Here is my old one which I sold the end of last year:(

87 LWB
Wide track diffs
4.1 diff gears
6.1 T/Case
Custom barwork and exo cage
Front Air Locker, rear Detroit
34" Swampers
2" Old man Emu rear springs all round
3/4 Elliptic rear
2" Body Lift
Cut guards
Custom rear tray
front chassis extended, rear shortened
Rancho 9000s on the rear OME racing buggy shocks on the front on extended shock towers
custom snorkel

Here is a pic of how it stood when I sold it
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/grimbo/gjsnew2.sized.jpghttp://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/grimbo/GrahamZook_417.sized.jpghttp://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/grimbo/GrahamZook_233.sized.jpghttp://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/grimbo/aaq.sized.jpg

As you see it has had a few colour changes over the years, nothing a few tins of spray paint wont fix.

I loved this car and regret selling it but just never used it much in the last couple of years. it was awesome offroad and had taken me to places like the Flinderzs Ranges. Innamincka, all through the High Country, Little Desert

G'day guys here is a few pics of my vitara.

Its a 1994 model with the 1.6L carby engine in it. It has a 2" lift via king springs, a uniden UHF, 100w spotties, A/T tyres, a pbr heavy duty clutch, a home made snorkel and an electric fuel pump to deliver fuel to the carby on steep hills at low revs.

Very soon there will be a 2 or 3" body lift that i will wack on it and either 31x10.5 or 30x9.5 goodyear wranglers on 15" rims.

The blue vitara behind mine in one of the pics is my girlfriends and it has the 2.0 L injected motor.

mine zook is on the roids, it's that beefy now it wont go into the workshop. it's too tuff to sleep inside with the soft little cars. only problem is the roid rage it gets when it doesn't get locked in lowrange often enough.

yes it was a moment of weakness! i was bored with my rx3 drag car (11.3sec @ 118mph normally aspirated) so after a few beers i convinced myself that a 330hp racing beat PP would be a nice daily driver! do i ever regret it?? NEVER, this thing had sooooooooo much torque it was stupid, with a 12a auto and at 1500rpm i could smoke the back wheels (locked hilux with 33" bfg's) in high range top gear. I actually raced a vr ss down the highway near our place and kicked his butt, he pulled up next to me and gave me a big thumbs up and shook his head. But the pooor zook t/cases just couldnt handle the grunt. (3 in 4 months). i would love to do a stocker 13b efi in one, cus they have more torque at 1800rpm than a g16a has flat out.

I sold as I just wasn't using it anymore. I never really got into the whole comp thing and thhe tracks around Melbourne I had been drivinng on them for 12 years so got a bit bored of it. Plus with a young son the focus had turned to camping/touring stuff.

Of course now I miss it and would love to be out playing in it each weekend

Whilst not nearly as extreme as some of the pictures I've seen in this thread, this is my "little jeep" out in the bush between a few farms near where I live. This is on a side track from a haul road through a pine plantation in the Ferguson Valley here in the south west (WA), just a couple of weeks ago. The rain has washed out the tracks a bit so it's fun out there!

G'day guys,

Looking to buy either a sierra or Jimny. Only around 5-6K and them spend a bit on it. All up around 10-12K. Can anyone please place me in the right direction. I mainly want to to be able to go across mud flats and rocky terrain etc. I have heard that a zook is great for mud etc. as it is very light. What can I do to a normal looking zook as far as lift etc. is concerned? How much lift do ya need? How much does it cost? What about tyres/suspension etc.? I will be using it as my bush basher to find fishing spots etc. and occasionally driving it to work a couple of days a week. (15mins). Do I buy a full body lift kit and then get someone to do it? (do not have gear/time to do myself. How much would it cost all up? Just need somewhere to start.

hi bud. for the start price you can rule out a jimny...
i would buy a wt leaf sprung sj70 (89 to start of 96) and go from there.
most stock zooks will go where you want it to but bang for buck id chuck some 2" lift springs in with non adjustable shocks (unless you plan on really loading it up) some 225 mud tyres or aggressive a/t tyres, maybe a rear locker, decent bullbar with a little winch (just in case) and a good clutch. i would not bother with a body lift. you could do this for well under your budget and have a very capable zook... then later if you find you need to go to harder fishing places upgrade some more.. the good things about sierras is its always easy to move your used parts when selling them to upgrade.

