I have a Magellan Explorist 600 and discover aus streets and tracks and the Magellan Mapsend on the 'puter. Very accurate. Even shows the farm tracks on my property. I think the instructions can be better.
I got the 600 because it has area calculation (good for farming) and decent compass. also has rechargable batteries. toss up between the 600 and the larger size XL which you can't recharge the batteries. Went Magellan only because there is a magellan savvy guy in town and mates all seem to have them. Safety in numbers.
What have you all got and why?

They are pretty closley priced so features is the go. horses for courses. Go to the website for magellan and have a look. XL screen is a big plus but the 600 has features that the xl doesn't. I initally went the XL side but looked into it more and the 600 suited me more. Screen can be a little small.

Magellan Meridian Platinum with the old mapsend maps (only SA & NSW). Just can't justify the cost of buying DiscoverAus topo for nearly $400! Oziexplorer on the laptop with a bluetooth GPS dongle -excellent with Aussie raster maps. Also using a palm T3 with Tomtom 6 - again good Aussie coverage for small towns etc.

G'day fellas,
I've got a HP IPAQ with a bluetooth gps reciever. I'm running copilot and Tom Tom software for on road route navigation and Oziexplorer (with all of the topo. maps for Australia) for Off-Road. I've also connected a retractable 8" LCD screen purchased from Ebay new $110. You can also purchase a mount for PDA's if you don't want to use a large screen.
I really don't know why people buy purpose built Gps navigators like Magellan or Garmin as the IPAQ or other eqivilant PDA's are a tax write off for pretty much all occupations. And you can run all types of applications that will run on the Windows.
I also have an old knockabout laptop that I use to plan and transfer trips on and yes, I work in I.T.
P.S - always carry paper maps as a backup.
I have got a MIO 168+ which I use for street work, but i also can use it for Co-ordinates for working out where I am on a particular map... But I have been considering getting the OziExplorer software for both computer and PDA, what are ppls thoughts on this stuff seeing as it is a fair bit of cash to fork out for it not to work...

Any GPS with mapping you can claim on tax. Doesnt have to be a PDA. If it helps you navigate for your job you can claim it. The same as buying a UBD. No difference.

Can a Magellan Explorist 600 interface with a laptop so that what is displayed on the gps is on the laptop?
If you go to the Magellan Website you can download software called Mapsend Lite 2 and it interfaces with magellan units. It takes the topo information from your GPS and displays it on the screen of your laptop. It plays back bread crumb trails. You can mark waypoints on the PC and send it to GPS and also the other way around. It also has a 3D map view aswell.
Great interface and it is FREE !!!!

I bought my garmin 510 about 3 weeks ago. Works great around Sydney, only thing is that some of the directions it gives go up into dead ends! Anyway its good. BUT I've lost it for 2 weeks now as it died last Thursday. No power up on battery or plug. Has been sent to GME for repair under warranty. Not good for 3 weeks old and just driving around Sydney! And I started holidays the next day! Hope I didn't but a dud. Anyway GME are a great company and they'll either fix it or give me a new one. I like the way it works as its pretty simple like me. Price was ok at $650 too.

old trusty Garmin GPS 126 works a treat!
old Toshiba e570 PDA. With compactflash GPS receiver.
Running Tomtom 6 and Oziexplorer.
Why? Because the PDA cost me $30. Then I replaced the battery in it which was $25.
So all up cost me under $200 excluding software.

I got a old GPS unit that I bought when I used to fly light aircraft. Its a Garmin GPSCOM 190 unit, handheld with display (grey and black not the fancy coloured types). Its also got the aviation band programmed into it, I used it as an emergency transceiver should the aircraft radio have failed, or I crashed!!
I still use it cos it still works first of all, has all the usual info required (compass, track logging, speed, etc etc) AND it also doubles as a emergency communications device should we be in a remote area, have no radio contact, or no SAT phone. I can contact any aircraft flying in the area, as well as Air traffic control (from a high point in the landscape). The benefit here is that I am still legally allowed to use the radio cos my flight licence is still current. And as I said, the radio function is used purely for monitoring or EMERGENCY only. It is a great device, and with paper maps, I have never yet been "position displaced"!! Sometimes its more accurate and reliable than my mates brand new handhelds. Always a good thing :D
Heres what it look like:

Back when the handbrake bought me my magellan there wasn't too much in the way of PDA's and their software! Having said that - my mag merri-plat is much more rugged & water proof than any PDA if you happen to be walking, biking etc. Mind you - sounds like just about everyone has PDA's now.

For me, Id rather do it the old fashioned way, and use GPS as a backup or confirmation when the worst happens.
Nothing quite like dead reakoning your position, using the compass and maps, and landmarks, etc. Situational awareness is the best course, then and only then, when you start to think your getting lost, should you revert to PCs, PDAs, etc. What would happen if you had no idea where you were, but the GPS knows where u are, and it sh*ts itself? You have no idea where you are!!
Of course, these days everybody has a GPS so the chances of all units failing at the same time is remote, but u never know.....

