ok, we all hear about the good gear, but what about the dumbest, or what you have seen. Does the handbrake make you find a 12V curling iron to go scrub?
I have a shiny, stainless steel dog bowl.
I don't have a dog.

Damn, I got both of them, not sure why, seemed like a good idea at the time.:( I think the dumbest is those wardrobes, why would you want to take a folding wardrobe, when you have all your clothes in a bag to start with.

Took some newbies camping recently they travelled with a kitchen sink set up that included checkers & backgammon, they used my trusty sml red dish that we've carried around for 10yrs or so.

Yeah i know that kitchen sink set up... my Mrs wants one... i keep telling her it is to heavy... it's working for now...
I remember travelling with someone who carried about 150 L of water in 10 L containers. Thought that was a bit odd for three days camping next to a river.

we got given one of those silly aluminum foldup kitchen benches for a birthday. Have used it twice in two years when we went for 2 weeks on fraser. I want to stick it on ebay but the mrs reckons she would use it more if she remembered. Lucky I pack the ute everytime. The tailgate is a much better option anyway.

1 of those fold up barbeque plates that are half grills that you put directly over the fire. Bought it about 5 yrs ago, used it once, got lazy & gas just seems so much easier. I still have it in my camping gear corner as I am sure I will use it again 1 day  next would be the fishing rod & gear as I never catch fish, prefer drinking. ;)

i read more of the thread and still find that the missus and her "accesories" are the dumbest, space using, weight wasting, beer abusing camping gear you can bring
My missus got us a second tent a black wolf and the pegs that come with it are that thin that my 4 year old bend them playing with them. They got to be kidding.

2 burner stove, carted it around WA for 5 weeks, used it once, instead used camp kitchens and a old round barbeque burner which I never leave home ever. Takes up no space, hotter and faster than the stove.
Hairdryer hmm, went on holiday up to Kimberleys, convinced good lady to leave hairdryer at home as no power. Weather turned out very cold and every night for the first week we stayed in caravan parks - with power! Doh! I now find room for it on every trip.

I think I win this one. For my birthday my sister bought me of all things - a tent peg remover. This is basically a hook with a handle on it, not being a camping person she didn't know that you can just use another peg to pull them out. I carry it around just to show that I haven't turfed it, although I never use it.

Im buying one this weekend,I like cooking over an open fire.I take the gas bottle and stove as well for quick meals.
As for unwanted junk on a trip,my teen son would be the champ at that.
Last month we went Perth to Uluru. I mentioned it might be cold so he packed 2 doonas,a blanket and 4 pillows. He also wanted to take his dumbells along which I managed to taalk him out of.
He also wanted to take 3 pairs of shoes.
Next time we go somewhwere I will be taking a closer look at what he is packing.
I just got so sick of moving his 4 bags and extra bedding every time I wanted something:rolleyes:

Isnt it funny how we carry so many things that arnt even for our own use? For example, i have 2 handheld uhf radios in the glovebox .. not for emergencies - just so that i can give one to the other people who dont have any, i have a permanent unit in the car and it shits me when i cant use it.

Yeah I alway carry spare batteries AAA's,AA's 9v, and I dont even have an appliance that runs on AAA's or 9V but I never seem to come home with any left.
Ours would have to be those crappy, useless, good for nothing wire/mesh toasters for going on the gas stove............ we stuff them every trip & the toast is Sh@t......... & now we just throw the bread on the BBQ plate........ BUT we still keep 2 in the camper just in case............. I've vented & fell better now thankyou !!!!!!

Hey i take a wok with me, but in true style it is an old plough disc i ripped off the old girl down in the paddock an welded a piece of flat around it. After loosing an entire stir fry one night, me and the old man have modified it to make it anti-flip over. A classic.

erm i use those toaster thingies over a few coals. works fine...are you sure you have it the right way up :)
hammock- love it wouldnt leave home without it. I have tie downs to hold roof stuff on. I then use em to hold the hammock to the tree. 20 seconds and Im in.
clothes cupboard. I hated diggin around in bags, after a few days stuff is just anywhere but where you last stuffed it. We bought frameworked clothes cupboard and after a few mods I can stuff it with clothes, collapse it so its a large suitcase. get to camping, expand it, shove in the frame and bingo cothes in a neat, shelved environment. Also self pleats trousers :)
dumbest bit of camp gear tho was my kayak once.. got to the lagoon and the lagoon was dry. Please note this was the same trip another vehicles yak went sailing due to bad tie down.

