What are some of the best value for money tents that have been tried and tested by forum users? I know most of us have swags but what about tents for travelling with the family? Waterproof and space and ease of set up and pack up are some things that would be good to be shared on here.
Dome Vs canvas ect
any thoughts cheers

We have a Black wolf Turbo 300 and think it is awesome.
I have used dome tents and traditional tents before and find this one a thousand times better. although you do pay for it.

It takes about 5 minutes tops to set up complete with deluxe fly and I reckon it would last a cyclone. have been in some pretty strong winds up at double Island pt where a dome tent folded in half and ours stayed solid.

drawbacks price
bulky tent bag is pretty big and heavy then you add fly bag
awning on deluxe fly likes to store water have solved this by putting a tarp over the top of the whole shebang.

nice tent that sleeps the 3 of us with heaps of room (have queen sized bed plus maxi stretcher for my little girl.)

I recently bought a black wolf turbo 240 for our around oz trip, after researching tents. I set it up in the back yard and it seems perfect for me and my wife, but I haven't really used it yet. I should have good thoughts about it in a few months after it gets some use.

I've heard the oztrail domes are good value for money and good tents.

Depends on the trip destination & for how long which decides for me to take our swags or tents , so since this topic is tents i have been using a Southern Cross Touring Tent [canvas] for a number of years & ok they are a bit of dollars but i don't mind paying a bit for quality that'll last for a longer time -i can recommend that brand as well as Freedom Tents [they used to be made in Oz' but think it's NZ now] . Some of the other guys in our group use other cheaper brands of the 'Touring Tent' style but what i don't like about theirs is the bit of canvas from the bottom to the front door zipper is not high enough -even when pegged out rather tight , with my Southern Cross it's at least 10cms off the ground - good for keeping ants at bay a bit & rain as well , never used a dome tent for years now .
One disadvantage of my tent is that they pack up into a package that is 1M by 1M & 15cm high so they really need to be put on the roof rack - but that depends on your style of gear/set-up , also know someone who has a Oz'Tent & he loves it ! .
I can actually set my tent up [only pegged for a overnighter] in the same time or a bit less than my swag .

cheers Paul100

I have a double swag when alone, but I have a 15'x12' canvas OZ trail tent that I got for a steal. It is HUGE but time consuming for 2 people to put up (about 2 beers) but worth it. I only use this tent when going on family trips for a week or more.
I am going to buy a Tourer 9 or 10 OZ trail tent for shorter family trips.

The thing I don't like about the oztrail is that they pack in a very long bag.

Bought an Oztent when they first hit the market some years ago and have excellent service out of it. The only disadvantage is its length when folded up but we put it on the roofrack, so not really a problem for us. We also bought one of those Oztent dome tents a couple of years ago - great idea but we had trouble with the fibreglass rods breaking - they replaced it under warranty and so far so good although it's only been used a couple of times.

I have a Freedom - pyramid style tent with Centre pole, 3+ mtrs by 2+ mtrs - takes less than 5 minutes to put up. Can fit double mattress on one side of pole if neecessary or singles on either side, and still have room for clothes etc. Can get side frames if preferred but takes longer to erect. When stopping for more than one or two nights, a tarp fits on the centre pole and across the front gives a great 'Veranda'. In windy conditions, loosen the spring type pole and allow the tent to sway and it will withstand almost anything. It is now 5+ year old and still looks like new. Folds up flat into its own bag and slides into a specific built shelf in back of Patrol. With practise can get it packed up in about 10 minutes.

I have a Southern Cross Tourer 9"x12"(I think) and for 2 of us its great with heaps of room for stuff and to stand up (I am 6"1). They are simple to set up and can be done by 1 person in about 4 minutes max!. They do cost a bit to start but will last a long time if cared for correctly

I have gone through a number of tents over the years. the best one to date would be the one i currently have. its a 4 person tent but fits 3 adults with no problems, would be squashy for 4 adults though.

it is a Colman 4 Person tent with front canopy. it is weather rated for 500mm of rain (dont ask how they rate stuff like that, I dont even think its possible to get 500mm of rain) its also been fire rated.

