Just thought id post this so others dont make the same stupit mistake. Decided to put 4 spots on the roof a few months bak when the 4runner was only at a 2" suspension stage. Managed to fit under most carparks and got to know where I cud and cud not fit. Recently fitted a 2" bodylift and 33's and In a hurry to make it to a band the other nite forgot that i was 2-3" higher. Snap Crackle and Pop ther goes my lights, luckily it didnt peel the roof off like a tin can, just cracked and bent the rhino rack that ther mounted on flush against the roof. Also luckily it didnt smash any of the lights, but now they hav the scars of yellow paint and scratches on the covers to prove it. Remember that the higher u go the less places that can accomodate ur vehicle, I no ill be sure to check in the future. Also a trick I used to do b4 I replaced it was measure on my 2m aerial wer the top of the lights line up, put sum tape ther so if the flexy aerial hits on or under the tape u no ur lights will hit. (bit cheaper to replace aerials than 2 pair of spotties)...cheers

I was thinking of lights on the roof, but it will not fit in my garage, I was working on a quick release system that can easily be disconnected when I dont need them.
Thinking of a rack with butterfly nuts for quick release and some sort of de-attachable plug under the bonnet. Almost like a power point.

T90-USSR: I am going to fab and drop-down light bar so that I can fit kayaks on my roof rack without havingto remove my light bar. My roofrack stops about 1' from the windshield so I plan to have attach the lightbar to the front of the rack and hinge it so that it is able to swivel forward and lock down. I'll post pictures when I get it made.

One of those anderson type plugs would do the trick for quick release elecky connections - think they cost between $10 -$20.

What really peeves me off is that my 4b is still standard height with 31's and it only just fits in the carparks now. Even with a slight lift i will be buggered...

ive got about a 1 1/2 finger gap between the roof of the truck and the 2100 marker at the shopping centre near me. the first time i went into the s/c i nearly pooed myself. i came to a screaming halt, cause from inside the cabin it looked like it was going to have an argument with the sign.
cant park there if i get 36's (o well, you win some and you loose some :D)

I took the lazy way out for this problem, bought a set of roof racks with extended legs, so my kayaks sit above the lights.
I've been trying to figure out a quick release system since I fitted them to my car (very first mod, lol), but still looking...

i also run my ariel just above my roof height as a guide. not that i need it(yet) at standard suspension and small ass h/t tyres.... cant wait for the lift and muds.... my brother went into an under ground carpark in brissy cause the sign said he was just able to fit. what the sign didnot account for was the raw sewage pipe that had been only recently installed. it lowered the roof height by another 4 inchs, which did not agree with the head boeard on is cruiser ute..... lets just say he made a speedy get away, luckily still had a clean truck but ..and now take a lot more notice in car parks.... it was the following morning by the time the motel realised they had a mess to clean up, and a very bad odour....

yeah im the same as disc alex. I got an aerial thats the same height as the lights so i use it as a measuring stick. Doesent protect you from rogue low branches though. My 75 series doesen't fit in my garage or carparks. then some people park their little bubble cars and rice burners outside because their too scared to drive underneath. Its getting harder and harder to find a park anywhere these days.

LOL, I used to do that too, before I lifted it, now I'd be the one panicking, PIAA lights aren't cheap :(
But it's good if you can have an aerial to guide you, (my UHF is about 4" too short, and the AM/FM one cops a hiding if I put it higher than the snorkle)

i had to dropped the valves out of my tyres to get the zook out of the workshop under the house after installing a lift kit that was suppose to be 3" but turned out more lit 4" at the front & 5" at the back.
only just squeezed it out now it will never go back in.

There is a small bridge on Brissy South East somewhere.. sorry about the suburb as I am from the Northside (I think it is around Redland Bay maybe) where the road goes under this bridge but there is only about 6 foot clearance!!! seriously!
Bugger the roof lights I was in my Hilux coming up to this thing thinking "How low does that thing look" then hit the picks when I realised that my roof wouldn't go under let alone the 4 spotties I had up there!
I felt a bit silly having to come to a grinding halt and having to back up and find another way around but I was also pretty concerned that if I had been a bit more asleep and not realised that there was bugger all clearance that I would have slammed into this thing.. as it was I was close enough to actually stick my hand out past the windscreen and touch it by the time I stopped!
This was a number of years ago now and the last time I went there which would have to be 5 years ago now the bridge was still there but there was plenty of warning signs etc this time..
My young fella comes home the other week and shows me the roof of his Hilux with fresh scratches and some dents.. turned out he had a tressle tied down from his tray and sticking forward of his cab.. forgot it was there and tried to go into the underground carpark to the local shops... He hooked up the height bar and tore it out as he went.. funny story when he was telling me but what could I say... I have done stuff just as silly!
I loaded a fridge etc all onto the back of my Hilux ute while helping my sister move out of a unit she was renting once.. drove off only to hear this almighty crash.. I didn't realise there was a friggin big overhead sign and facade at the entrance to the units.... Didn't do much to the fridge but bent the crap out of the signs and stuff!!! D'Oh!

Speaking of spotties on the roof. My brother had two on the rack over the roof of his Triton when he went to visit our old man in Victoria. An hour after crossing the border from SA, he was pulled over by a cop and told to remove the lights as they were in an illegal position. Apparently all forward facing white lights must be in front of the driver to minimise windscreen glare. Anyone else had trouble with the law regarding roof mounted spotties?

No, they've never even been mentioned on countless RBT's, or at rego checks, but then, I haven't been to VIC with roof lights.

In Melbourne they will write you up for it no worrys, I know of at least 7 blokes that have got a defect notice "canary" for lights above regulation height. But now that I have said that I know someone that has never been touched for it six bull lights on a roll bar on a Hilux living Western suburbs of Melb so go figure.

That's a bit academic...
The UHF aerial will get busted pretty quickly scraping on the roof of an underground carpark...unless you take it off, and there goes your measuring stick.

it can bend under its own lenght with the spring on the bottom to make it horrizontal, if that happened I would have no roof from the bottom of the w/screen upward so the condition of the uhf would not be my main concern
