Wife said car made funny noise today when starting so I checked it out when I got home and found the Alternator not charging.
Pulled it out and to bits and found the diode pack blown up.
I rebuilt the Alternator a couple of years ago, bearings, seals, diode pack and regulator all replaced.
Now it appears to have died again, anyone got any suggestions of causes?
Anyone no of availability of aftermarket replacements?
Price of new and/or reco and where to get one, other then local auto elecy?
Any info greatly appreciated.

I had to replace mine last year. An auto elec. mate of mine said most shops won't reco alternators now cause it's not worth it - they just bin the old one and order a new unit. He organised a new one through Ashdown for me for around $250 odd. Retail price was around $800 . I have heard that GQ alternators can be a problem........

Big tip guys - Nissan Bluebird.
GQ's run the Hitachi alt, when I blew mine it was almost impossible to get parts, or they cost a motza. Did up the diode plate and it blew again in 6 months.
Being a tightarse I looked at altering a ford or holden one but the bracket fabrication was awkward. So I kept digging and found that a Bosch alternator that fits a nissan bluebird will go onto the patrol mountings. Bonus is I now have a 80amp alt and you can get bosch parts anywhere as cheap as chips. The critical bit is the Housing to fit the patrol brackets.
Chop the old connectors and rig spade terminals. 4 years and still going strong.