I have taken it out both in winter and in summer and has gone well. Coldest would of been near Mt bulla in them middle of winter. didn't rain that night but extremely cold would say about -2 or so. we woke up in the morning and the inside of the tent had ice on it. the outside was all frosted there was 3 of us in the tent that night, didn't really start to feel the cold to early hours of the morning.

in summer it keeps most of the heat out but you will probably die if it's a 40c day outside and your in the tent. come to think about it, it doesn't sound that good. but its lasted a lot longer than the other ones i previously owned. cost around $200

we brought a oz trail touring tent for our trip to the cape, think it cost about $300 with the extra poles so you don't have a centre pole. we got the one with the extra extension on the back to fit our daughter in easily. not a bad tent for the price, but it is heavy and dosen't exactly pack up small, about 800mm x 800mm in size roughly. mainly purchased it for that one trip, so i couldn't justify spending the big dollars on a oztent or the like, they were all over $1000.

we sell a lot of BCF brand tents at bcf ( well derrr ), 1 year warranty,
but on the other hand i regard the coleman tents a bit overated, for price and quality. You really cant cant go past the oz trail/blackwolf tents. Was reading some stats at work the other day about black wolf, and worldwide, they sell more tents worth $2000 ( yep $2000 ) or more than under !!!!!!!

My mate bought a 4 person coleman the same time i bought my oztrail 4 person. It always splits a pole or rips or something always happens to it on a trip. No problems with mine as yet and it's had more use over the years! It was cheaper too! Nothing wrong with oztrail stuff as we've just bought an 8 person oztrail now we have a little one, and the 4 person tent is kept for trips on my own etc.

Black Wolf Turbo all the way!

Quick to set up, well built, never leaked a drop and stupid-sturdy even in howling winds. Wouldn't even consider anything else now...

I bought the Compact model and the sales man at Aussie Disposals told me they all have alloy feet and knuckles. Got it home a few days later and it had resin components! Grrr... Apparently only the bigger models have alloy parts and the Compact has poly-resin (read: plastic). Anyway, I kicked up a stink and Aussie Disposals got their Black Wolf rep to come down and replace them all with alloy parts - and didn't charge me a bean! So, effectively I now have a 'custom tent' and am as happy as a pig in the proverbial.

While I normally only bush camp, my wife and I had to camp in a public camp site (long story) a few weeks ago and an almighty storm kicked off in the middle of the night. Most tents around us had literally collapsed or were about to. Most of the ones still standing looked like wind-socks... Ours didn't as much as shimmy or wobble - it was as if it was made of bricks!

They also pack small enough to go in the back of your fourby - no need to put it on the roof, where it would be subjected to the elements. The inner's up in less than a minute, with the fly going up in another two or so minutes. Genius.

Go get one now! :-)

I use a 4 man Coleman dome tent when it's me and the two boys, takes abotu 5 mins to put up and down and packs away real easy into two bags, could never get it into the one bag supplied. Alos got a 9 man three room tent for family holidays, again a Coleman. Takes 10-15 mins but it is huge, must admit it doesn't get used much since I bought the camper trailer.

you are close, the 500mm rating is for the grade of material 500mm around the sides, same as the floor

