Hi All,
Basic issue is how to get all to work together on the laptop? Heres the facts
1: Bought Magellan Explorist XL with all maps on SD
2: Have a Mac so Mapsend etc doesnt work,
3: Now have Windows running bootcamp so installed Mapsend Lite ( which came with it)
4: Have somehow managed to download the topo maps from the Magellan SD card onto the hard drive
5: My issue is I cant get Mapsend to read or import them... the manual tells you how to go the other way ( converting CD maps to the GPS) but not the other way
SO if any of you kind people know the steps etc, many thanks as otherwise im just left staring at a big blue map of Australia....
cheers
Mike

You actually select your detailed maps when you are in the map view page. I'll look at it when i get home and post instructions on what menu files to look for.

I bought an XL on Thursday, with the traveller pack. It's a great GPS isn't it? I think Magellan GPS's are overpriced for what they are, but they are still the best for 4wd use
I also have a Mac but not an Intel Mac yet. I'll be buying a Macbook this month and hope to install Windows to use mapsend on it.
I think you'll find instructions on the Magellan site:

Thanks ill be checking it all out, ps sporadic decided on bootcamp or Parellels yet,, switching between operating systems is painful but bootcamp is free and gives better 3d/graphics support whereas with Parallels you switch between them on the fly but dont quite have the graphic support..

^^^ I'll be using Parallels running windows off a boot camp partition. Parallels supports that now. That way I can use windows without rebooting, but reboot into windows off the same partition if I need to. Parallels is slower than boot camp but it's very convenient if you usually use Mac OS X and don't want to restart.

sounds good, im only using windows for 2 apps so ill probably stick with bootcamp,, ps you will love the intel macs, other than adobe products, very good
Once you've loaded your detailed maps, (Aus. states), into mapsend, don't forget to zoom down into the map to show the details, (tracks etc.)
Have fun!

It is under the 'GPS Contents' menu and then select 'Map Manager' and then click on the icon for 'add map' then go find your map files. I have an XL too and absolutely love it!

Hi All,
well a long sorry saga...( frustration)... ended up the magellanXL i bought with the SD card had Mapsend version 1 with no GPS Contents,,, anyway so i find out old version so download new version 2,, install,,, hey have that option ( GPS CONTENTS) ... so following the intruction files, spend the night tranferring maps across as per instructions... guess what, ... no luck at all, still a big green map of Australia,,, ive transferrd all the maps across from the GPS SD card, nothing, still cant access them... How do you load them into mapsend? sort of getting frustrated, well more than frustrated.. ready to chuck the GPS in the river and get another brand with easier software for idiots like me.... i just want to access the topo maps ive paid for,,, ps Australia looks good as a flat colour for only a while
cheers,
sorry for the post but this really gets me, i can install most things on a computer,, and have never had such problems on what should be a simple process,,, loading a map file..... anyways, heres hoping one of you kind people can offer a suggestion, so heres where im at:
] Ive loaded the maps from the SD card through GPS Contents/Map Manager..they wont load?

Mike,
If all else fails, ring the guys, or girls, at Next Destination in W A
They should be able to talk you through to fix things.
The lady there sorted out my querries eventually when I bought mine.

Well either through sheer stupidity or persistance i finally got mapsend to work on Windows on the map,, two thinks i learnt
1: Get the updated beta which actually had the "Map Manager"
2: Plug GPS in to computer when first fired up the maps,
I will admit the only frustrating thing is that you cant view any detail until you zoom to a certain distance, ie be great to see all of QLD or NSW when your viewing the state so you can see your trip in a overview,, also dont see towns/cities names on the maps,, see pubs/ cemeteries but no town names,,,
anyway at least its working, also got the firmware update as well to the XL..
thanks for the help guys

Hey Igutso, I'm glad you got it working. I have just set up a Magellan XL to work with Windows XP Home, through Parallels, on a Macbook. It seems to work pretty well.

sorry to barge in but this definately caught my eye as the XL is high on my list. Would you recommend this as a good gps or is it a bit harder to use than others?

I recommend the XL. It's pretty easy to use, although you do need to read the manual. I have never used another GPS, other than an old Magellan, so I can't really comment on whether it's easier or harder to use than others.
