I want to get a gps for navigational based comps. Is the Magellan eXplorist XL a good one for what i need? What other ones are there to suit my need?

I haven't got an eXplorist as my old Meridien does what i need but if I had some spare cash I'd buy one. From what i have seen and read they are a great product, nice big screen and the topo maps are very good.
make sure it has serial out or some way to hook it up to a laptop......
cheers

I'm about to get an explorist XL. I don't think anything else comes near it. I going to get the Magellan Explorist XL GPS Topo Pack
http://www.prestigecom.net.au/default.asp?category=GPS+Handheld+Navigation&subcat=Magellan
I think I'll print out that link and take it to the local BCF store to se if they match the price of the that pack ($1159.00).

You can buy the eXplorist with DAST topo maps as part of the kit sporadic mentioned earlier. I have a much older, non topo version, and there are tracks on there that I haven't found on other maps. the never version should be excellent IMO.

No. That is why Discover Aus released the Topo version of their software. The older software is streets and tracks only. If your looking at a Magellan Explorist 400, 500, 600 or XL they will all accept the DAST Topo. Models lower than the 400 have no PC connectability.
THe Explorist XL has a larger screen that the 500 or 600 but has a lower resolution (less dots per inch) so the screen may be just a bit larger than the 500 or 600 not twice the size as some sales people will try to tell you. The XL is really too large and heavy if you want to use it for bush walking. The XL is ideal for dash mounting as the larger screen and lower resolution make it ideal for that use.
Also note that the XL uses 4 AA batteries and is not rechargeable. The 400, 500 & 600 have a rechargable battery. All can use an external power source via a special Y cable but need to have an additional power supply unit that plugs into the Y cable.
Hope this helps you a bit.
