HelloNasty
Nice pics the deo looking good with the new rims and boots.:thumb: Looking forward to seeing the action pics.
I tried the 285s on the standard rims the other day and as you suggested they did hit the sway bar on full lock. Researching Sudso suggestion of the off set. There is not much to choose from over here in the west.
What size tyres and rims did you end up with?
Regards

The tyres I had were 33x10.5x15 BFG mud terrains and the rims were 7" but stuck out about an in further than the normal Sunraysia or ROH sunraysia type rims that I had on before.
285's are very close to 33"

Thanks for the feedback.
Rims are 15x7s tyres are 32x10.5x15 about (805mm diameter) just fit !! Had slight rubbing on back of the front mudguard but sorted that easy. No dramas with hitting sway bar etc still a bit of room left. tyres hang out of the guards about 1.5cm but its all good, they are only weekend tyres/wheels anyway.

Hi
I am hoping someone may have had this same problem and know/how to fix it.
Over the last 12months every time the car is used stop/start for a few hours out of the blue the engine will not turn over. You turn the key and its like the immobiliser is on, nothing happens just the lights are on the dash. Usually you just take out the key insert it again and away we go. About 4 weeks ago it did it and this time it would not start at all, back to holden said ecu gone $2000 later car going again. About 2 weeks ago it did it again and then the check engine light on, back to holden ..... ecu needed reprogramming, off you go again, then last week same thing again, key out, back in restart and away we go.
Holden has repalced a few relays over the last 12 months but seems the problem still exists.
Has anyone have any ideas? The problem has stopped me using the car in remote areas.
it a 2001 3.2 auto just clicked over 100000

Frontman,
A mate had the same thing with his car (ford falcon EL). He described it to me the exact way you did. "Like the emobiliser was coming on", Lights on dash but no ignition.
Had it looked at a few times by ford and they never really fixed it but cost him a bit of cash. I had a little play with it and worked out it had something to do with the car not registering it was in park, it was like the car still had it registered in drive but the shifter was in park (will not start whilst in drive). Next time it happens play with the gear shifter put it in drive then swiftly into park then turn the key works everytime.
He never bothered to get it fixed because this worked so well.

try holding key in start postion while you move gear selector thru a few gears. hold ur foot on the brake incase it starts in a gear that move the car.

Does it still "click" when you turn the key onto start?
Mine does this on the odd occasion (99 3.2 manual trans.)
When it first started doing it I thought it was the starter motor as the battery was fine, so I bought a new starter and put it in.
The problem went away for a while but after a few more outings involving water and mud it started doing it again.
I believe it's dirty contacts in the starter motor or a faulty ignition switch.
Geez if I spent 2k to get an electrical problem fixed and it still exists I would be "slighty" annoyed at the service provider.

Thanks for your advice
Absolutely nothing happens when it plays up, no whirling no clicking, I have tried the gearshift etc
I must admit this it the worst 4b I have ever owned. I purchased with 42000 k on clock from large holden dealership, holden certified warranty etc.
I dont think 4 months has passed by since I have owned it that it hasnt been back to holden. At 80000 the auto went (funily hours after an auto service) holden offerred $1200 towards a $4700 box. To the dealers credit (after gentle persuasion from the other half) we came to an agreement. 3 days after the new auto was installed.... boom, new one installed, less than 2 weeks later... kaboom again, 3rd time lucky as they say.
I lost count how many times the check engine light has been on and how many times it has been towed to holden.
great car but I think I will only drive it on bitumen............................

Hey guys,
I heard about an upgrade for the 3.5v6 RA motor, costing about $150, where you get about 40% more ponies - just a tuning issue... Has anyone else heard of this, and if so where can it be done?
Just fitted OME kit to the 2004 dual cab LT... Shocks, springs, t/bars, greasable shackles, the works. Just over 2" all round, can't wait to get mud amongst it. And what a ride. Should have done it on day 1!!
The 245/75 Micket T ATZ's look a bit lost though...
Keep up the positive vibes on the Isuzus -- they can hold their own amongst the so called "proper" 4wd's... I run advanced 4wd training courses in Tassie and have seen plenty of smaller fourbys put big, highly accessorised trucks to shame. Not going past them, but staying with them is embarrassment enough sometimes.

