nice trucks  ......i remember seeing in "one of the mags" a few years ago now,a guy in iceland(?) who had an 80 series all built up with 44's and heaps of lift and other goodies.used it as a tour bus taking clients to the arctic circle and frozen tundra areas. thing was over 8 feet to the roofline.
his name was "siggi" or something like that.....anyone else seen it or have a pic of it?

Yeah, I think I do recall one by that name... just dont know where from. There is some bloody big 80's out there. There was one parked at fourby's tyre shop ages ago which was absolutely huge with the arctic flares I think they called them (Really wide toyota flares) running up near 40 inch tyres too.

hey vin vin
i couldnt afford a 'real' spare wheel carrier to carry my 35'' tyre, so last year some one decided to burn a frontera and leave it in the bush up here. So one day i ''found'' the spare wheel carrier off this frontera. After several drinks i decided to take the plunge and drill 4 holes through the big barn door. The bolts go all the way through, with spacers inside the door, so not to crush it. It has been on there now for 12 months- went to watch the outback challenge last year and i did 5,000 kms in that trip,, also did 12,000 kms through central qld,nt, simpson and back home... So i am happy with it, no rattles, no squeaks.

Siggi was a multivalve turbo diesel, auto IIRC. Started life as a Toyota press vehicle before the transformation using bits from Artic Trucks.
From the story I heard, it had at least different ratio diffs.

I was trying to decide which snorkel to get for mine, an Airtec or a Safari??? I had a Safari on my old Pajero and it was nice and solid and it looked good too, but I also like the Airtecs as I use to fit them when I worked at TJM. I might just go for the cheapest as they both look good and I'll be fitting it myself!!! Has anyone out there had any dramas with either of these snorkels????

13-04-2007, 02:47 PM
Would recommend the Safari, first one I have fitted and it slotted straight in with no dramas :D
I think the Safari is 3.5" dia and the airtec is 3" dia, but I could be wrong on that

Ahhh a snorkel. I was going to get one fitted for hubby for his birthday, but have no clue which one. Seeing he almost drowned ours last week, i think the snorkel better come sooner rather than later. So which is the best one to get, how much am i looking at? Last time i went in to get a quote (for suspension), TJM quoted me $300 more than they quoted hubby for the same job, must be a case of hoping i was a dumb, clueless woman. Want to be well informed from now on.
Anyway, this is our 80, a few modifications since we bought her all sagged out, with a lot more work to go. Shes an artwork in progress, lmao.

after looking at the whole geometry of the front axle with the plates fitted it just didnt seem right, visbly looked too much castor, so i took off the plates tonight and now they live in the shed!
After doing some calcs I am not convinced that the plates are in fact 5degrees, I think they are way in excess of this........still shed spares in case I decide to go higher :)

How big is your lift, mines a 5" and it drives beautifully. Alot better than it did without the caster plates and the tyres wear evenly also!!!!
gtir300
14-04-2007, 12:27 AM
was a lead a bum steer by the guy who did the alignment (should have had it rechecked!) as it only has a 3" lift and was registering 5deg out. From looking at it on the hoist this arvo looks like it needs between 2-3deg which would mean there is sufficient gap between tie rod and control arms........I would have to have ground a lot of metal from the arms and was just not happy with taking that much off.
I'll see how it goes, dont want to put castor bushes in due to restricted flex and longevity.

If you don't have one, set up a free account with a photo hosting site, such as www.photobucket.com
Then, upload pics from your pc to photobucket. Once uploaded, copy the IMG code under the pic and then paste it into your message on here. Once you've done it once or twice, it'll be second nature to you.

mmmm without a body lift u'll have to use pretty small tube to allow the lower tail gate to open without hitting. I've used 60mmOD tube and i've only got bout 6mm cleaance at the closest spot.
Looks like that green 80 ute has a chassis trim too.
Good luck with it;)
Hey Udm, what sort of front suspension are you running there? That's awesome front flex; nicely balanced front and rear too, which is very rare these days.thanks mate.
As others have already mentioned, it does have some trick bits in the front, but still limited by the shocks... shame though that the shocks are fairly new (bought them before the 5link), or I would be getting longer ones :D

Come on are there any other 80 series owners out there with some nice pics!!!!!:computer: We have to start beating that Hilux Thread!!!!!
heres my 80, only picked her up from byron bay on friday arvo, and ive already put her though her paces.
shes a 4.5 petrol auto, with 33.5" tires, 3"suspension lift with kings springs all round and old man emu long travel shocks and steering dampener. 40L air tank mounted underneath and a 70Lwater tank where the spare should be, duel batterys and under bonnet compressor, rear draws(which are for sale if anyones keen) a 40L engle fridge and polyair air bags in the ass(also for sale). ive just bicked up 5xsunny rims to which ill be adding 35"tires to soon enough.
work to be done in the next couple of weeks is a 10'000pound winch, rear air locker, rockhopper gears, full 2.5"exhaust with extractors and a few other bits and pieces.

