Hey, just wondering if anyone has purchased a gps from overseas, more so USA. I dont want to start the whole purchase from aus argument, but i just want to know if they've had problems getting it here or putting aus software on or things like that.
ive done some research on the Explorist XL. Retails here for around $1100 with travel pack but you can buy the same product brand new on USA ebay for about $400 AUS. After you buy the aus software for 200ish, thats a fair saving.
Any info would be great
Cheers

there are already several threads going on this topic you should read them. I'm going to the US next month and was going to ask if anyone wanted me to bring back a magellan or two and the acc to go with them, as i have access to thing that makes a US based magellan more Australian and will share.

I'm also going to buy one from the US in a few days, so hoping all will go well. I am however a bit unsure how it will work with having a US base map and not an Oz one. Will this cause any problems loading Oz maps? And how will it work with different Datums etc. Does US use a different Datum to Oz?
(Sorry - thread hijack complete!!):D

Datums are relative to the map they are used in conjunction with. If you are using a printed map then you should check what datum the map was produced to and set your GPS unit to the same datum. The same can be said for electronic versions.
As far as I know the Australian maps will be AGD?? unless they are very new as in produced in the last few years. The HEMA maps might be using this datum now. The ?? is the year number of the reference datum. The latest current datum is GDA94 and is the same as WGS84. Using the correct datum relevant to your map will save you getting a little bit lost.