Looking to buy my Grandfather old 95 Rodeo currently. Not my pick if I was to go out looking for a fourby but it's $5000 or so and only has 70,000kms. Not bad I reckon. Anyone done a cab lift on a single cab? What's involved? Is it a complicated process (remembering my best mate is an engineer by trade so should be able to machine lift blocks etc up for me)?

The photos of the mounts on the car were crap, these are some pics when they were machined up. The raised step is the bottom, it receives the lower half of the rubber cab mount. The machined instep receives the upper half of the cab mount. I made up some new tubes to go down the middle to take the bolts that were upgraded to 12mm 8.8ht's.

Hi everybody, I own a 99 3.0ltr turbo diesel Jackaroo and Im having starting problems first thing in the morning or when the vehical has been left standing for a day and the motors cold. I've just bought a stronger battery with 760cca's, helps a little but still having starting trouble. A bit of blueish smoke comes out, but when warm no problems. I was wondering if it could be the starter coils or the injectors on the way out. does anybody have an idea what might be going on, I'm sure its fuel system related, but not exactly positive what it is.
Any info would be great Pigfitter

Im a member of the jackaroo club of vic and much has been said about running the correct engine oil in this motor.
They run a caterpillar fuel injection system that uses oil pressure to get things moving. Running the wrong ( too thick ) oil causes the injection to not work properly. especially when the car is cold.
Cheers,
Dale

Hey Andrew.
Is running Enforcer rear spring packs with Calmini shackles.
Front is a ball joint flip and spacer setup.
Torsions bars are OME.
Shocks were calmini ones until they died a couple of months ago( one front and one back :( ) and am now running the standard ones again until i work out what is next. Thinking about a set of Rancho's. A mate of mine lived up in weipa and said they run lots of them there and they cope with a good pounding.
When i can come up with the money am thinking about some calmini A arms and a diff drop. Have done some research on web and looks to not be too hard a job. cut the original brackets up, welding a section in to space the diff mount down. aint google wonderful.
No body lift, only running 31 inch tyres.
Might just have to get the tax return done :)
Cheers,
Dale

Hi Isuzu freaks!
I've just got back froma fantastic 12 day trip around Robe, Flinders Ranges and Mildura in the family 95 Jackyroo. Went perfectly!
It was good to see the family truckster going everywhere the big rigs went, and in comfort.
It was great to see that the Jacky was easily the most common 4b seen in the outback! I have never seen so many. All the other Jacky drivers are very friendly when you see them around the tracks touring, and was a buzz. I can't remember how many times other Jacky drivers said to us something similar to, "we saw you turning up that track yesterday".
I was even more impressed when the ranger at Robe closed off a track that had washed away and told us how good the Isuzu's are at tackling the sandy stuff.
Will add a few pics soon. Might even head up to Toolangi or Mt Dissapointment next weekend and bury it in mud and take a few pics.
Great thread, have read all replies. Looking forward to adding some interesting stuff in the future.
Cheers,

Gday Dale,
About your dual battery setup. What tray did you buy? And what AmpHr battery have you fit in it? Deep cycle or Cranking?
Cheers
Tim.
dalealford
12-10-2007, 08:47 PM
Hey Tim,
the tray is a Piranha one.
only takes an 8 inch battery.
Optima make a 660cca / 48ah yellow top dual purpose battery that fits in that tray. This is my cranking battery with the starter lead relocated using an isolated post to the new position. 660cca is more than enough to do the job. Battery was not cheap though at $380 although from what I have heard they last alot longer than a normal battery. I hope so :)
Doing it this way gave me the larger sized original battery position to play with for a deep cycle.
Cheers,
Dale

