Quickie: Are exhaust jacks any good?
I can buy a second hand 3T one for $100. Just wondering.
Thanks

I personally dont have one of my own, but have seen a mate use one on the beach to get out of some soft sand.
I think they have there uses,

They are excellent, especially in sand recoveries.
If you are booked in for Driver Awareness with Wayne & Norm, they will touch on the use of Exhaust Jacks.

I have one and I've only ever tried using it once - I gave up after that..
I was buried to the diffs in mud and water, and couldn't get it to stay under the truck whilst I filled it up.. With a lot of digging under the truck, and someone else there to help, it might have worked a lot better.. In that scenario, a hi-lift would have made light work of it.. A snatch from a tractor was also a much quicker option ;D
It'd probably work well in sand though..

So does a long handled shovel....Safer & cheaper too....

A mate of mine bought a second hand one and we used it to jack up my kandcruiser. One the second attempt it blew up. Until then I was a fan. Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. BT, I just did the Basic Awareness Course and Wayne did briefly cover them.
Still thinking of getting one.
BTW: The course was excellent and great fun too. The Pathfinder stood up to all that was thrown at it and matched the usual Pajeros and Cruisers bump for bump. I'm a very happy Pathy owner!! ;D ;D ;D

Good Stuff Strider.
I told u that the Pathy was a capable truck.
Now u have done that, you are ready for some trips.
I have one coming up in September if you are interested, I haven't finalized the dates as yet & I have to do a reckie in a few weeks, but it will be similar to the recent trip to Terrible Billy a few months ago, with a few new tracks thrown in.

Thanks baby_troupe. I thought it would be but you never know until you give a nudge!!
Definitely looking out now for a trip to try the skills on. Any trip I am looking at though needs to be around C Class - similar to the quarry type stuff.
If this suits your tracks - then I'll stick my hand up, provided of course I can get away from work!!
If you would like some company for the reckie and you think the Pathy can handle the tracks - drop us a line if you like and maybe we can organise something. If not, no drama I can go on the actual outing.
Cheers

I've been given one as a prezzie - but can't see myself using it (its too bloody big to fit in the TJ for a start! And there ain't much sand in Mexico.

Exhaust jacks are great things when the sand is too soft or the rocks are too round. Used one once that a passer by had. Lucky, because we were having soo much trouble with the high lift, it was full of sand. They have there uses, but very limited.

Uses??
They get too hot to use as a pillow :-X
BTW what's the maximum height they go too? I don't think it would be able to lift the wheels of most modded rigs.....

I have emailed you the details on the trip.
I think I should be OK for the Reckie, thanks for the offer.
