the quality on the camra isent fantastic, but i think that Fujifilm Cameras are the best value for money.
If you wanted quality look into Nikom or Canon, you will not regret it.
keep away from kodak, sony and asian brand no names.
dont worry about how many mega pixels a camera is. look at how big the image sensor is. EG some camras might say 6mp but only have a 2mp image sensor, so its really only 2mp. DONT BE FOOLED INTO SALES CRAP

if you were to buy that camera with the same spec in a canon or nikom you would probly pay 2x the amount. you get
ITEM RANGE what I Think
ISO rating Auto, 64, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 (good)
5MP Image Sensor 5.2 million (good)
Zoom 38 mm - 380mm (fair)
Macro focus range 1cm (excellent)
Aperture range F3.2 - F8 (fair)
Min shutter 15 sec (poor to fair)
max shutter 1/2000 sec (good)
Uncompressed format RAW (excellent)
Battery AA (4) batteries (NiMH recommended)

I have the fugi film s5600. I feel it takes awesome pictures. The xd cards that go in them are great too. I have a 1g xd card and it hold over 800 photos at 5mp size and over 1600 at 3.1mp size. The video function is fine for short videoing.
For the price i feel it is the best buy.

I must say I dissagree with that statement. Although I prefer Canon or Nikon also, and my current shooter is a Canon Digi SLR, but my lense alone is worth 3 x the price of the camera he's asking about.
For the entry level compact camera scene, there are some fantastic products available these days. And the level of technology people are getting for their $400 is amazing.
Kodak compact digitals always seem to have a brilliant colour saturation and take great photo's. A handfull of the images on my site are taken with a low end 3.2mp Kodak Easyshare that's about 3 years old. they've also just released a twin lense version that is incredibly small but offers a 5 x optical zoom (for those unsure - Digital zoom is your worst friend.)
Fuji Finepix range is another that seems to offer a great point and shoot package. Especially those with the full aspheric lenses, though not as compact. Sony is another good Japanese brand (same as Canon etc) and offer some nice little packages.
The only thing I agree with is the no name thing. Don't buy a brand you haven't heard of. Even if it promises 1000mp and 400x zoom for $50. Like they say about things that seem to good to be true.....
And.... Megapixels aren't megapixels. Aim for a decent amount like 5mp. Any more is a waste unless you want to print posters. If one camera is $250 for 5mp and another is $450, there's a good reason why and you'll see it in the end result.

I've got a Panasonic FZ20
Looking into a mid-high range Canon at the moment.
The (Lumix) FZ20 is great, it's only 5meg, but takes awesome shots. The image stabaliser is second-to-none (Even most big dollar babies). Features are wide and varied and the menus easy to access. Very good camera to learn from. A rotating flip-screen would have topped it off, but now that it's been super-seeded the new models have that. The FZ-10 is exactly the same, but a compact. (Heard it described as the girl version :p) probably the thing I don't like is that the manual focus ring is quite firm to use, and can be hard to use at times. This is over-come by a very responsive AF mode though. It's not a true SLR, as it is a one peice body/lens. But there's nothing it can't do that an SLR can. Full range of lenses and accessories are still available for it.
There should be a few FZ20's that shops are trying to push out the door now, as (like I said) they have been super-seeded. Worth looking into the Lumix range anyway, for the reasons I mentioned above.

I've got a sony DSC P100. It takes a good photo, its got some manual features and is easy to use. BIG problem is dust though. I've researched the problem and its very common. I'd never buy another one. And I've just heard that there's a recall because of some problems with the display.
Some time next month I'm getting a Canon 400D. Going to get a body only off e-bay then get some nice "IS" glass (image stabilised) for it. Though I'm still not locked in on the lens'.

i use a canon 350D, but like mentioned already, the money is in the lenses. it's pretty easier to spend twice your budget on a single lense alone. i know my macro lense was around $800 and thats at the lower end of the price range.
if you are planning on getting serious then save for a decent body and a lense to start with, unfortunately for what i have they are around $1500 usually with 2 lenses in a starter pack, now superceeded by the 400D. you can then upgrade to better quality lenses if you start to get serious, but be careful, once you start getting into it the lenses can get pretty pricey.
alternatively if you don't plan on getting into it big time then don't waste your $$$ on something that flash and spend it on your fourby instead. photography can gobble your $$$ just as quickly as your fourby if you let it.