I'm running a Dell Latitude Laptop with Oziexplorer, this is mainly for backup or when not on bad offroad tracks. This is mounted on a custom Laptop stand next to the gear shift.
For normal use, I'm using either of my HP PDA's. 4150 and 1210, both running Destinator PN for voice street mapping and Oze CE for offroad mapping. These are mounted on a suction windscreen mount that will end up in the bin as soon as I can get some time to make my own PDA mount away from the windscreen. All items run off a BT GPS receiver.

I have a Garmin GPSMap60CS with Tracks4Australia, Metroguide, and Bluecharts all installed.
It gets used regularly in the bush in my Landcruiser, motorbike, and hiking. I also use it both for sailing and fishing in my boats.
It gets rained on, waves wash over it, it sits in the sun for hours, batteries will last more than 1 day if the backlight is not on. It has never missed a beat. I would recommend one of these to anyone.
My next investment will be the T4A mapset from GPSOZ with the topographical overlay.

I too have been using a PDA for the last 2 years. Only recently been looking into a Explorist 600 because the battery life on the PDA just isn`t enough for bushwalking and long hikes. At most I get about 2.5 hours before needing recharge, but with the handheld units they claim batteries can last for 12+ hours before needing replacing.
Will keep the PDA for car use etc as its a good setup, but just need something a bit longer lasting (and waterproof) for overnight hikes and trips etc.

What sort of mount are you using for the camera?
Hi maggot4X4;
Correct answer. Pic. location was at bottom of Fraser Island (Hook Point)
The mount for the GPS & camera is an angle bracket screwed to the pillar, with an extension flat metal strip for the camera using a large thumb screw to the standard screw mount under the camera.
the GPS mount is the standard windscreen suction mount you get with the GPS combo package, with the suction cup cut off, and the stem fixed direct to the angle bracket with small U bolts!

Cool, I used a ball head and a grip mount connected to the jesus bar to mount my video camera. The added benefit of using the ball head was it had a QR plate so I can shoot other stuff without having to dismantle it all.

You quite often find they don't find every address in a street. Usually if that happens I just try adjacent numbers. Have to be careful at intersections that you dont get an address on the wrong side and it sends you the wrong way. A bit of a bummer that your place doesnt exist tho. How long has it been there. As said old map in tom tom?? but probbaly a year old at earliest in that model.

I live in country NSW and the councils and shires have just (last year) done an upgrade and renumbering of all properties with a number. Mine is 4853 (I think) which means I'm 48.53 k's from the nearest post office. However my road has a few names depending on which direction you are travelling and which town you are traveeling to..
I have got in touch with Tom tom to change a few details in regards to street/road names and to fill in gaps. I must say they are quite receptive to our input for updated maps.

Thanks Hillbilly.
I'm not sure if the datum change did anything but it made me look at the units of measurement. I changed the Latitude and longitude setting to match that in Google Earth and when I had the coordinates from home I put them in Google Earth and bang, the pin was right on my house!!!
Now I just gotta test out the laptop to see if I can get the GPS to draw where I actually am.

I will not go into all the details but if you would like to know have a look at this thread. Newhilux.net - New Hilux, 4x4, Hilux, SR5, 2005 Hilux, 2006 Hilux, 2007 Hilux, D4D, D4-D, Common Rail, Dual Cab (http://www.newhilux.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1343)
Some pic's of the unit after it was reinstalled the second time by someone who knew what he was doing.

Nice and flush fit with the dash for that factory fit.

Hi T-Rat,
Looks like a good installation... definitely has a "factory" look.
Are you happy with it functionally?
Your second photo is of OziExplorer?
How does it perform on street navigation?
From face value, this unit looks to be exactly what I'm after. Just like to know what a few users think of it.
Thanks.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP60CSx now and previously had a Magellan Explorist 600. NOTE previously until a brick left someones hand and entered my driverside window and removed it. (it was faulty and due to be sent back for repair anyhow )
Anyhow the Magellan was good (when it worked) and had great detail, as does the Garmin.
I have mounts for my dirtbike as well and can swap it around between the Nissan and the bike.
the Garmin Works well and very handy to be able to swap it around, I am sure I can get alot more out of it one day, if I sit down and read the instructions properly !!!!!!!!!

Yes very happy with it's Functions
Yes that is OziExplorer in the second shot I still need to work out how to use O/E.
Street Nav is run by Route66 it works great it does have a few options in the Route66 soft ware that seem to be switched off in the version that came with this unit as I cannot access them.I will be looking into that soon.
thx

GPSOZ has Ozi training. It is hard to get your head around the program at first but definately worth it as its a great tool.
Talk to Brian, he is very helpful. GPSOZ - for all your GPS requirements. (http://gpsoz.com.au)