Thanks for the info. I just wanted somewhere to start as I am new to the game. What are the advantages/disadvantages of say 2" springs and a say a body lift? If so, what is the cost involved? I guess looking at the terrain that I want to tackle up here ground clearance is a must when traversing over these rocky hills etc. I would rather spend that little etc. to get me by, rather than having to pull it apart down the track and up grade..Just a thought.

hi bud.
mate a body lift will do just that, lift the body (no change to suspension) although it does allow you to run larger tyres without changing the original specs of the zook.. you will need to lift your front bar, bend your gear stick and t-case stick, extend your steerarm (from firewall to box) and sometimes your fuel filler hoses. this is actually a cheap way to get some clearance for around the $350 to $400..

suspension lift allows you to fit larger tyres also but in doing so it allows the suspension to gain more travel (better for driving over terrain), you can shop around and take the harshness out of the ride also. you will need springs, shocks as a minimum, you could need diff wedges, extended brake lines, guard or front bar chop (really depends on travel and tyre size).. this can cost anywhere from $450 to $2000 depending on what size lift you end up going for and if its a good kit or basic kit.

you could also use extended shackles (usually illegal in most states) with std springs, this replaces the shackles (part that holds your spring to chassis) with a longer one.this in turn gives you lift without much change in ride but does allow slightly more flex. usually around the $150 to $300..

now if you feel like doing some work to the zook yourself, unbolt your flares (the extension over your wheels) and attack the metal of the guard behind it. once finished sealing up again line your flares back up and bolt them on (they can be lifted around 2 to 4" up the guard) this is called a virtual lift, you have not changed any suspension or used a body lift to gain height. all you have done is given some clearance for your tyres due to increasing guard and flare height. very cheap just time consuming.. anywhere from $0 to $50..

these are your most basic items to do a lift, you can learn heaps on what works and what doesnt and also how it works by doing either or all of these things. later if you feel the need you can go to the more complicated lifts if needed.

cheers bud

Excellent Mark just the info. I need. Much appreciated.I will do some more research before I take the plunge but this gives a great platform to start from. I have been looking at the post 97 model sierras. Correct me if I am wrong but think this is when they went from leaf to coil springs. Hopefully I can pick up a bargain that has been well looked after.

The blue vitara behind mine in one of the pics is my girlfriends and it has the 2.0 L injected motor.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/5408/bluevitarawd0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I am thinking of getting one exactly the same as your girlfriends. Has she had any issue's with it. Hows the 2L motor compared to the 1.6L.

Liam@bbm

It's getting crazier by the day...what started out as a few links and some coilovers is now pretty out of control. Still aiming for fullbodied, street legal, road friendly with heaps of travel, just want to leave people scratching their heads as to how it works. The stripping and grinding work is all done, the design and approval work is done...all I need now is a little spare cash and a massive amount of spare time.

Hey there Patrolling Paddy,

Quick question if I may - I'm considering getting into a JB Grand Vit 2.7, and am wondering how they go on the sand? I previously had a lifted Hilux Surf which unfortunately became a money pit, and the mortgage payments wouldn't allow it anymore!!

I'd love to get a GU Patrol, but sharing a car with the missus means it has to be 'cute' enough (I despise that but hey - I don't wanna sleep on the couch forever!) for her to use as a daily driver as well.

I'm wanting to head to Fraser, Moreton & Straddie, and from what I can gather the Grand Vitara is really the only smaller Fourby that has Low-Range?

Just curious how you've gone in yours?

Cheers,

Roscoe1974

Just had the Transfer case, wheel bearings and Airconditioning system replaced... Not because it needed it but because I don't wanna be out the middle of nowhere and stranded...

http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/images/albums/Lilpigzuk-and-others/1600_install_2.jpg

Currently building a trials toy (our local competition series), strict class rules, so basically factory specs but allowed engine change. So using a 1990 Samurai as the base, supercharged GTi will power it running on 31" beadlocked Federals. Just finished rear disc conversion and running new fuel lines. Next step is attacking the rusty body

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k248/lilpigzuk/boogerbuild007.jpg

and lastly, cos I always wanted one, I got this just before xmas, a 1981 LJ80, which has only done 60,000K and has been garaged most of its life. Just mint inside and out. Will do my best too keep this original (really bad plywood doors, rear flares and hub centres but did come with the original doors thank god)

Super dark limo tint, (flexed heaps better with tint)
2 Spotties 4 reverse,
2.5 inch straight through.

