throw the rangie donk and place in some really HP's like a 454 (don't know if it'll fit, but who cares) ;)

on the level, get the head shaved and ported and polished. Extractors, and bigger air intake. Put in a lumpie stick (camshaft) get the engine blue printed. Boring it out etc. A simple tune up might give you a few more ponies.

But you have to remember that all these things cost lots $$, and you have to way up the cost of these mods to a engine conversion. ;)

Correct me if i am wrong guys ;D

extractors and a big exhausrt will put ya more than halfway there

All comes down to how many $$$ are you willing to part company with, to what you are likely to get.

For big HP, a new engine, probably a big block chev, or a chrysler V10 mmmmmmmmmmmmm

well my GQ is a turbo diesel and thats not bad, but i'd like the rangie to go a bit better for fun

i'm giving 2-4 grand for power mods, so whats available for that. is putting a 4.4 rover donk worth it? can get a chev 305 in but thats about 5000 with all extras

Chase up an old P76 and steal the 4.4L out of it. Should bolt straight in as they are the same block. Or you could find out what is involved in taking yours out to that.

Look at the word in that post 'Old'. years and years ago, everyone was messing around with p76 donks etc. But today they are getting a bit hard to find. ;)

this isn't a go at you nischev ;D ;D

I think yankeedave is looking for a little more power....... not a shitload more LOL 8) I'm guessing he wants to squeeze a lil more out of the donk that's in it.

4.4 is a great little donk. Got two of em ;D(one's a spare now as I just put a reco in)
Look for them in truck wreckers also, as there were quite a few Leyland Terrier trucks fitted with this motor up until the early 80's, one of which I have 8)
This aforesaid truck is quite happy to cruise along at 95 to 100ks with a 5 tonne load on board (7800kg GVM) and at 12-14mpg is quite economical

dont pull it out and put in a chevy engine. keep the light rover one. you can bore it out up to 4.6L, put on a supercharger, extracters and exhaust and it will make you fly. it all depends on your $$$$

I drove one with a couple of turbos on it a few years ago. Certainly wasn't lacking for power ;D

yep the P76 is the easiest way to gain ponies. they bolt straight in. my mate in maryborough Qld is in the process of rebuilding 1 to go into his rangie. i think the only thing he said was different were the engine mounts. but he got his out of another rangie so all the works done he's just giving it the once over so he knows everything is right. and they are a very light weight motor which is good.

P76 has less head studs and other cost cutting measures that make big power a little less reliable than modern operators will accept.

In the old days ( I had a '78 in '81) we used to find a set of 10:1 cr pistons from the P6 sedans, Extractors, Cam & the best non Holley carb(s) you could afford.

My recently bought '76 has exhaust, Holley & gas. I'll fix the suspension & then fit a 3.9efi from a Disco.

How fast do you want to go??

you can actually bore it out to 5.2L. It depends on where you are. in WA you can go to jordan rover-tech or rover craft. in sydney go to bruce davis performance landys. ;)

For $2K try to find some buick 300 heads, have the inlet manifold modified for a holden V8 carby and put on electronic ignition. You will be amazed at the difference.

I know rangie automotive in lillydale do these types of conversions. They have a a couple of modified rangies themeselves. The mechanic their who races has a 4 door rangie cut in a ute running 3.5 block stroked to a 4.3 or 4.2

from memory phone number is 03 9739 6989

Hi Dave

Keep the rover engine,it is light and your suspension is set up to work with that weight. Also the 3.5 can be bored and stroked to various capacities, most common being 4.0lt and 4.2lt.The 4.4 P76 engine is ok,but parts are getting harder to source and the engine would need to be rebuilt anyway. The 4.4 terrier engine is set up as a truck engine and isn't a very successful transplant into a Rangie as its power output not suited to Rangie gearing etc,and again would require heavy modification. The other option would be to obtain a 3.9lt engine from a Discovery, and have that fitted,it will give you approx 50% power gain over the 3.5.Don't forget that if you go to High power engines like Chevs etc you will also need to change the drive trainas well as suspension to cater for the the heavier weight. And as for the people to speak to in Vic. someone already posted the phone number, but the name of the place is Les Richmond Automotive. And the guy to talk to is Andrew. And no I have no affiliation.I am in NSW.

Parts no problem for P76 or Terrier engines, in fact easier now than a few years ago.
Only difference between the two is about four points in compression ratio.
Terrier engine therefore runs fine on ULP, P76 prefers Premium (or Super)
I've just had the motor in my Terrier rebuilt to P76 specs with no major hassles
(there was an issue with the turkey that did the water pump tho.....bent the housing ???)
Truck onlly out of action for three weeks and now going better than ever ;D
One thing I don't like.........it's got Holden Hyd Lifters >:(.........I Hate Holdens ;)
