How much of an improvment did the bigger intercooler make.
hmm everytime I click on a thumbnail it asks me to log in again, so I do and it takes me back to the login screen...annoying.
Aha but a refresh fixes it for a while

i am waiting to see one cut down to a style side ute they look GREAT !!!!!
How much of an improvment did the bigger intercooler make. It's a 2001 model so it didn't have an intercooler to start with. It had 147 rwhp before the intercooler, don't know what it's got now but it's definately more.
love your ute kodi :DThanks nate.:)

Same tires as mine. At 12.5" wide they stick out further than the guards. I've recently got some black plastic garden edging and pot-riveted them to the existing guards to keep the pigs happy.

Prettybasic really, I'm not going to do much mod wise as it will be purely a tourer/camping vehicle.
Currently it has a rusted winchbar which will probably go in the bin soon
2" Old Man EMu lift
33 x 10.50.15 BFG MTs which will probably need replacing at the end of the year but have been great tyres on my previous GQ and this one
Cargo barrier
Roof bars and basket
Rear power outlets
Will add some upgraded headlights, window tinting, rear lights and work lights soon. Also need to get some sidesteps as it is a pain to get stuff into the basket. Other than that I'm pretty happy with it.
I hadn't really driven it in 4wd since I bought it about 8 months ago so Robe was its first outing. Had to relearn how to drive as the diesel is a very different type of driving compared to the petrol GQ and my very capable Sierra. But once I figured out the difference it was awesome. It just idles through so much stuff, nice and gentle especially with my 7 week old son in the back.

hey mogsy has quite a bit of flex. the only place they rub are on the inside edge of the guard, no dramas with the turning rims have hilux offset and tyre's sit inline with in outside edge of the guards.

First Plans are a new tray and canopy, then Roof console, new seat, Mtq Upgrade (still undecided there), Would like 3 inch lift and 35's if legal here, diff centre upgrade, then more touring mods.

As King55 Said It's A 2.8turbo. No I Havent Changed The Gearing Yet, But I Have A Marks Speedo Correction Unit On My List. The Low Range Gearing Is Still Fine , She Will Climb Just About Anything At Abound The 1200prm Mark. As For Reduction Gears Who In Their Right Mind Doesn't Want I Set...

My baby has got:
- Series 2000 h/duty GQ/MAV LWB Coils
- Series 2000 Gas shockies
- After market steering damper
- Lock Right front diff lock
- Dual batteries with an IBS battery management system
- 2 hella points in back
- Airtek snorkle
- GME TX3400 UHF with a AE4018K1 aerial
- Heavy duty 4WD Couplertek system
- BFGoodrich 285/7516R tyres
These shots were taken at two four wheel drive courses (one on sand and one off track) I did...I'm just a newbie but have been dying to get a 4x4.
At both courses the GU was the instructor's vehicle of choice to demonstrate how to snatch someone out of a fix.
Sand or dirt she handled beautifully. On the dirt course she was the old girl on the block but sure showed up some of the newer 4x4s...everthing was effortless.
Last picture she is basking in the shade on Straddy. I hope to get some shots of the Patrol in action like some of the pictures you have sent in - they are awesome!!

Thanks,
best way to showcase what you do, is have something people can see I guess, car currently has 3" LT coilswe designed, but had 6" coils with the 40's and yes, we have new front flares which are larger and longer than standard nissan ones, which look similar, and I used 17 x 10 alloy rims with 3" backspace to get them to fit.
Heim jointed sway bars dont allow any run up of momentum over the bar like flex in rubber bushes does, so control is instantanious, not delayed reaction. The alloy ones in the pic are also extended to suit 2-4" lift, or 4-6" lift.
We set the length so they work with the standard sway bar with 14" stroke rear shocks and 10" stroke fronts, without impeding collapsed or extended travel.

MattYeah the Rancho's are the go for long travel. They come in 3 different travel lengths for the Patrols I think. My Rancho's are too short for my 6" springs though. Need the longest ones I think.
I'm not surprised you still get full travel with the sway bar on (they are'nt real thick) but it's amazing how much quicker and easier it will flex without it connected.
Do any of the GU's have the Factory rear sway bar disconnect like some GQ's have? (not much use with over 2" of lift though:( )

those aren't actually taillights, they're just dummies - the only light in there is a reversing light on the left side. tailights are down in the rear bar, with a high-mount stop light inside the top of the right barn door
and yup, kaymar bar

Hey Guys,
Im thinking of upgrading from my Lux to a 03-04 GU cab chassis this year, well, actually in the next 3-4 months, and wondering if its better to go for the wagon or the ute? \
Im talking more in terms of standard off-road-ability. Ive read that the cab chassis utes arent as good in the low down gearing as the wagons. Is this right?
Id be getting an upgrade chip, 4 inch lift, slap on my 33x10.5 muddies that I already got, tough dog shocks, new lower and upper arms, probably castor plates instead of new arms, front locker (LSD is good enough).
Im pretty sure this suspension setup is legal in QLD?
Any feedback would be great. Cheers
ps. Did the cab chassis come in any other colours apart from WHITE, gold, red, WHITE, WHITE and more WHITE??????
Ta again.