Used to run a Freedom Family Tourer, the 'new' version, that we bought for about $900 new back in 1986. I think it was 13 or 14 feet long and about 11 or 12 wide, just not quite square, and standing room almost all thru; centre pole and 'U' shaped frame for extended rear, large rear window and lots of opening screened windows; plenty of ventilation and a great tent in the wind & rain too. Worked well with the 4 kids (+ the odd kids' friend) plus the wife & I; always use a large sheet of shadecloth under it as a ground sheet, keeps pointy things away from the base and lets the water out. We spent a lot of time in it, probably years if you add up all the days, a couple of months each year I'd guess. Travelled over 300,000 km easy, largely in 500-600 km days. A true 6 person tent; took about 5 mins to set up, and a little more to put away. I do remember one very cold night near Blue Waterholes where every other tent got flattened by the 10 plus cm of snow overnight and a howling gale where we ended up with 14 adults inside - all good friends tho! (almost had a couple of kangaroos too, but they were wet already, we left them under the tarp outside!) We got cold on -10 nights and hot on 45 plus days, but I think it did well considering. It was a fairly easy thing to fold and pack into a 1m squ about 15 cm high, but it weighed a little bit much for my wife to handle alone, so after 12 years and needing to replace only 1 zipper, when I first got crook and had to 'retire' from full time work, we sold it and bought a smaller version!

The guy who bought it carefully looked at the competition before checking out the latest and greatest 'new' Freedom versions that cost around $1500 and then willingly paid $900 for ours. He is still convinced he got a good deal, and so are all his mates! He's been running it now for 9ish years, wife & 2 kids, couple of months touring each year, yet it still looks like new. He's been offered more for it than he paid, but he knows when he's on a good thing. I had a call from a fella just the other day who saw it back when it was ours and he was asking if we'd be interested in selling, about 12 years after he saw it last.

Our replacement in about 1998 was a smaller Freedom Wagon Tourer, and it's almost as good as the older version, just a little less robust in the materials department, but it's standing up well. Wife can handle it alone when she needs to, and I can throw it on the roof (usually) but it's still about a 1m x 1m x 15 cm package, just weighs a fair bit less than the bigger version. It has a 'sock' that will fit over the rear of the vehicle if you want, or it serves as a 'verandah' with the car a bit further off. It's stood up to a few Simpson Desert sand storms, and some winds that others swear were 70 knots. I'm not sure if they were that strong, but the winds were strong enough to flatten every other tent with us, Black Wolf, dome tents, and Oz tents included! The finer sand did get in during that sand storm, but the verandah almost filled with drift. Same year everyone else got flooded out of their swags on the Claypan end of the Hay River, but the Tourer not only kept all the rain out, but it kept everyone dry until morning after they all moved in. Lucky I had family along or I would've been in the swag too! (and I guess I would've got wet as well!) We still get cold on the -10 nights and hot on the 45 plus degree days, but others swear our tent is the most comfortable place to be if you are tenting!

Can't say enough good things about them but they are expensive. Although, when you look at how long they last with a bit of care, it works out pretty cheaply after all - about $75 each year for the old one and we made most of the money back in the end; 1 zipper repair down. The latest is still going strong at 9 years, and it still looks good, altho there are more signs of wear than we ever saw on the Family Tourer. Little bits of scuff on the floor and wear areas mainly. No zipper problems tho! But when I travel without the family, it's the Candy Canvas swag for me!!

Best ones i had for ages were 2 Jackaroo ones from K-Mart... got them on the throw out bin just after easter. One had a broken pole, so fixed it myself, and the second was missing an awning pole. Anyway $35 each for a 4 man tent, and they lasted YEARS!... only threw the last one out last year after it finally wore out.

Bought an Oztrail Odessy... awesome tent, but got too big for 2 people, then bought an Oztrail 4 thing... cheapy, and didn't it show. Did 1 trip to DI, second time i put it up a pole broke and sent a sharp end through the fly. It now gets used only on FINE weekends where i know i won't need the fly.

Also bought a cheep dunger from Tentworld or something... it was $160 for a 6 man, did one trip to Fraser in a bit of rain, not heavy but lots of it, and just filled with water. Took it home, put it up to clean and never used it since.

I also have an Ultima swag that i bought 2 years ago at the Caravan & Camping show... it is AWESOME! This thing goes everywhere i do... BUT the matress got attacked by a cheeky Golden Retriever while airing out, so its been replaced. I either need to stop eating maccas, buy a bigger swag, or both cos its just a bit cosy...

I sell tents at work, Mainly Oztrail.

