another question for you 4WD nuts... how do you guys go about preventing your spotties from getting stolen? someone mentioned something about locknuts to me, others recommend spot-welding the thread(i'd rather not), and it's even been suggested i drill a hole through the bolt and padlock them :o
i'm sort of worried that i'm going to come back from a fishing spot to find my lightforce spotties have disappeared of the bull bar>:(

any tips would be great.

thanks

At the moment I prevent them getting stolen by not fitting expensive lights.
Other than this, most of my ideas on theft prevention are illegal in this country, but they would be effective.

I have the same idea BT,
If it aint the most expensive, then it wont be the first stolen.

i had my lite force spotties stolen the little shits !
i then did the following on my new spotties it requires the old fassioned riverts and 2 hammers (be carefull not to hit the lights when doing this !!
first drill a hole in the thread making sure you leave the nut on this is so you can take the burs off with the nut alot of people wouldnt recomend this but i did it,it worked ok!
after fitting them i placed the riverts in the holes and belted them with the hammer the only thing is if i need to get them off i have to grind the riverts down its effective and my spotties are still there !!
i did change the spotties too

might be a good little earner to invent a good security system for spotties.

Whats the world comming to when we have to worry about things being pinched. Left my old 6x4 trailer on the nature strip last night, four guys in a dark coloured Commodore roll up no lights on and precede to take my trailer lucky my neighbour sees it and turns his outside light on and they take off without my trailer. Trailer now chained to my boat which does have a hitch lock on it........... Dazz

yeah it's a bit of a hard one, i think no matter how much you tried to prevent them from getting stolen, if the idiots wanted them badly enough, they'll still manage some how >:(
i'm pretty pleased with the lightforce spotties, i was originally going to buy the HID's, but i talked my self out of it ::)

i like the rivet idea, i might look into that.

thanks again for the info guys.

And if they cant steal it they will get upset and smash it.
Just because they can >:(

I had some bastards smash my window to steal the 40cents in my ash tray and they took the ash try aswell that had my spare odds and ends in it.
Shoud be allowed to electrify these things so they get a bigger shock thatn you do when you return to the car!

That is what I was referring to as being illegal in this country.
I ran a high powerred fence charger (40,000 VDC) to 1 of my cars a few years ago when a person was going around keying the cars in my area.
The police came to my door & gave me an official warning.

BTW my car never had another scratch though, & I still have the fence charger.

My father in-law used to have a portable electric fence that he used for his horses that ran off a car battery but was known to also hook it up the other things aswell.
This worked well to keep things where they were left when out for a ride in the bush.

well it looks as though i have found something which may be useful.
i was talking to a customer yesterday and something came up about 4WDing amongst the fishing chat, it eventually came th the topic of spotties, he mentioned that he had the lightforce RMDL170's. i brought up the issue of theft, and he said come and check this out... no it wasn't a electric zapper thingy like some of you guys have suggested, but an ingenius type of lock nut.
they are a little hard to explain, but basically it consists of two locknuts per light, one which goes onto the thread of the bolt on the leg of the light, and another which goes onto the thread of the main fixture bolt.
they are a similar idea to the lock nut you would use on your wheels, needing a 'key' to undo them, but it is a better design.
apparently they are manufactured by a mob in South Oz called Galaxy, and are $70 for a set of four. it sounds a bit rich, but i'd rather pay that than $400 for a new set of lights. at this stage they have only been designed for lightforce lights, but i'm getting the information on the manufacturer later this week. i'll pass it on when i can.
i'm sorta thinking i'll buy the lock nuts and a zapper, no one will mess with my lights then :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

by the way, thanks for the feedback. :D

Sounds like a great idea.

Would be great to see what they are and they might have a lot of buisness coming there way.

Be nice if someone could invent something which had the crooks 'stick' to the car when trying to steal something. You could come out in the morning and call the cops......after giving them a bit of a flogging of course... ;D ;D ;D ;D

If you put enough voltage through the lights, maybe they will stick there. Police can catch them "RED HANDED"

;D (Sorry for the bad jokes, its early)

the lock nuts i mentioned to suit lightforce lights are manufactured by "GALAXY PRODUCTS" at Cavan, South Oz. the person to contact is Barrie Powell on (08) 8349 5422.
i phoned him yesterday and he said they will have a new batch ready in about a week.

cheers guys.

to keep things simple and cheap, find a couple of bits of flat steel about 30mm wide. bend up two "U"'s and cross them over each other. a spot of weld to hold them together and then dill a hole just big enough to take the bolt for the light. now tighten the nut with a socket. the size of the the "U"s is up to you.

opportunistic thieves dont gennerally carry socket sets. you can weld the "U"s to the bar if you wish.

cheers ;D

i"m pretty sure the locknut's are an optional extra when you buy IPF's my IPF's have them but they were on the car when i bought it, so don't quote me on this one.

i was told about them, apparently you can buy them from ARB to suit most lights. i dunno what they sell for or what they look like, but i'll be looking into it.

i like the idear of the two u,s welded together but how about a 10 or 13 mm washer welded on to a piece of pipe 50mm long and big enough to take a socket put the washer and pipe over the bolt shove the nut in the socket and screw it up ???

Sounds like fun.
I have a few ideas that would be effective. Unfortunately they are a tad illegal.
EG Electric Fence Charger connected to a loose wire near the light.
They are bound to bump it if they try to remove the light.

Should prove interesting to watch them light themselves up. ;D

RobertM
16-09-2003, 09:30 AM
I think we just need to hook the lights up to the starter so if they touch them the car will lurch forward and teach the bastards a leason

cuttin loose

or try one of these.... ;D ;D ;D

Do these prevent the lowlifes from unscrewing the body from the mount?

I had a set of cibie with a lock - it was a cylinderical piece of metal with the correct thread cut through the centre and held in position by a allen key

as far as i know the only way to get them off with the lock nuts on is to smash it!