Mate, that looks awesome. Looks like they have done a great job.
What sort of cost (ballpark) is involved in this kind of conversion?
No ballpark figures, fixed price. When I had it done it was $9995. This included all mod plating and fitted child restraints. They do have a website, but i'm not too sure what it is. Sounds expensive, but it's sure worth it in the end. I looked at others(which were cheaper) and you could tell the difference. All tax deductible for me so I didn't need much convincing. A lot of people said to go buy a hilux, but a hilux aint no 80 series.

well i have a lux and a 80. they are both good in their own ways. the lux takes a poundin day after day and never seems to break(much). the 80 is grunty, high and goes nearly anywhere. it's a case of horses for courses. i luv em both
i really love the 80's, but i love my lux's
the only problem with the lux is she is slow, needs balls other than that i love em.
if i win the lotto i will buy one or a 100 and have both :)

Also you've still got the aircon thing hanging out, you can "gently" bend that up. Was always concerned about it sitting out in the open, same as the pwr steering lines.. hence the plate. You still running the X's. Its MUDFEST next weekend, you should come.

This is my 80 Series - picked it up 3 months ago stock, since then have added Cooper St, Dobinson suspension, cargo barrier and have to find time to fit newly acquired snorkle. Only problem I have with the 80 series is should have seen the light earlier!

I was lucky with my lift as I did'nt pay a cent for it!!!! I got it for nothing when I worked at TJM, it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time!!!! A local tyre bloke that I know came in and asked if we had any standard springs and shocks to fit an 80 series as he had the job of removing the lifted springs and shocks out of this other 80 for a car yard, anyway I asked him how big the lift was and what were they going to do with all the lifted gear. He said they were just gunna throw it away as it was too high for anything they could use. I then said to him if it's got a lift that big it would have adjustable panard rods and they don't like to be lowered back to standard height without readjustment but if I could have the lifted gear in exchange for my standard gear and if do the swap for him can I have the suspension. He said sure so I did the swap that saturday morning in about 2 1/2hrs before work and it's been in ever since no problems!!!!!! Cool hey!!!!!:thumb:

Yeah mate, absolutely I have made a few sets now, first the old patrol then mates Hilux and now the cruiser.
question first; does yours have (like mine) the large CAT between the chassis and and the body just below the drivers door?
EDIT: don't know where Yeppoon C/QLD is. do you get to the southside of brissy at all??
This was the end product for the Patrol's ones,
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f172/Nevynphoto/Finalprod-1.jpg
Cruisers are a little more complicated as the gap between the chassis and body is larger and that CAT makes it really painful. I will takes some pics tomorrow of my end result if you want. I go a little overkill using 75 mil RHS with a 5mil sidewall and 10 mil thick brackets. sits just below the sill and does the job well.
do you have an email address??

Firstly, no I don't have the resignator (cat) under the drivers seat as I've got Gennie Extractors and 21/2" Exhaust so all that is gone on mine!!!
Secondly, Yeppoon is about halfway up the QLD coast just east of Rockhampton, I don't go to Brissie very often unless I really need to!!!
I've fitted a few sets to 80 series cruisers when I worked at TJM in Rocky and they use to fabricate their own, from what I can remember on the 80 series to get around the exhaust they went under the exhaust and mounted straight to the gear box mounts on the drivers side and they just squash the end of the pipe for added clearance so that side of it is'nt too much of a drama, but because they were all side rails and steps and not just steps on their own I was abit stuck on how to make the sit neatley inside the standard front mudflaps without looking crap???
I'll PM you my Email address but if you have any pics for me you can just put them up on here as well if you want as they might help others with the same problem in the future!!!:thumb: Thanks Reedy!!!:waycool:

Well mine are nothing fancy, they are pretty average to look at but they definately take a punch. I searched around on Overlander and found a few peoples for the original idea then just modified it.
The bar below the CAT slightly reduces the clearance but it protects it well and I am never bothered if it does touch out.

Yeah I stole that idea off someone elses design from Overlander, just went bigger and added the extra support in the centre. yours would simply be the same as the left and not need the dropped brace on the right. I figure I can remove the right one and modify it back up when I change the exhaust, for now it guards the CAT.
Definately no probs.

this is what i am going to build my steps like.... but still have to figure out what to do with the custom exhaust that runs along the side (where the step brackets would have to be) and goes out before the rear wheel.

Just a quick question, do ealy four runners rims fit an 80 series?
depends..
if they are 16" rims they will fit all 80's.. if they are 15" rims then they will only fit pre nov 92's, cos they have smaller brakes..