Jason.Yeah you get that after playing deep sloppy mud etc. Not just Rodeo's, its all rigs.
They're a bit of a prick to remove and disconnect the battery first but pay attention when you disassemble it so it goes back together the same way.
DONT use any solvents to clean anything, just water and electrical contact cleaner.
I've pulled mine out for cleaning it's not too hard a job just time consuming, you have to use a pin to hold back the brushes when you re assemble it too.
Update on my Rodeo: Just fitted an electric fan with a Davies Craig thermo switch last week because the old fan clutch is almost siezed so the fan was roaring like a hurricane and dragging power using more fuel.
Bugger giving Holden 400 bucks for a new fan clutch bloody thieves!
The fan I put in is a Siemens made OEM unit for BMW's (although it was in a Bundy I had)
It's smaller then the stock fan (only 14") but its an S blade and pulls good air for an electric fan.
I mounted it inside the factory shroud and it took a few measurements and trial and error bending and tacking to make bracketry to hold it secure and central and also allow it to be removed without having to undo anything else. The fan is bolted to the brackets and the bracketry goes around the shroud and bolted to the nose panel. Theres one lower bracket which I bolted to the bottom of the front chassis crossmember. Talk about a bloody mission but its bloody strong!
The temp gauge hasn't gone over a 1/3 yet (where it normally sits) without the fan switching on at all so I turned the thermostat down until it switched on but I turned it back up a bit so it doesn't cut in unnessecarily.
Got a long drive through long hills coming up so that should test its effectiveness out properly. I've kept the old fan in the back just in case.;)
cheers, good luck with the alternator

Yes Jason,
I have gone through 3 sets of brushes. I seem to have fixed the problem of late though.
What I did, was last time I pulled it apart to replace them (and the bearings) was cut up a coke can and siliconed it over the hole just above the rear bearing, then the rubber cap over the brush box, siliconed that up as well. Basically the idea was to stop mud and water getting into it.

hi all, new to 4wd'ing and new to the forums.
got my 91 rodeo about 3 months ago i think, and i got stuck into it pretty quickly doing a stereo install (4 speakers and a head unit) and the only advice i can give to that is dont get excited and do it on a friday night half way through a big drinking session with mates...it all works fine but doesnt look the greatest lol
after that i put a 2 inch body lift in on the cab and also the tray, and swiftly followed up with a set of 31x10.5 silverstone muddies and some driving lights up front.
taken it bush once since then and the silverstones did quite well.
now, the one problem for me is this...i like things to look impressive, and so i wanted my ute to be lifted up nice and high, but not long after i got the ute i found out IFS with a torsion bar severely inhibits the height possibilities. so, what can i do to get more height?
well, without further adu, i bring you my 1991 2.6L (i think) 4cyl petrol holden rodeo...
http://www.observedtrials.net/otn4/my-deo.jpg
edit: for the record, the front wheels dont sit that far out of the guards...the front left isnt touching the ground in this shot.
sudso
26-10-2007, 02:17 AM
Yup IFS limits not only ride height but wheel travel as well, especially on Rodeos!
If you wind the bars up too much the upper control arms will always be riding on the upper bump stops, the ride will be shit and it will flog out the upper control arm bushes rather quickly and regularly. Better off getting a front locker, a body lift and some 33's;)
Mat_P

sudso
27-10-2007, 12:57 AM
They're in Asia, Thailand I think.
They have modified control arms and different steering components to suit to get the height.
They put the rear springs on top of the axle to lift the rear 6".
I cant remember the name of the control arm kit but I doubt they would ever get passed here in Oz.
They do look sweet though dont they:waycool:
A front locker is basically a traction aid, turns your open front diff into a locked diff so power is transmitted 100% to both wheels instead of one wheel when the other spins.
There's two types: an auto locker or an air operated locker.
A limited slip diff (like in the rears) only allows about a maximum of 40% traction to the spinning wheel so a locker in the rear gives more traction too.
Welcome to the expense, and fun of wheelin :D

hmmm...well im told that a 2 inch body lift cant even be engineered here (not sure if this is true, but a mate was saying that he heard that recently) so what the hell, if i can get my hands on the lift kit from overseas i might have to do it :P
i looked into the sun kits the other day and i noticed a place that sells them that is in the philippines...and i know some people who live over here but travel there 4-6 times a year...perhaps i should ask them to price the kit up..hehehe.
i know it wont be legal, but maybe i will just keep the 4x4 as a fun-mobile and have a little "rally car" as an everyday driver.
and considering i just stopped being lazy and lodged my tax i will have a nice little boost to my bank account coming in soon. :D

I've heard you need to get longer shocks to take advantage of the balljoint flip. i've also heard it can help to correct some camber problems from jacking it up. 2" seems to be ok, 3 is where you run into problems.
Haven't seen a clmini kit for the front yet, it's on my list though. It's probably worth seeing if the balljoint flip will do away with the (expensive) calmini arms. though i think the calmini arms put the balljoint at a better angle too.
these are things i'll have to research when the time comes.