Just my opinion
I use a Canon 30d, but for you Kenny, the best thing would be to save up the few extra dollars and get a second hand canon 350d ($800 or so). It's the entry level in to DSLR cameras.
Once you've used a DSLR you will never want to go back to a point and shoot. They are much quicker to use, there is little or no delay between pressing the shutter and capturing an image. there is no "digiltal zoom" it's all optical (no loss of image quality when zooming in), they're still as simple to use as a point and shoot (idiot modes) but as your ability grows, the camera will not hold you back.
Some draw backs are, that you have interchanagable lenses which means that the Cmos is subseptable to dust specks, as Rumpig mentioned to get top quality photos you can spend 10's of thousands of $ on lenses, but the "starter packs" will give most everyday users the quality they need.
The new Canon 400d Has a 10mp cmos sensor and is also self cleaning (Cmos)
So that no one thinks i'm a canon rep, the Nikon D50 or D70 would be just as good for everyday photos as well.
Hope that helps.
If you need anyhelp PM me as i was a Pro shooter years ago but just keep it up as a hobby nowadays.

Hi Kenny,
Here are 4 that I have taken recently. Actually 3 I have taken 1 that my 7yo son took (the frog). The photo at the swimming pool was taken on the auto function, the photo takes almost instantly, no delay like earlier models. Although there is a continuous shot feature if you need it (I use that 4wding).
Hope this helps, remember I had to reduce the size of these photos to put them on here. If you have Broadband PM me if you want a full size one emailed to get an idea of the quality.

I love my digital camera, although there's not much point telling you all about it. It's a Konica Minolta, and they don't do cameras anymore. We recently got a letter saying that Sony would be taking over our warranty etc.
For what it's worth, it's a Konica Minolta Dimage Z3. 3MP, 12x zoom and has an anti shake feature. Set us back around the $350 mark I think from memory and is an awesome camera. Simple operation and takes some awesome photos.

I agree with your thoughts. The only compromise depends on what he or any one else wants a camera for. There's no denying a digital SLR is a completely different league compared to compacts. However, compacts are generally that, a handy size that can go anywhere without full on bags or a big bulky body/lense hanging around your neck.
The other thing to remember (others, not you) is that a digital SLR's sole purpose is to take high quality still images. Unlike compacts they cannot take video. The decent compacts these days can actually take impressive quality video clips.
So like everything else, it comes down to horses for courses.

I also am using a panasonic lumix, buy I have the FZ5. Its similar (less features) to a FZ20, but also is the compact version.
I think from memory it is somewhat similar camera to taht of the fuji you were reffering to. It has been excellent for what I wanted it for, but as I got to taking more and more photos and experiment with mroe settings, different lights, i realised i need more adjustment or "control" over the camera. I've also found this particular camera to be quite 'noisy' in low light. (photos show a grainy effect at hi res) It also only has an 8sec max exposure, so that limits experimenting with night shooting etc a bit too.
I also want to get into surf photography a bit more. For that I need something a bit "faster" (ie DSLR) also something more popular to fit waterproof cases, and interchangable lenses (telephoto from shore, wide angle in water etc)
All that said this camera has DEFINETLY served me well though!

I agree with wthat your saying that its all in the lense. but the fujifilm s5600is not an SLR and only has a fixed lense.
I personaly found that Kodac & sony camras are high in grain, even the sony power shot. even they say that they have a low iso of 64. the grain level of the 64 is about the same amount i get shooting at 400 iso. I would love to see a pic to prove me wrong. (we are talking about non SLR. dont send me a pic of the Kodact SLR because that in a difrent level than what im talking about)

theres lots of different thoughts out there guys i can see , but for "me" im after the best quality non SLR digital camera for $500 or under
I have been useing a Canon 20D digital slr. (These have been updated and replaced by the 30d.)
Also have an 12-24mm tokina wide angle lense, a 18-55mm Canon lense (came with camera) and a 75-300mm Canon zoom lens.
And i use a Canon speedlite 430ex flash for when the light is a little bit low.
Have been really impressed with this particular camera.
Not gona suit everyones needs due to either price or size, but if niether of these are a problem then it is good type of camera to use.
What ever camera you do end up with always try to get a UV Filter if there is one available, these come in very handy protecing the lens surface from damage. I figuer that a $30 odd filter is a lot cheaper than a $1000 lens