Ive read that the cab chassis utes arent as good in the low down gearing as the wagons. Is this right?wagon and ute alike, they're all bad :) fix it with aftermaket reduction gears
and a chip won't do you much good on a ute cos they only come in 4.2
the suspension you described probably won't be legal because you'd be increasing the bump stop distance more than 1/3 over factory, and the tyres would be approximately 50mm larger diameter over factory when the legal limit is 15mm
don't let that stop you though :)
Thanks we like her

Yes mate, there are many & a variety of cool places ... just like in OZ
Altough not a GU, this is my other Nissan, a solid axle swapped Navara king cab or ute, swapped V6 , etc

Easily done
and a chip won't do you much good on a ute cos they only come in 4.2 So a chip and possibly a 3 inch exhaust wont give more power? Id be looking at getting the intercooled TD4.2.....

don't let that stop you though :) For some reason I thought 4inch suspension wouldnt be a drama, not like Im going for the 6-8 inch lifts. Perhaps I'll go for the 2inch spring lift, and either a 2inch bodylift (last option) or 1-2inch coil spacer. Any ideas?

I don't think there's an ECU on any of the TD42 incarnations mate, so I suspect there's nowhere to plug a chip in
If you really want to stay 100% legal, I don't really have any advice as I don't know 100% what the legalities are. I initially had a 4" lift on mine, then changed it to 6". I tipped it on it's side when it had the 4" lift and 33" tyres and my insurance company didn't bat an eyelid. I'm sure they could've used it to get out of paying if they'd wanted. Also a serious road accident with technically illegal lift could result in major woes, but this is the chance many of us take I suppose. Not to try and justify my choices, but I think the regulations are overly restrictive, particularly the 15mm tyre increase limit. I'm not sure whether it's possible to get 4" suspension lift and 33" tyres engineered and considered legal in the eyes of the law or not.

The GU Utes and tray backs run the same gearbox and trans cases as the wagons, and usually run numerically higher final drive ratios, ie wagon 4.11:1 ratio, Ute 4.37:1 or summat like that (can't remember the exact figures) that will actually give it BETTER low down gearing.
But the total low range gearing is still going to be in the vicinity of 22 or 24 to 1 ratio, NOT MARVELOUS but certainly acceptable while a set of Gearmaster or Rockhopper gears for the Trans case will drop the low range by anything up to 85%, dragging the low range ratio down to around 65-70 to 1 which is NOT to be sneezed at. So if you run big wheels, the Ute final drive is a better ratio to have, but the 2.8 GQ final drive ratio of 4.68 or something around that is BEST to have, and the Gearmaster or Rockhopper gearsets for the Trans case are fantastic! Drivable around town, fantastic low range off road!
But your statement that the cab chassis utes aren't as good in the low down gearing is WRONG! They are actually marginally BETTER than the wagons, thanks to that numerically higher final drive ratio!

That was the question I was asking, as I had read in 4wd monthly (an old one with the 79 L/C to Patrol ute comparison some time ago) stated that the ute had worse low range than the L/C, which Im assuming is correct, but I wanted to get a "feel" from the regular drivers as to its performance off road. I reckon that ALOT of Patrol cab chassis drivers CANT be wrong if they choose to drive that particular truck.
I havent gone thru the specs of the wagon and the ute as I cant find all my mags in the move to Brisbane, but the final drive ratios make sense. What I was trying to get to the bottom is whether the ute is better off road than the wagon, as im in two minds to go the ute or the wagon.
As for the TD4.2 not having the option of a chip, thats disappointing, I didnt realise that the engine was THAT old :-p
Perhaps I should go back to looking at the new V8 L/C 7o series? cant justify the $20K extra though, thats a lot of bullbars, steps, tyres, winch, etc etc that could be bought for that mullah