G'day.
I haven't read through all the above posts.
A few years ago, Tim Scott of the magazine had a Calmini 3" lift fitted to his red MU ute. It was a feature article with step by step instructions.
I remember the verdict was that it did give the 3" as claimed, but wheel travel wasn't much.
MU has rear leaf so the Frontera should flex a bit more with (I think) coils.

Where exactly is it leaking from?
If its from the external seal where the steering column shaft pokes out of the box the shaft must be clinically clean and dry when you install the new seal. Its a Teflon seal and will transfer some of the teflon onto the shaft.
I did mine 2 years ago and its been fine. Was running 33's for quite a while too.

G'day guys,
On the weekend I put some 2" spring spacers in the back and wound the torsion bars up by about 2". Very easy to do with 27mm socket, wd40, axle stands, jacks & a few smaller sockets. Hopefully Double Island and the top end of Fraser will be a bit easier with the extra 2" of height. Should now be high enough to avoid most problems with that silly low cross member.
Anyway, sounds like a pretty common way to do the lift and it'll cost about $120 for the spring spacers & $65 for a full front end wheel alignment to sort the castor out.
Mine is a 2003 3.5L.

hey guys,
i have a question for you all.
has anyone been game to take to the underneath of a rodeo, say 1991ish era, with an oxy torch and cut out the crappy ifs and then get all the bits and pieces required to weld in some leaf springs or even coils? oh, and still drives it on the road (legallity ignored :P ).
i know its a sh!t load of work but i want some insparation as i dont want to part with the rodeo...plus it would be a rare rodeo that way :P nice and big.
i wouldnt mind being able to run 35 inch muddies with a bit of room for them to move.
oh, and for the record, im wanting to use my welding skills for this, so no engineer...more of a project thing :)

Hi guys. I've just bought my way into the Rodeo club after being the Jeep club for the last 4 years. Got my beastie just a couple of months ago and I'm really liking it. It came with all the bits you see on it already (bargain) so my 'to do' is pretty short. It's even got a LRA tank so my range is over 1100kms!! Can't wait to get out there.
The suspension is still standard (but I wound the front back up to normal height) so that will be changed soon. EFS or OME seems to be the common consensus but I might go Bilstein shockies. The tub liner is already for sale (see this forum and eBay) so I can build a false floor storage system and a hardlid to carry a rooftop tent. Once I get on to it all I'll post a thread in the build ups section.
Any Rodeo drives happening? I'll be in for one in a few weeks time. I'm in Sydney so anywhere in the usual areas. I'm keen to try this ute out properly.

Jase dont be shy about about cutting your front guards at the back of them. I did mine back when I had some 33" muddies on and had no probs with rubbing even with no body lift. Tyres did nick the top lip of the guards on full compression though but the tyres stuck out 1.5" from the guards anyways with the offset I was using. Got some pics of the guard chop if you want to see.
Watch out for the "wings" on the back of the bar-chassis brackets too, the tyres might rub them when turning depending on rim offset.
Nice looking Rodeo too! Looks like a twin of mine when I had the muddies on.

I simply cut mine off. The 33's got too close to them for comfort.
With the guards you have to mark a crescent shape but I would just cut 30mm off all the way round if I did it again unless you have a body lift. Leave the radius on the rolled lip, it makes it easier to weld back on to the cut edge of the guard.
You have to "re-model" the inner plastic guard after too.

hey don't go the calmini, it's just an expensive way of getting what you can achieve for free
the new arms can be skipped with an upper balljoint flip and spacer, you can get new torsion bars anywhere, the calmini shocks arn't the greatest either (many people replace them asap)
EVL-080
04-09-2008, 06:29 AM
What do you recomend then? Something like an OME or Ironman 2 inch lift, extended shackles and a ball joint flip in the front? Along with a 40mm body lift?
chikoroll
04-09-2008, 08:54 PM
balljoint flip and a spacer has the same effect as the longer A-arms supplied with the calmini lifts- basicly it replaces up flex with droop flex, and allows the wheels to aligned properly after the torsion bars are jacked up
the spacer to use is either 1/4" or 1/2", the 1/4" would probably be better for your application
replace the droop bump stops with low profile bump stop also (these will be hard to source, and won't be advertised, so ask around)
for the rear, either extended shackles or replacement leaves- do some research on what other vehicles spring packs will fit (tape measure, notepad and a day at the wreckers will do)
or you could go the easier option and add-a-leaf but compromise ride quality
so in short-
balljoint flip and 1/4" spacer
low profile droop stop (droop "snubber")
rear springs- extended shackle (illegal), add-a-leaf(harsh), or replacement leaves(comfortable)

