how much do they cost??
To buy a premade one thats capable..........around $800 right up to around $2000 for all the good gear. To build one, probably a few hundred.
I have some pics, not of mine though, but still good.
Just gotta wait for the gallery to come back online.

This is my CLOD POS
About $200 to get it to this stage.
I bought a cheap clod on ebay and some rod ends. The rest i have laying around the house.
Its still not finished. the wheel base is 17" and 13" wide
Locked diffs , no reduction, sh1t motors and narrowed wheels. Still climbs really well.

why are they all eletric and never see petrol ones
Electric is far more controllable at crawling speeds, where as petrol/nitro are pretty much aimed at hi speed racing. Plus, electric is much quieter and when u r crawling at snails pace, i doubt u would want to listen to a rattle of the nitro engine.
Here are a couple of mine anyway
This is what it originally looked like

heres my favorite toyota rock crawler, metal diffs, 3 speed high low 2 and 4x4 range gearbox, metal leafs springs, solid metal chassie. dam near real truck and matching price to get your hands on one of these too! If your a collector of vintage Tamiya rc you will know that this is the most sort after most collectable Tamiya rc truck ever made. THE BRUISER. built in the 1980's you might remeber these as a kid. new in box if you can find one $2500 + and second hand like mine expect to pay around $1500. as said you can by a real one for this price!

Hi where did you get those micky thompsen tyres and rims?? id love a set for my f350 high lift thanks..
ice_spy
17-04-2007, 04:17 PM
The MT's rims & baja claws tires are from the Nylint rc rock crawler, 1/18th scale also make much bigger tires/rims in a nylint 1/6 scale. I want to get some of the bigger ones for my Hummer. They came from the U.S. they are a cheap rc toy in thier Walmart stores. Not bad looking scale rockcrawling buggy and jeep, however cheap because they brake easy. similar to our Nikko or Tandy rc cars. Look on Ebay, thats where i got mine. Dont they sell everything on Ebay???:) . I dont know what you cant buy from that place, or sell for that matter!. I custom made my rims to suit the tamiya hex pattern, im sure the Ftruck uses the same hex. Man i would like some of those new BF krawler tires on the highlift! for my bruiser, keep it in a better scale looking truck rather than the original scale 22inch rims! The highlifts tires are scale BF's latest tire with good reviews, but very expensive for the real ones.

can you just put any suspension into the rc cars or not?
ice_spy
17-04-2007, 08:14 PM
Mostly yes, depending on your handy skills, i use whatever i can find. for example i used stainless steel towl racks as my 4 links, and got a peice of scrap 4mm alloy from the metal recyclers. The shocks you buy from hobby shops or better :- Ebay. The Bruiser with metal leafs well you can just about do any mod to this set up like a real truck eg. spring lift blocks, dual shocks, raised springs (items sold on ebay) , flip the spring U bolts, buy drop down reduction hubs!.some have made 4 link set ups easy for this truck too. The pajero i dropped the front suspension like a real IFS truck, inverted the rear coilover shocks, put light weight shock oil in with 3 hole pistons. it can go on and on. I race 1/10th touring cars aswell and you can tune these things beyond practicle, like sway bars, tire compound and inserts,camber/ caster/ roll centre, wheel track, chassie flex, shock position, locked diffs, ball LSD diffs or open center, etc etc etc! . A lot of Tamiya parts are interchangable and you can always buy HOP-UPS like better cvd's, ball bearings, adjustable links, alloy low friction dampers (shocks), carbon fibre chassies, alloy suspension blocks. Its like building and tuning a race car for an F1 team!! then you got to drive it like you stole it to win! comes down to 100dreds of a second over the finish line after a 5-6min heat. Gets my heart pumping anyway:) . You end up with enough little ball cups, nuts n bolts etc to end up building something like my Hummer rock crawler. basicly what ever you can imagine you can built it with these things. suspension or whole vehicle set ups, change bodys, wheels, what ever you wish.;)

Those tanks aint no rock crawlers, but they look totally awesome!!! from a distance your mind would be playing tricks on ya!
Here's a new one i built with a Tamiya TL-T1 chassie, Added my son's cheap jeep body with a few scale mods, made custom longer links (diff arms) and revised the canti lever shock set up. It really needs larger profile tyres but as diffs scrape out with this stock wheel set up.

Awesome RC's people!
i LOVE other peoples RC cars. They are always more fun than owning one yourself. LOL!
The worst thing I ever did was to buy a nitro circuit racer years ago. Its a total pain in the arse, costs heaps to run and every time I drive it it breaks something and takes hours to clean all the nitro fuel and dirt off it.
I wish I had baught an electric 4wd rc like one of these crawlers. They look like way more fun value and more useable than a "track only" raceing nitro car.

Most are based of a Tamiya Clod Buster with a modified chassis and frame..

Nice work mudrat.
Dansv8, wow a mountineer!! these are even more rare than the bruiser. But obvisously they have to be in original condition to hold any great value. How mush did you pick it up for at the second hand shop if you dont mind me asking.

Mudrat, seeing how you are mech minded, you can always strip down the car, use the diffs and custom make your own links and chassie to attain near 90` flex. the wheely king looks as though it has strong drive shafts, good gear box and diffs.
A high torque servo for stering is a must (check ebay) and you"ll need a 3 channel transmitter, pref one with a switch for 3rd channel that you can just flick L or R for the rear steer.
They are great fun, pushing them to max angles resulting in rollovers or very hard recoverys, that dont result in real life rightoffs..
Also grab a 55 turn lathe motor from team integy. heaps of torque, maxing out @ about 5500rpms.

Deffinatly the axial ax10 is great bang for your buck i got mine from a store in loganholme (brisbane) ready to run and battery and charger for just under $500. and then i have got a high torque stering servo and soft springs and i have trimmed the body to get better flex with out it fowling on the tyres. I hae put the front locker in and the 14 tooth pinion gear in and it is a lot of fun. I drove one wheel up my entertainment unit and measured it it was at about 22cm not bad flex.