that's actually one of the best things about the TD42 :)
I think there's a simple fuel adjustment mod that people make, and a 3" straight through exhaust and they go like a rocket. And no electronics to go wrong in the middle of nowhere
also, I'd recommend not basing your choice of wagon vs ute on the relatively minor difference in diff ratios - I'd consider cargo/passengers, and maneuverability (far less roof and panels to damage on a ute) over diff ratios if I were you, especially since diffs can be changed pretty easily
Peter @ Aawen4x4
21-05-2007, 04:51 PM
Not a great deal of difference in DRIVING off road between the Ute and the Wagon, except that since it's got about 200kg less bodywork to lug around, the ute is a bit spritelier! And then again cos there's less bodywork, ramp over and departure angles are better. And another thing, since the utes have about 80 litres of fuel in their (fairly well tucked up) belly tank, the rear main tank becomes a bit of a dead weight hanging out the back! Depending on what you want the truck for, you can actually lose all the chassis and tray from immediately behind the cross member in front of the main fuel tank, ditching the tank and about a metre of chassis and additional weight and overhang!! If you are going comp the truck and don't need the extra seats for anything, then you are going to look at beefing up the top seats for the rear coils (something well worth doing) anyhow, then that cut just behind that cross member makes a great deal of sense and saves even more weight, giving you a quite short MWB and light weight comp truck from the base cab chassis!!
And while the more recent motor in the L/C might be a bit nicer, and the total low ratio makes it a little better for crawling, most people manage to get the Nissan turbo set right to provide a pretty reasonable amount of power and that teamed with the virtually indestructable drive train, only needs a little strengthening, and they have a great comp machinein the Nissan. I think it's the strength in the drivetrain that make the Nissan the choice truck for comping, and that it's so easy to mod to make it go better and harder!! Not too many 80 or 100 series Toyo's out there, but they ARE growing in number slowly!!! Way more Hilux's tho'! Maybe you should consider a lighter vehicle to start with??

yeah, i wasnt just basing the choice between wagon or no wagon. I would prefer a ute, as I like them over the wagons anyday, as per Peter comments about weight, body panels etc, but if the wagon was a much better truck off road, then the choice between the ute and wagon would become easier, as in the long term an wagon is better for carrying people around, especially if that means having to carry an extra 2 "guests"...ie. family or friends. But since that is rare for me (Ive an extra cab Lux which doesnt make a comforatble ride for anyone taller than a dwarf in the xtra cab!).
Since they are both equal in drivetrain, same gearing except final diffs, then a cab chassis for me would work better.
Still need to decide on colour, as I still would like a bit of bling!!
Thanks for the discussion, its certainly narrowed my thinking and options.
Cheers

Just noticed this way back there, and I couldn't see any answer for it!
There are NO non common rail 3.0lt Diesels in the Patrols, and the 4.2 n/a diesel is the same one that was in the GQ etc. You know, the one that was old when Adam was a wee boy!! They've been around forever, have no significant problems except that they don't wear out, and they use about 11-13l/100km. A relatively std vehicle (wagon) without a heap of weight, 33" tyres pumped up hard, only the driver and a small amount of gear, and driven carefully with economy in mind recently managed to achieve 8l/100km between Adelaide and Sydney (and return) Oh, it did have a single Hiclone fitted too! Not a real economy run, just driven with economy in mind.
And conversely I know of a couple of vehicles (wagons) with big lifts and lots of barwork, TWC rear bars, big tyres, full cargo drawers, LR fuel tanks (230 litres of fuel) & 70 litre water tanks underneath, 50l more water inside, roof top campers and some other gear up top, two persons on board and gear for the next year loaded that consistantly only get about 20l/100km. They did a similar sort of run to the economical run above and pulled it down to 15l/100km, but the driving manner was difficult and unrealistic for the vehicles to maintain forever. Oh, and they don't have Hiclones fitted but I reckon one of the owners is considering it! Again, not a real economy run, just trying to keep economy in mind!
All of these vehicles have done noticeably worse when they've filled with fuel from the Supermarket Chain sponsored Fuel outlets, so they generally get fuel from either independants or the Franchised Petrol company outlets. Generally the Cab/Chassis jobbies get better fuel economy, but there isn't really a heap of difference in the N/a machines. Once you work out what the vehicle will get, it doesn't change much due to load or where it's driving etc, they just plug on. That's one of the significant factors about N/a diesels.
Hope it helps some!

A couple of mine, it's stock at the moment, just waiting for the tax return to roll up and then I'll be getting some better tyres a front lokka, steel winch bar and a roof rack and a 2 or 3 " lift.

Hey Paul75. Nice looking GU mate, Im looking at getting one soon, but cant find any 4.2L and cnt decide if I want to risk the 3.0L!!
That last pic of ya truck in the river, wheres that at? It looks familiar, looks like Abercrombie Nat Park?

G'day V6,
Yeah I went thru the same dilemma with the 3.0L vs 4.2L. Obviously theres a heap of differing opinions. I wen't the 3.0 and haven't regretted it.
As for that picture it's in the Sunny Corner SF up between Lithgow and Bathurst.
Good luck with your purchase.
Paul.
And yeah I'm running 285/75/16's which is about 33" (Cooper S/T)