What do you recomend then? Something like an OME or Ironman 2 inch lift, extended shackles and a ball joint flip in the front? Along with a 40mm body lift?
You'll fit 33's without scrubbing with a 40mm body lift, with the right rim offset, tyres that aren't too wide (10.5" - 11'5" no more) and without a suspension lift!
The suspension will still compress the same amount at the front, (Rodeo's have bugger all front wheel travel) its the body lift or guard chop that gives the clearance through the whole suspension cycle.
Places most likely to rub when turning with the suspension compressed at the same time is the top lip of the front guards and the bottom corners of the footwell/firewall but the bodylift should prevent that even without a suspension lift.
If you do a bj flip and fit spacers I'd drop the front diff as well so your cv's arent at risk.

I already have 33x12.5 tyres so I'm definatly gunna need a lift to stop them scrubbing. Got onto a 50mm body lift kit, is that to much for the Rodeo? I was gunna go 40mm to fix hoses ect less pressure. I reckon I'll go Ironman 2 inch as well as the body lift, and just go from there..

You have the best of both worlds now. Its all still factory Isuzu and a tough Patrol front with flex.

the tyres on there at the moment are only my old 31's... just gotta save again, sux bein an apprentice haha... the diff centres are only 3:9's aswell so wanna run 4:8's when i get my 35's,ive got a mate that works at ARB newcastle and when i buy my front air locker i can get the centres put in then for nothing.

Still not real happy with my front suspension. Still really stiff and I have lost travel from standard set upGood old Devo. Got a couple of cousins who work at Smiths Foods there. Was last in Tassie in August '06 and took the Rodeo but only for 3 days. I was checking out Black Bluff from the Leven Canyon Lookout and thinkin hmmm, looks like good 4wd territory. Only real 4 wheel driving we did was up at Cradle Mt where we had to lock hubs and the snow turned to slush when it rained. Was bloody freezing too!
So what made the suspension stiffer? Did you get aftermarket torsion bars and heavy duty shocks?
If you wound the bars up too high then they'll get stiffer as the suspension compresses because they are twisting more then normal with the extra travel between the lower bump stops. Also when you do the flip you'll get about an extra inch of droop travel and you need slightly longer shocks. Otherwise they'll top out on droop and become the "bump stops" which isnt real good for shocks.
Also I forgot to mention yesterday that the body mount rubbers have to sit between the body and lift blocks otherwise the cabin will vibrate to bits.
Cheers, sudso

Do any of you v6 rodeo owners have dual batterys set up. I am keen to put them in and have the money, I just need to find a way to fit a 2nd battery somewhere. I want to run the winch off the second battery so I wan a decent one in there. My current starter battery is fine to start the bus. I chatted to a company a while back who suggested run the main starter battery in the piranna tray available and put a big battery in the stock location for a winch battery (2nd battery.) I am not real keen on this idea as it require 2 new batterys and not just one. Anyone else have any ideas. I had considered putting it in the tray, but that would require really long winch power cables and also long battery feed cables.
Cheers!

