Well what are they?

Things I love whilst out in the bush:

- LED head torch - really bright and great for freeing up your hands
- Gerber multitool - similar to a leatherman
- 60 LED worklight - cordless or corded - $30 off ebay - bargain!
- my swag - ohh so comfy and warm to climb into after a long day
- foldable shovel :D

Cheers,
Jon

i'm still building my gear up so at the moment my fave bit would have to be my swag.

next week i will be getting a led head torch thing hopefully so that might be my new fave lol and would also like to get a knife or multi tool but dont want to pay $200 for a leatherman lol

It would have to be my head lamp. I bought it a few years ago from BigW and it has never failed (except the batteries) its great, 2 hans free, one for the beer and the other for the fishing rod.

Where do you get gerber from? just the usual camping/outdoor type shop or is it more of a tool shop thing?

The double swag has been a God send when out on 4wd trips without the family, but the Waeco is very hard to beat especially when it is 110L. I can have as much food & drink as I want !!
The other great piece of camping equipment would be the butane Gasmate, simple, easy to pack & very convenient. ;)

How big is this unit. Says on the web page that it is a 9kg gas bottle - looks bigger in the photo. Is the bottle laying on its side?

Is there a hole in the top where you sit the barbie plate, camp oven etc.

Thanks Jimmy

I've got it packed in its carry bag (looks like one of those green shopping bags you get at the supermarket only a bit wider) and the dimensions are:

about 39cm high x 38 cm long x 33cm wide. These dimensions are in the packed state with the legs and flue packed inside. The hole in the top is 20cm diameter, and the small BBQ plate it comes with is about 27cm across. The bloke who makes them put on a demo at the show - the unit comes with a fire poker thingie that you can use to lift the plate or just pivot it to the side so you can stir fry with a wok or cook over coals with a grill plate (not included).

After reading the Hot water thread in the campfire section, I'm thinking of wrapping the flue in a copper spiral to use as a heat exchanger

Cheers, Marc.

My favourite camping item is an old yellow handled, six inch blade screwdriver ex PMG Dept. (Telecom, Telstra). Ripped the bottom out of two tyres on the Cordillo Downs road. Went to put a tube in the least damaged one and found we had left the tyre levers and bead breaker in the shed at home. My mate managed to put the tube in using only the above mentioned screwdriver.

Used it over easter when camped by the Murray. I used wood that I could break by hand (or foot), so yeah, I was feeding it every 20 to 30 mins or so, with some decent hardwood this would be less of a problem. Found a small log one night, wacked it in and still had coals to relight it in the morning. Wood needs to be about 25cm's or shorter. Next time I go, I'll be cutting some hardwood logs into 25cm lengths, then using a splitter to split them to a useable size.

It provided enough heat for a family of four to sit around and warm their tootsies - and a good cooking surface. I hate doing any stew type dishes on a gas or dual fuel stove, it just eats fuel, but with the pig going I just put the pot on top of the BBQ plate and simmer away. Save my fuel for the short cooking tasks.

Just starting to get cool enough here to consider using it on my back patio. The neighbour who also bought one is going to use it in his shed when it's not out camping with him (easy to adapt as I think the chimney is 3 inch exhaust pipe - he's going to get the local muffler place to bend him up a length to suit the shed.

Fav camping gear?

Stubby holders (on the gear stick and transfer stick of course!)
Rifles (not used at the same time as stubby holders of course!)
Swag - its a standard darche dome and never let me down.
My BBQ - its a direct copy of one my old man bought (called a bush bbq or something, made in melbourne). Made from scrap steel at work, with works welder on work time...

The best thing is I have my cruiser kitted out with everything I need. I just throw the swag on the back, the rifles in the lockup box and some food in the esky and away I go. It works for everywhere from the vic high country (home) to the Simpson.

Just bought 1:D .
Set it up at home, removed the hotplate & piled the logs in. If u stack them in this way u can get a nice little roarer happening :thumb: .

When they burn down u will have plenty of coals 4 cookin. Then just load it up again. I find that if u really want 2 get it roarin u need 2 load it from the top with longer logs & keep the front door open 4 max air flow. Its also great at conserving wood , shut the door & put the plate back on,fantatic if firewood is limited.
Cheers Dean.

This is tough question...Waeco fridges x 2 (The better half won a waeco..thank you 4WD Monthly) with beer in them... The leatherman (The missus bought for me in 97) And of recent times the Chainsaw....Now firewood chopping is much easier....
there really is too much....I think a wife who cooks killer camp oven meals...
