View Full Version : another newbie, worried about tipping over

I tried to drive my hilux down a slope on an angle and chickened out because I was afraid of it tipping over (lots of words I don't normally associate with myself), now I can drive my 2" lifted Subaru down there and not even think about it.
Whats wrong with me or am I correct in backing off when my rear wheel lifts off the ground?

Lifting wheels doesn't mean that it is going to tip over. You just need to learn how far it will go, but remember it will only go so far.
You need to make yourself comfortable with the car and know the limits. This can take some time to learn. Take it easy and take your time. If you are going to put it over, it's better off being a slow 'over', there's less damage that way.
On my website there is page there that I have done for a mate that rolled his hilux and called us for a recovery. Was in a place that you wouldn't even think about slowing down, let alone rolling it.
See it here: http://www.corrysplace.com/aaronsrollover.htm

You could do what i have done and am still doing. Find a spot where if you do start to tip over your Hi lux will lean on a tree or a bank. just to learn your and the vehicles limits.

this does very little damage and you get the feel of how far you can push your yourself.

Go get a course under your belt, either an independant provider, or with a 4WD Club. Especially with a Club, you'll get access to a vast wealth of knowledge, and most are more than willing to pass at least some of it on! One thing that you will learn is that going down hill if the thing starts to slide, lift wheels, or tip, the correct approach is to turn directly down the hill and gently accellerate until the vehicle is back on 4 wheels and under control. Avoid braking aggressively or attempting to correct by turning the wheels UP the hill! It is harder than you think to actually ACCELLERATE when the car is teetering on two wheels, BUT IT DOES WORK!! (Even in an L300 Express Van!! THAT was HAIRY!!)

Get a course!! You're in SA aren't you? Come on up to visit us at Summit Trax 4WD Club, and we'll take you out on one of our training trips!! Next meeting is this Thursday at 7:30pm, finished by 9:00pm but we'll start at around 6:00pm with a BYO BBQ at Anembo Park rotunda. The meeting is just 30 metres away in the Anembo Park Clubrooms!! Anembo Park is just off the SE Freeway near Mount Barker. Take the Mount Barker exit and head away from town, towards Littlehampton!! Anembo Park is the first driveway on the right after the freeway, and the rotunda is just ahead on the right, clubrooms another 30 metres on the left!!

We will be more than pleased to help you find out info on any clubs closer to your home, or if you want to sample our training, join us on our next trip and we'll show you some of the things you CAN learn, and how easy it is!! Hope to see you there!

The December Meeting will be held on the 14th of Dec (that's the Thursday that week isn't it) I know it's not much between, but we've got a few people who want to get things sorted for their training, (it's all competency based and they need things signed off) and they want to do it before people start heading away for Christmas! Some of the members will be off to the High County for Christmas and New Years Eve, returning just after, while a few more of us are doing an 'Explore the Ottways' trip from 6 to 13 Jan 07!! Seeing as how I run or deliver a fair whack of the training, it all sorta has to work around my availability at the moment, but we've had 2 more qualified trainers & assessors join in the last few months, so they will be up to speed in a month or so, and take a bit of the workload.

But do come to a meeting, and if you want to join us on a trip over a weekend, or even just a Saturday or Sunday, PM your mobile number and I'll keep you informed of what we have happening! Nothing flash, but a good opportunity to get out with some people willing to share their knowledge!

Enjoy!

..., while a few more of us are doing an 'Explore the Ottways' trip from 6 to 13 Jan 07!!

Post atrip report Peter. I might be heading that way in the April hols, probably to Gippsland but want to stop off for a night or two in the Ottways.

Can do PmPat! Just remind me if you don't see it!! This one is going to be a 'Exploration trip' aimed at given everyone a glimpse of what's around, and letting them get all sorts of ideas for running more comprehensive trips themselves!! Basically a way of getting other people interested in the places that I get to take punters too!! That way I don't always hafta lead the Club trips, others do and I can follow and cast nastersiums when the time calls for it!!

Remind me if you don't see it by end Jan! Make sure that someone posts the MLR High Country trip, AND your Gippsland/Ottways trip!

There are learned responses that are better than the 'hit the brakes' but you'd hafta either take a lesson or maybe two, or join a Club and start to work on those competencies!! Invite is open to anyone who wants to come and visit Summit Trax, got a short trip on this Sunday, largely local/SE south Oz, about 500km all up and a lot of interesting flora, fuana, & history along with gentle to medium driving! Any takers, PM me!

Cheers!

The insurance assessors dont call em Rollux's for nuthin:D

Regency wont approve spring overs without an engineers but Hilux's have em from the factory.

Well they got ADR approval in stock form, they don't need an "engineers". ;)

but yes they might seem a little top heavy but at least they don't weigh 3 tone.

Don't get me wrong guys, that isn't my Hilux. No offence to those that have one, but wouldn't give up any of my Cruiser's for one. Everyone has their love of vehicle, and so we should, I love my Cruisers.

Maybe if u get sum flexy springs and staged valved shocks u mite feel more confident as it will keep wheels on the ground more often than not. OR u cud put a 4runner coil rear in it :). I highly recommend a 4x4 club as ther knowledge is priceless. Cheers mate and happy learning

There's your problem, don't drive down a hill at an angle. Always head straight down. Anytime you head across a slope it is more likely to roll you over compared to going straight down.
