stove fits behind the tap and it can be moved over another full inch or more to the right leaving about 2.5 inches on the left which is plenty of room. It's moved over a bit because i was wiping around doing a bit of spring cleaning :)

Nice one! where did you get the poles? and what do you use on your centre pole to stop it from damaging the tarp?

We usually get a piece of polly pipe that has a hole drilled in one side which the "point" of the pole slots into nicely.

....if the pipe doesn't make the trip - a beer can (on its side) works wonders!:)

after many many camps with a big tarp 18ft x 16ft we use a taller centre pole and ridge bar but to stop the centre pole ripping through the tarp we use a golf ball with a hole drilled through it, tennis balls tended to flex and tear in big winds. We also throw long ropes from corner to corner (diagonally) to help hold down the sides when windy. Our only problem these days is it fills up in big rain storms.

No, only off the end edges like a gutter, the tarp has a rope edge stitched on that side and threaded into a piece of sail track mounted on a 1 1/2"x1/2" 3mm aluminium bar to hold out against the strong winds we get over here on the coorong.

I have never been keen on tarps and have seen them to be a pain in the a$$ watching others use them... Until this weekend, with rain almost a given for our (my first) trip up to Rubicon. This is the first 4wding expedition my partner of almost a year has been on, so I thought I'd better put a big effort into making it comfortable for her, spesh cause we only use a king single swag (it's a lovely cozy fit) and we roll it out on the tray...

So I thought I'd tarp it, and tarp it I did!!!

Enter the "TARP-MAHAL"

At Supercheap I found these ingenious little things called "Tarpgrabbers"
They're a self biting clip for your tarp when you want to attach a rope somewhere there's not a rope ring.

The one on the left is the top camp area at Waroona Dam. The water is 500 meters away. Good for sking and fresh water fishing (and there is plenty of mud ;) ).

The one on the right is Nanga Mill. An icy cold creek runs next to the camp.

Both are just over an hour out of Perth (but can get packed).

I slide this 7.2 x 3.6 into the sail track on the side of our camper. Pegs are .750 mm long star posts, because it gets very windy and is all sand where we camp. Stretcher rails come strait off the ones that are already on the camper for the annex. Where I have skipped uprights i have stainless steel re-usable cable ties holding everything together. I have the annex set up on the other side for the shower and toilet tents. All sides can be closed in with either shade cloth or tarps depending on the weather. It helps when your best mate is an upholsterer!

When it rains we lower the centre poles and put a 200L plastic drum under. Have collected a full 200 Litres on one night.

I just bought one of those awnings that mount on the roof, is about 3x3 m comes with every thing included poles ropes pegs and mounting brackets. Cost $279 from BCF, best part is i can pull it out of the rail that it comes in and put it in the rail on the side of my wifes horse float so it is good for both camping and when she goes out with those damm creatures.

Great set-up Vanda, in a great part of the world. I'm trying to place your location.........south of Yardie Creek?

Hey Tomax,
Yes south of Yardie creek. It's in Lefroy Bay behind the locked gate (an area that the lease owners have set aside for long term campers only). Been going up there each year for 11 years now, love it.

I bought a waterproof awning from ebay for next to nothing, is one of my best purchases so far for camping, weighs a little and is probably the most heaviest item l have to put in the car but is worth it.

It is one of the retractable awnings, says it needs two to put up but have done it on my own. It came with a covering for 3 sides which is easy to attach and can be changed depending on wind direction.

Regardless of the length of stay l always take it as it provides great protection in all kinds of weather.

I hyave this awning fitted to my truck. Had it about 6 years and was moved over from my previous Patrol. Works a treat and excellent build quality and I went the silver tarp version to assist in reflrcting some of the heat.....Made by Campout Products in Brisbane

I've had several set's of BFG's in various varient's over the years and have found them to be very reliable and that's what I want. Mine are in 17in so they are quite dear....285/70R17 in BFG Muddies are about $425 when I got these so not cheap. They are about $100 cheaper for 16in so I'm looking at going 16in on my next purchase....

PS: I'm from near Mackay, a little north Cannonvale near Airle Beach.....My Parents now live in Mackay. Very nice part of Aust....

This is the setup we use when alot of people come camping
There is a %^$t load of poles but it does not blow over or leak and has heaps of room and stops alot of the wind also have a tarp for one end if the rain is blowing in wrong direction.

And its always a good way of telling how pissed you really are when you get up to go for a piss, see how well you miss the ropes

A cpl of hootchies clipped together does the job for short stays, there are 2 bodies in that mess of blankets under the shelter.
