In here you can post all of your GPS-related topics. Be it how to set your GPS up for maximum efficiency, what unit to buy, or how to mount it in the car, you've come to the right place.

Ok, i'm about to do a nice track run in the top end of WA and am thinking about investing in a GPS just in case the navigator (my wife) gets us geographically embarrassed (lost). Does anone have any suggestions on brand and type or what i need for bush navigation??

Great to see a GPS section.
Maybe some one could answer this, in very not technical lingo . I have a Magellan Meridian Colour , with Disc Aus sreets and Tracks Vi .I have also the free Google earth. I can create routes on the DAST mapping system and up load them to the Sd card. I can create routes on google, using either the measuring tool, or by stringing way points together, and saving them to a named folder. I was wondering if they coud be uploaded to the gpsr . Be gentle with the terms ..Les :o

the data from google earth would have to be convered using mapsend so the gps can recognise it, if its possible to do that with the google earth data. i havnt tryed with mine but it would be the only way i could see you to get it to work.

sorry missed the orriginal quest for information but damned glad some one had the quote.
Free google earth is a great thing but like most "free" things in net land there are limits to what you can do with it. There is gps compatibility with google earth BUT its not available in the free version. (have a look at all the pull down menus, you will find gps thing)
How ever there is a way you can use google earth to your aid. There is along the bottom of the screen eastings and northings commonly known as 6 figure map refferences.
As long as your gps is set to the correct datum then your 6figure map refferences will help you.
I have a verry good book on GPS called GPS Vehicle Navigation in Australia by Robert Pepper from Boiling billy publications @ www.boilingbilly.com.au
The book has its own "Companion web site" also, www.gpsvehiclenavigation.com
The book is pritty complicated to start with but so is the subject matter. Robbert has done a fairly good job of tamminmg it down to understandable English.
Good luck

Regardless of what sort of GPS you own / buy ,the most important thing is to practice with it before you go any where you seriously need it .