Yup the brother inlaw had the 20D when it first came out. i used it a couple "o" times because I had never used a Dslr b4. Had been a pro shooter about 15yrs ago and sold my Rollie gear about 4 years ago. Got the bug again and thought i'd go digi. Had a sureshot 520 for a while, but couldn't compare between that and a Rollie!! After using the 20D, I did my research and saw that the 30D was being released and i waited. As usual when you buy the new release of anything the price always drops!!! $3500 when i got it. $2500 now!!!!
No regrets though

Sorry Kenny we seem to be digressing from your question again.
My old Digi compact is a canon powershot 520. (about 18mths old now) and I still use it at work for finished product shots.
Looking back at the images they really arn't all that bad in comparison to the 30D that i use (all things considering!!)
http://images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/57278/medium/323339.jpg
Taken on my Powershot A520
I just been checking canons web site and the powershot A710 IS is a nicely spec'ed camera and sells for around $450 to $500.
http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras/digital_compact_cameras/powershota710is.html
http://www.canon.com.au/images/big_products/a710isfrontangleft.jpg
It has a "Optical Image Stabilizer" which means that you don't have to worry about "hand shake" to much, it can help you in low light photography and while your zooming in on distant objects. (the same IS system in a Dslr lens will cost you about a $1k depending on the lens!!)
The Powershots can go full manual as well as all the normal "idiot Modes" (no insult intended) and has a 6x optical zoom, which means that when you zoom in the camera is using the lens, as aposed to "digital zoom" which is akin to croping (or resizing) your photo with an image software editor. It just enhances noise (grain) or any imperfections of the camera.
I may seem to be pushing Canon, but if you think about it, Canon and Nikon have been in the camera game for some time now (canon since 1933)
and these 2 brand names have the advantage that they have been making thier own lenses for 70 odd years, so the quality is there. Canon or Nikon are the brands most used by professional photographers (I used to use Nikon back when i was using film) and the backup service (from Canon) is pretty good.
So if i was looking to get a sub $500 compact camera I think I would definatly get the A710 IS (infact i think I just talked myself in to an early xmas gift!!!)
Hope this helps

G'day, I've got an Olympus sp-500uz. I think its a great camera its 6 mp and 10x optical zoom has a large 2.5" monitor as well as a digital viewfinder. It has heaps of features including manualized modes so use can change appature and the like. Plus has a good quality movie mode which can take as long videos as you like your only limited by the size of the sd card. I got this for $500 with a 512 card. The new model is out now and its 7mp for about the same price. Top quality photos for a reasonable price.

I would think hard about getting as big a CF card as possible (2gig or more) unless you are downloading at the end of each day to a lap top.
Recent trip to Fraser i filled a 1 gig card in 2 days and had 2 more days to go!!.
I now have a 2 gig card as well.
It's amazing how quickly you can fill up a card when you go on a trip.

Why would you shoot at low res? You never know when "THAT" photo will come along. It'd be better to go for high res and reduce later than go low res and not be able to go super size with an awsome photo that just came out of the blue. I've got a 1gig card in the point and shoot. 490 pics on high res. With the new conon I'll be going 2 gig I think.

Ive got some pics of a sunrise at Loveday that i took at 30 second intervals on different settings and the difference is HUGE, ( all part of my learning curve ) I'll wack them up if ya want to have a look! just let me know!
Steve.

I have a Nikon coolpix 3700 range and is fantastic i use everywhere,4x4 comp and everything else in general. can get them cheaper now on ebay. i would post a few pics, but dont know how yet, must get steve-et4wd to show me how.
Any reason why you want to shoot in low res JPVM?
Not meaning to be nosey
No problem man, just because in low res I get 1380 x 900 pix pictures and don't need more size / resolution in my pictures.

I find you can't go past any of the Kodak EasyShare range. Simple operation, great if you want someone else to take the phot for ya. Almost bombproof. And if you get the print dock, those special pics can be printed as photos at home, in standard photo size.
Get a big SD card tho, the more the merrier.

Hi Kenny,
Ive just bought a FujiFilm FinePics S9500 and im very happy (big change from my old 2m Kodak)
If you was to get the S5500 or S6500 like others stated already you wont be disappointed (If it was me i would get the S6500 for only a little extra)
Cheers Dan

My wife gave me the Fuji S6500fd for Christmas and the photos are superb.
We had a new Dick Smiths store open up in town and they had it for $100 under usual price.