"They" huh? Well, I am a "they", and have never in my life felt even the slightest urge to take any electrical appliance out bush.... Heck! I've lived a large portion of my life with no power from any source.....
The thing about hair driers and curling irons and shite like that is that the only time your hair goes stupid is when you use them...... it's a cycle thing, if you use them, then you require them. So don't use them! Your hair is actually a lot healthier without them, I get comments from hairdressers anytime I do go in, which is only every couple of years LOL on how strong my hair is, and they always say it's because I don't use rediculous appliances and products........
Anyway, I don't think I've ever taken anything rediculous out. Swag, Billy (old Milo tin) one frypan/barbie plate, Alfoil for taters, matches, and a carton of Rum bottles (It's cheaper that way ;) )
Also an AIRTC "Vet" LOL Never took a Wok, though at the time (Long long ago) The essential for a NavEx was a jar of Nutella LOL

My missus and I looked for about 3 months to find a set of pots that all fit inside each other.... paid about $60 for a set and have carried the pieces of crap around with me for about 2 years now and have never used them... not even once!............ seemed like a good idea at the time though!
Or there is the black shower bags that you put out in the sun... the ones that I bought just leak and are a complete pain in the arse... not to mention that the kids drained the water out of the camper tank to fill the pieces of sh*t and didn't even use the water for showering... I hate them!!

I got given one of them by my inlaws years ago, best bit of gear i've ever carried cos it takes up stuff all room.
My missus wants to take the breadmaker next time we go camping?! I talked her out of it by saying I would need a 1000 watt(minimum) inverter plus a third battery to power it. I won!

Tyer Pliers and tyre repair kit - never had to use it.
Murphy you out there??? Murph????
A mate's ex-missus (he was there - he would be the only bloke silly enough to take her anywhere!!!!)
She stood there looking at the frypan of BURNING sausages with the comment "THEIR BURNING".
When told to turn them the comeback was hilarious:
"I CAN'T COOK SAUSAGES - I CAN ONLY EAT THEM"
We were eating lamb roast in the camp oven at the time.
My worst items:
- Those damn cheap butane stoves that run on an aerosol can. When it gets cold they don't bloody work - Found that out in winter in Tasi, even in the high country in Autumn. Basically if its chilly and you want a hot drink or to cook lunch - they won't bloody work!!!!
- Those "BUG & SHELTER" tents. They work great for the bugs, but they offer F*#kall protection if it rains - the roof is smaller than the floor!!!!!

Never again. Now they are banned from camping for life.

I went to the Cape with my dad a few years ago. Mum packed the food for us.....
10 Packets of Cheese Sauce.......
I don't like macaroni and cheese!!!!
We came back with 8 packets.
However I won't complain about the slice and cakes she packed, I was still eating fruit cake 4 weeks later on the way home, and we were sharing it with our travelling crew.
My dad thought my 400mm pegs were a waste of time.... "Who-the-hell-needs-pegs-this-bloody-long!" as he was hitting them.
However when we spent 5 days on the sand at Punsand Bay, the pegs kept the tarp up while the sand pegs kept the tent up.
Saying that, there was one small incident at the Nissan Trials one year with a 2" PVC water pipe....... ooops.
We did buy a 12V bottle warmer for our little boy.... It was plugged in for an hour and I reckon sitting on the bottle would have worked better.

i bought a full size kitchen sink for cleaning fish when camping.
used it once and was a big annoying pain.
i got one of thoes remote control battery lanterns people called me lazy when they go up to turn there gas lantern i pressed a button not lazy its called smart.
Also i gave the lantern to this chick and when in her tent i had a great laugh turning it on and off on her and she was going off saying it doesn't work and come fix it.
Also went on a fishing /camping trip, we had a powered camp site.
so we took a fridge/freeze/ oh and the best part a 60cm tv with a play station 2, while everyone else was doing nothing at night , cause it was a (total fire ban) we were playing grand turismo,
we would get the occassional spectator who would stand there for 5 or 10 mins watching us do burnouts on the game.