I'm interested in how you guys with 2" body lifts went condsidering Fenton LT Sport had steering issues with his 2" body lift to begin with.
Mines a V6 too and looks like a little nightmare to do a body lift as its LPG as well and there are gas line length issues from the chassis to solenoid in the engine bay. I'm only going 35mm anyway thats all it needs for 33" tyre clearance in the front. Never had any drama's with 33's at the rear.
Brake lines from chassis to engine bay look like trouble too.
02Rodeo, In the V6 you can fit 2 smaller batteries in line with each other and wired in parallel in the normal battery position with a special cradle to support the second one, although it sits slightly higher than the front one. Our local constabulary had this set up on their previous V6 paddy wagon, I repaired the second cradle once when it started cracking, it was a bit on the thin side.
They had 2 x 500cca batteries in parallel giving them 1000cca of cranking and winching grunt and to power all their usual accessories. They were both sealed maint free batteries but I dont think they had a fridge in the lock up at the back though lol.
If you also put in a 3 or 4 way master switch you could manually isolate the main from the aux when camping etc. and using Marine batteries like a Century Marine Pro which have deep cycling capability as well as normal cranking abilities. In Qld its law that only marine batteries like this are fitted to recreational boats so they have plenty of reserve communications power if their engine etc broke down.
Some guys have managed to fit a smallish battery near the passenger side firewall by relocating the egr canister and a couple of other bits n pieces but thats not possible with mine as the LPG mixer is there. Mines going in the tub, an N70 Extreme "Taxi battery" for the aux, my main is a Supercharge Gold 950cca maint free, (big mutha 330mm long and fits the factory try no probs. Got the isolator and wiring all ready to go just gotta sort out the body lift first before wiring the dbs.

Hi guys
The body lift was easy as. I did read that you had issues fenton, but had also heard of others with a 50mm lift. I attempted it and it paid off. I got a mate to check out the steering issue, and all was ok! The only issues we really had was forgetting to adjust the captivation straps near the gear box, The stupid welded bolts in the front of the tray, and also the gear stick. The transfer stick was fine, but the normal lever now has another s bend in it. It is all sweet and I couldn't be happier. My brother in law is a mechanic and he had a customer with a courier with 50mm body lift, and the steering shaft actually seperated on him, and as such he had no steering. He made me aware of this, but all seems fine. I'll get him to check it out on the weekend when we modify the bull bar. The gas may be an issue sudso but im sure you'll find a way!
What offset are your rims Fenton? Mine are of a 93 model hilux, scored the original set of a mate, and then bought new ones the same. I need flares to cover them up, but have so far got away with it. The cops aren't real switched on down here!!

hi fenton
My opinion of ironman suspension is rather high. I haven't compared them to anything else but I am quite impressed with the flex. The paint has even rubbed of the inside of my guards under the tub. This was prior to my body lift so that should have resloved those issues. My rear springs have sagged (i think) unless my front has decided to lift itself! Due to the weight of the winch and bullbar the front torsion bars are fully wound up, but having had them for 12 months they are reasonably soft now. Either that or I have gotten used to them. I was told that ironman was very stiff, but when I got them installed I was very happy with how unstiff they were! My mechanic is trying to get another set of rear springs out of ironman as they shouldn't have sagged. It never has load in it, only during summer when we go camping.
cheers

mounted my winch back up tonight with the new synthetic rope and hawse fairlead. its sweet as. just need to go mud trucking to try it out!!
do any of your have the bottom of the rim to bottom of the guard measurements for your bus. My bus is 50mm out from front to back and i want to try to work out if its because of all the saved weight of the winch cable that the front has lifted, or the rear has sagged.
with 15" rims and 4" lift my rear is 760mm and front is 810mm.
even if you only have a 2" lift or no lift (as long as you have 15s) ill take that measurement to work out what is wrong.

Will sort this out and see how I go!You need to do this, like I did to mine regardless of body lift. 33's and no rub there and............ no body lift.
Mine were only 10.5 wide though - BGF muddies and on deep dish Hurricane rims. You have to "refashion" the steel inner plate a bit too so it fits back on.
They stuck out 1" from the guards so I put some flexi flares on.
If you're getting no droop when you lift the front end your torsion bars are wound too high (or your front shocks are siezed). The upper arms must already be resting on the upper bump stops. Wind the bars back down to a 10-15mm gap in the upper bump stops. You'll get a nicer ride on and off road too.
Loosen your sway bar off too at the pins when you do it then retighten it again after.