Still had standard shocks (M/L's barely worked, and front down travel was limited).

Was still planning to put triton springs in front and cruser shocks all round. All mods only cost time to fab + some bolts etc.

Oh well time to start again:crazy: At least I still have springs, shocks etc. New one 87 1.3 stocker.

My brother just got an 1985 sj30 (sierra looking body no mistake) it has a 539cc 3 cylinder 2 stroke and 3.052 low range gear with 3.777 diff ratios off ebay and registered it (no mistakes)has heaps of other stuff like rear fog light and skinny "jeep" style tyres, anyone else ever seen one in australia?

Is it 1970something ? Its a lj50 . diffs should be a lot lower than that though.

Looks nice mate, what are the specs of that thing?

SJ80 Chassis with small Suspension Lift, castor correction, strengthened axle housings, plated chassis rails, diff guard, transfer and fuel tank bash plates, rock sliders etc etc.
Carbied 1.6L Vitara motor with 5 speed and in process of sticking in 1L transfer case until reduction gears are sorted. 15x10" US Racing alloys with 32x11.5R15 TSL SX
SJ413 Widetrack body mounted on a 3" bodylift, with an SJ410 front end.

A bit of everything really. Just in debate as to wether i paint the new front end blue, or two tone the rest of the body with silver.

do the rear panels silver & leave the rest blue then it would look real nice

Yeah I saw two tone, the colours are a good suit for two tone.

Also 15X10's are Huuuuuuuuge I think you need wider tyres or smaller rims cause they won't hold the bead well with that size tyre.

Pain the bottoms of the doors & outside of the tub in matching silver, & save yourself the trouble of repainting the inside of the tub, do a line-x type ute liner on the interior that will be much stronger/hard wearing/hose-able & looks sweet...

EDIT: ooh ooh and some steel 15x8 painted silver with some matching turquoise beadlocks mmmmm....

Just my opinion? But a turquoise ARB winch bar (same as Dank's on htis thread) Or even the bar thats on it now in turqoise, rock sliders (in turquoise), yellow bikini soft top to match the springs, diff housing etc., silver wipers and bonnet rubbers (top of windscreen), match the front wheel arch to the rear and def the turquoise beadlocks to set it off.
I think it would look rather trick?:thumb:.

Nah resprayed in 2 pak white it was a bit rusty when I got it (aren't they all?) but all that's done and the sills have 40mm box tube reinforcing and 1.6mm steel walls under the 6mm ally chequer plate. Has a few dings now but goes real well in tight or rocky terrain but does fall down now and then.Zooks are easy to stand back up but.

hey guys i just bought my missus a 96coily sierra today &knowing nothing about them myself thought id check with u guys as to what mods would work and what not... its sposed to b her car but i think im going to have heaps of fun getting it ready for her...
scotty how is that suspension kit u got, i found that on ebay just before and like the price... and how big can u go with the wheels and tyres without having to do to much cutting?
i was thinking id get a 2"body lift and 2"suspension lift, would that give enuff room for 31*10.5*15 or should i go with something slightly smaller?
any ideas would b greatly appreciated

hay cam.2112, the kit is good im pritty happy with it, id stay to a 30 inch tyer that way u want have to change the gearing and shouldent have to cut and bash the gards, mine rub at full flex and at full lock they just tuched the bumper but its just plastick so its pritty easy to cut some out but with a 2 inch body lift it should be fine.

thanks scott

Hi all,
I have been lurking for a while but it is great to finally find a forum that is spam free and active!

I bought a stock 98 Jimny last year that after a few hundred kms of corrugated SA roads it desperately needed some suspension work. Since then, new clutch, recovery points and finally last month a "40mm" lift that turned out to be 60mm and new 215/75's AT's (original tyres were 205/70's). It now sits about 80mm higher off the ground. It still owes me less than $10k and what a difference! The little jimny has grown up and makes the stock jimnys around town look really lame.

In the future, extractors (if i can find some decent ones) and 2" exhaust and a custom intake system to improve intake flow, custom FG front fender to save weight and improve entry clearance. Will keep you posted

before and afters below.

Neil.