I have the Oz Trail Domain, and it is brilliant! I (being a female) can put it up on my own! what a feat!

have had a bit to do with the coleman tents, but it is waaaay to hard to get parts, and im a supplier!

I like the "No worries" attitude that comes with the oztrail tents. Parts are easy to get, the Company is great to deal with, and they are a good price!

But then again, i dont like their swags, the cavas smells weird and gives me headaches, and are difficult to set up. Its Burke & Wills all the way for me

I bought a cheapy from Big W about 3 or 4 years ago. I think it was about $180. It is an 8 man. It take probably 10 minutes to put up, packs up pretty small and to date hasn't broken on me. Took a little while to figure out how to set it up quickly cause it looks a bit wonky but once I worked it out it's quick and easy and well worth the money.

I looked for ages to replace our old domes which have been good except in very windy conditions. I love the oztents but struggled with the price (no problems with the value for money, but they cost more than I had in mind), looked at the blackwolf turbo tents and thought they were good but appear a bit light in strength (really just my opinion) and eventually settled on an Oztrail 9 tourer. I got the Oztrail form BCF for $250 and paid another $30 for a side pole kit wich replaces the standard centre pole and gives better usable space inside. I am going to leave the inside poles in place when travelling and remove them when storing the tent. This way it is very quick to set up and take down. It packs up larger with the inside poles in place but still fits in its bag and I'll store it on the roof rack or on top of the camper. It hasn't had any serious use yet so can't tell you that it is tough as nails, but it will get a real work out these school holidays. It looks strong, seems to be well made and appears great value for money. Hopefully it will live up to expectations.

Whatever you decide on DO NOT buy a Geodesic Dome Tent.....My god! a mate of mine has one and every time he puts it up it takes about 45mins and creates a whole new level of stress for all those involved.

Mine is a Trailmaster had it 14 yrs. We can put it up, put in the mattress, 2 pillows and sleeping bag in 3 minutes flat. It is similar in style to the Southern Cross but not as good quality. If it ever gives up I'll get a Southern Cross.:)

We just bought a "Cheap" 6 man dome tent during the week for $69 t a sale. We bought it becuase its compact and wil fit into the patrol without any dramas (room wise). It's for when we dont take the camper trailer away and for places that the camper wont be towed ect. I'll be using it in the next few weeks so I'll let you know how the "cheap" dome works out.

For us the "Howling Moon" roof top tent has been awsome!! We did the Simpson in it and it was a dream to set up and pack up.

Great to fold out and have all your bedding ready to go, we put an egg shell mattress in for added confort!

No complaints :waycool:

I laugh at people who say "now that they know how to put it up quickly, it's up in 10 mins". My COI touring tent only takes 5 stress free mins. Unfold, 4 pegs, walk centre pole in thru door and it's done. No need to rush. Not 10 mins going flat out. It is funny to watch though.

Well a quick update, I used my $69 dome and it worked a treat had a pretty heavy dew at Sheepyard flat, and again at Mitchells Flat. It didnt seem to have any probs. Although haven't used it in the rain yet.. It fold up rather easily but gee they always make the bag to small!!!

For all of you living in the tropics or thinking of spending a lot of time up here, stay away from coleman tents. The humidity affects the waterproof agent when packed away and they WILL leak like a bloody sieve! Also nylon tents with a fly will not breath proply and you get condensation inside the fly in the dry season, stick with a canvas tent, in my experience. Now running Oz Trail tourer 9 with no probs to date, the floor in them is a bit light on, just nylon floor not rubberised but we lay a ground sheet first, other than that to date totally waterproof and sturdy in a strong wind if pegged out. If just doing an overnighter don't bother with all the pegs, not a problem.
Cheers

I use an MSR (mountain safety research) 1 man hubba. About to get a swag but Ill wait till after summer. This thing is great. It weighs about 1.3 kg and can be set up so its just mesh (great for warm nights), just the outer (good beach/sun shelter) or both (general use, raining). Cost a fortune though (approx $550) but these guys make summit style tents that are wind rated to 171 kmph!