Hey fellas
Have had a busy week with my bus this week.
Sunday: Bolted a mates 33's Mickey Thompson Baja Claws up to the front of the rodeo. Wasn't going to work due to the bull bar mount. The Bull bar mount was still at the stock height even though it was body lifted. If we went for a drive it was going to wear a nice groove down the middle of his tyre.
I measured his guards. He has an ifs hilux with a 2" body lift and his guards are still 40mm higher than my rodeo with a 4" total lift. That sucks!!
Monday: My bus was off to my mechanic for some bearings to be replaced in the front of the motor. Two of the idler pullys on the fan belt were letting me know they were not happy. Replaced the fan belt at the same time. Also while it was there we regassed the air conditioning. It works a treat now. I recommend this to anyone with a/c and a bus 02 or older. My bus had no gas left in it, but runs a treat now!
Tuesday: I fixed the rear sagging issues with some Ironman Load Rider helper springs. They seem really good so far and are adjustable depending on the load you intend to carry. Should be good for caming weekends. They were $170.
Thursday: Replaced my reverse camera with a $40 ebay job. The new camera has a wider veiwing angle and no night vision. This is actually an advantage as the other camera didn't work too well of a night due to the reverse lights stuffing up the night vision. It is awesome for hooking up trailers, you can reverse right under the hitch!!
Friday: During some after work drinks I manufactured up a dual battery system, similar to the one sudso suggested. The original battery is moved forward towards the radiator and another identical batter is placed the same direction behind it and 30mm higher. I got two battery trays of ebay and then manufactured them together. The trays cost me $60 and some time and the 2nd battery cost me $150. It is a 610 cca and 90ah combined battery so it should do me well. I plan on wiring them up with a redarc isolator, and have a constant on or off switch for when i am winching. I wonder why pirana dont make this sort of tray instead of limiting rodeo owners to an 8" battery on the passenger side firewall.
I wish every week was this productive on my bus!!

yep, if the engine has been fed the incorrect oil, it is guaranteed to be a lemon
if possible, go the 3.1T/D (92-97) slightly less power, but a much better engine

Gday all, i have been a long time reader and have never really posted much on the website.
Some really good trucks flying the flag for Isuzu/Holden on here. Top stuff!
My ute is a 03 RA Rodeo dual cab for work and play. Pics show the exterior mods. Also has a Pioneer CD Player. Uniden UHF with GME aerial, Nokia car kit with patch lead for my Treo 750 to benefit from brookmstick type aerial. Boost guage. 12v automatic triple battery setup (2x36ah in toolbox under tray). Narva driving lights. ORA freewheeling hubs. Steel Tray with Alloy tread plate on gal frame false floor for work duties. I have also just about finished making a gal canopy for the back when in holiday mode. Still have to get canvas made for it. Can put up pics if anyone is interested.
Soon to fit a 50mm poly block body lift and steel block tray lift and have a to do list just like everyone else.
I live in Fredo on the NSW Mid North Coast, and if anyone is interested to go wheelin sometime just send me a PM.

Hi all - haven't been on here for a while or over at australia4wd.com .... the 'deo's still in the garage as I have a Crewman for a work car now (not a Cross6 or Cross8 though).
Question: has anyone heard of anyone bending a TF/R9 dual cab bending the chassis at the rear around the area of the front spring hangers or the bumpstops, evidenced by the gap between the body and the tub becoming V shaped? I've seen posts on the exploroz forums about people doing this and am now a bit concerned....
I'm not sure whether I have bent the chassis or bent the tub......
Might have to get someone to measure between the tub and the chassis at a few points for me for comparison.....
Cheers

(andyr on australia4wd)Most likely the chassis is bent up at the back. Usually happens when the tow bar drops onto a ledge etc too hard and too many times with a lot of weight in the tub. Check for cracks too between the front body mounts for tub and the rear body mounts for the cabin.
The gap on mine is very even and the body mount insulators are even too.

Hi all, I have a 1995 2.8 TD rodeo single cab.
It has seen better days and I am wondering if she is worth fixing up.
The problems.
Needs new suspension all round. ($1100 ish)
Needs air con. fixed. ($700 ish)
Needs new parker light, indicators and tail lights. ($200 ish)
Needs new tyres all round. ($700 ish)
- Has been running Hankook AT's as last 2 sets of tyres. They are good value for money. Got 70,000 and nearly 80,000 K's from them.
I've looked them up on the web sites and I reckon I can only get about $5 or $6 grand for it after the improvements.
Does anyone think it's worth the work?
She does drive well though, only 8.2L/100km and is on it's 2nd clutch, 3rd alternator, 2nd steering box, 2nd injector pump, 2nd slave cylinder, 2nd master cylinder, 2nd (nearly 3rd) brake rotors.
Oh yeah, BOSCH batteries are really good. I bought the ute 5.5 yrs ago with 190K on it and chucked a Bosch in it (aussie made) and it's still there after all that time and another 210 k's:confused: .
chikoroll
10-11-2008, 08:50 PM
-might as well get a suspension lift
-wind your windows down
-been buying aftermarket alternators i see, strictly genuine or high quality only, they eat through anything else
- how neat do you want these? trailer lights make a nice and cheap alternative
- tyres are something that every vehicle goes through
do you like the vehicle and can you justify the costs of getting it running again?
are you saying it has 400,000km's on it??
scrap metal yard would pay more than anyone buying it if it is that high in the milage

