Re the engine.. Is it injected, what type of injection, what does it include with it etc?

If you are going to get it approved then you either have to run straight gas or the current specs of the car.
Marks 4x4 supply a good kit to do the work.
The conversion is very easy.
Michael.
I picked up my stock 350 for $3500, but it hadn't been rebuilt (done approx 70,000km's).. It was a 93 TBI (injected) model, and came with everything (computer, wiring harness, power steering, air con, all brackets, etc) plus a T700 auto.. I sold my auto from the patrol, and rebuilt the T700, so there's another $350 spent there.. The head gaskets appear shot, so I'll be spending a few more bucks there, and hopefully the heads will be alright.. That might give you something to compare with..
If you go for that engine, you'll have to look at what carby it's running and possibly get that sorted out to run on slopes..
i think the carby is a rochester???? not sure how to spell that. ive been looking into injected carbies no any thing about them? there pretty exy$$$.

from what i am told, you can buy a brand new GEN3 in its crate from GMH in SA for a bit over 6k!
thanks mate but thats a bit more than i wanted to spend on the engine. whats the diff with the rochy compared to holley? with the engineering part with the later model engine. o thought that with a catalyc converter it would be cool. would they engineer dual fuel?

You will have to run a catalitic converter if it is post 86 model which ever way you go. duel fuel is ok as long as the lpg is certified by the right people. Holley is cheap simple carb works well if set up properly. Rochester is complex carb works even better but harder to set up.

Holleys are pretty good............if you are going in a straight line. They tend to flood on hard corners and steep inclines and declines. The Rochester doesn't have the problem, but like Stu said, they are hard to get running properly. Once you do though, they are very good and they give you a little more torque than the holley.
i just got the news that i didnt want the old 4.2pet is about to die with out some pretty extensive work so it looks like this conversion will start to happen sooner than i thought. thanks for your help guys

Is it possible to mount a 454 in the GQ engine bay? If so does anyone have a rough idea how much this may cost & can you use an existing gas setup for the new engine or do you have to get it re-complianced?

that price is pretty good seeing that it is a total rebuild, lots of new parts, couldnt go wrong.

454 should fit easily enough. dollars couldnt tell ya and i think your gas system would need uprading to supply enough for a 454 which would probably meen getting it recomplianced which is no real drama.

Why not go for an injected Holden 5.0 Litre? They are easy enough to get hold of and parts are plentiful with easy power up grades.

I'm with you redfox !!
I'd go the crumpledore V8 to, easy to get parts for , good power upgrades avail!
EFI no flooding on hill climbs it just dosen't get better than that. Can even get akit to match the com auto to the patrol transfer. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Absolutely the 'easiest' way to go. My son's GQ is about to receive an implanted Commodore 5.0 ltr EFI with the Commodore Transmission (fully reco'd) adapted to the Nissan Trfr Case (by Marks 4WD). Inserted Transmission/Trfr Case, & Motor minus heads, EFI etc. on the weekend, and spot welded the new Engine Mounts (provided by Marks). Removed motor and fully welded new mounts - (took longer to remove the old ones). Motor bottom end now complete & ready for Heads, EFI, etc. to be fitted, then new exhaust, and hopefully it will be on road again by end of October.

If you can find one get the 215 from a hsv gts, far more torque and hp.
485 NM at 3800 rpm and around 400NM at 1200 rpm.
all about 1000 rpm lower than the 5 lt.

I have done this and it is unbelievable.
get around 22-25 mpg if nice to it (110-120kph)
Michael.

if you're going to go a carbie engine - love their growl!!
make sure it's a rochester carbie - holley's don't like the slopes - especially when they're on a 4WD...
plus the rochie's are better suited.. ;D ;D
if you need more info on engines etc... i got mates that used to work with landsvale racing team (V8 supercars)
so they can help on the engine side etc... ;D ;D