10-11-2008, 09:07 PM
I've just been tossing up the same thought, I have 1996 TD dual cab and have just decided to stick with the devil I know. Mine has done 215K and probably is only worth 10K, although it has snorkel, winch, dual batteries and few other extras. The only things I have done since new is change the clutch master cylinder, new radiator core, fixed a leaky injector, re-tensioned the springs in the back and added an extra leaf, replaced the front uni joint from box to diff (now greasable), CV boot, new OME shocks and a clutch. One of the things I didn't like was the lack of power, I couldnt even keep up with 2.8 luxes. So I put an 2,5" exhaust on ($520), I noticed a bit of a difference, then I went and had the fuel pump adjusted and had it dyno'd ($130) and it went from 50odd hp to 74hp, it goes like a rocket! Next on the list is front diff lock, drop side tray, LR tank and aluminium canopy. I recon stick with yours and just fix it up, it will do another 100-200K
2007rodeo
11-11-2008, 11:02 AM
Yeah, it has 400K on it.
The alternator was rebuilt twice and completely replaced with genuine one about a year ago. That was alot of $$$, as you would all know it is an alternator and starter motor in one.
I do like the old battle axe (rodeo) but the misses might shoot me if I rock up one day with a lift kit in my Rodeo and not hers.
Stiphodon- I just saw a long range (130L) fuel fank for your exact model go on ebay for under $100, was a bargain.
I think I'll just keep it and make it so that it is aleast road worthy and run it into the ground.
The guys at Diesel Australia who rebuilt the injector pump for $800 said Rodeo's are great, and I should be able to get to about 700K without the engine giving out.

hey all, just thought id post up a few pics of my little holden frontera. It is a 1997 M7 model and has done 100K. Its a great little bus and is extremely tough considering some of the less than kind treatment it has recieved. I just replaced the alloys and highway tyres with 15X7 black sunraysias and 30 inch BFG muddies (yeehah!):truck: . took it out to play in the puddles the other day after some good rain and the new tyres lapped it up they barely slipped once in some very slippery mud. was absolutely amazed at the difference to the ht's. it went everywhere my mates 80series went and did it easier in most cases:D . anyway heres some pics (unfortunately no muddy ones as the camera died!:( )

Hi all, well my 95 Rodeo is now at 402,000k's and still going strong.
A few strange things have been happening though (oh o)
1. At about 395k she overheated and all the water was gone from the radiator (yes water not coolant). I had had leaking hose problems prior to that but replaced them at around 390k and had been checking the water daily to make sure it had been fixed. So I don't know why it lost several litres all of a sudden, or where it went. I filled her up and regular checking since, over 7,000k's has shown no water has been lost since. I guess I shouldn't question it if it works now.
2. I chucked her in 4wd the other day to get the mower off a tandem trailer on a gravel driveway and forgot to unlock the hubs on the way home. The whole way home it made this terrible noise from the front end that sounded similar to having a matchbox car tied to a string bouncing along under the front axle.
-Any idea what that would be?
It can still be heard when hubs are unlocked but is much much quieter.
Cheers, Will

G'day, toying with the idea of a buying a 2001 frontera as a beach & camping rig for my young family. Very comfy and reasonably priced.
Just wondering what others may have done to get a couple inches lift out of them as this may become a problem in the soft sand. Parts seem hard to source in aus so interested to see what people are doing. Also would probably look at slightly bigger and wider tyres for better beach driving. How much lift is needed for 30's or 31's?
Don't want anything crazy, just don't want to be bulldozing the ground everywhere i go.
Also feel free to make any comments, interested in hearing from current or previous owners on them.
Thanks
