hey there, could some one please help me with an over heating 80?
am sorry about the long post.
I have just recently had an aftermarket turbo fitted onto the 1HZ, and aftera drive to port macquarie and back today, io noticed the temp gauge rising quite quickly, very noticable on hills but was occasionally rising and falling on level road about 90kmh
the needle never goes below half way, and i even noticed it once on a hill on the hume Hwy before the turbo was fitted. it never has entered the red area but am very puzzled
I am puzzled as one radiator dude has said that he believed there is a blockage, but someone else said it could be the thermo ???
Is there a known problem with the 80s ? what would be the best thing to do?
If anyone has any info they could share it would be muchly appreciated.

Do you do any mud driving? The radiator could be full off mud (mud stuck in between the fins), that's what happened to mine. If not you could take it to a radiator place to get it flushed out.

thanks mate, yeah have done a bit in the mud a while ago, but now am back in sydney, ill whip it down to natrad and see what they think. unfortunately it made the day a bit unenjoyable . thanks for the tip mate :)

If u run a electric thermo.. throw it away and put the std fan back on.. u cant beat em.. but other than that i would also guess at mud in the fins or maybe the thermostat is about to crap itself

You said that you hadn't noticed it overheating until you had the aftermarket turbo fitted. There are two elements to this, is the Turbo water cooled, if so there may be air still trapped in one of the pipes or a kink that is preventing the flow of water creating a hotspot. The second: do you have any air bubbles coming out the radiator (cap removed)when the engine is at operating temperature with the thermostat open? If it does this it is a sign of a leaking Headgasket. If you have either of these issues it will overheat.

Have the radiator serviced and replace the thermostat which aren't bad things to do every few years anyway and go from there. It MIGHT be a cracked head or head gasket but I certainly wouldn't worry about that just yet!!!! Do the obvious things first as above and go from there. Also check there is some resistance to the viscous fan too as these can start free wheeling and not drive the fan properly. Dont lose sleep about it and just do the basics first, it will be fine!

Viscous fan clutch not working, or not working properly would be the most common cause. You should be able to hear it cut in and out as the temp goes up and down. It should also roar when cold in the morning with a few revs up, and then die off.
Second would be external and / or internal blockage in the radiator, depending on how much mud the vehicle sees and the coolant type and service history.

Thanks very much for the info guys.
i drove it home from work today a slight raise in temp up the warringah road hill, but stayed reasonably steady. am taking it to the place where turbo was fitted and are going to hook up the Pyrometer again to get a reading, could it be the turbo creating a rise in under hood temp?

Seeing what reading you're getting on the pyro, would be top of my list of things to do. If you have excessive exhaust temp (caused by fuel mix / boost level etc), will certainly show up on water temp gauge too...........

Cheers mate, am running it down to them this morning,and theyll get the pyro down for tomorrow it think.

any water leaks my 3f overheated when the water pump was worn it started leaking.

hey my dad had the problem with his car over heating when he towoed a car up the hill at gloster if u know it u will understand. and he found it was the vicous thermo thing bolted to the back of the fan that was the problem. basicly if u have speed over 70 or80 km/h and it don't over heat to ya slow down that might be the problem.

I had a similar problem with a 1hz and it turned out to be a faulty temp guage. There is a voltage stabilizer I think it is called in the temp guage and when it plays up it affects the temp end fuel guages. Next time it happens have a look at your fuel guage and see if it is going up as well. If you have an instrument repairer in your area they can repair it. Hope this helps. Veeman.

Had the same problem 12 months ago turned out the thermostat was broken.

A couple of things you need to remember before you start replacing every part of the cooling system , is that by bolting on a turbo , you are increasing the temperature of the intake air . Also , my guess is the fuel pump has been adjusted to suit the larger volume of air being delivered to the cylinders. If the engine is developing more power (energy ) it has to go somewhere. This energy is given off in 3 different areas : 1 - Horsepower at the flywheel , 2 - Heat out of your exhaust , and 3 - Heat into your cooling system. If you haven't increased the capacity of your cooling system , how do you expect it to cope with the extra heat it has to try and disapate ? People that sell turbo kits never tell you this !
The higher intake air temps will eventually shorten the life of your engine too. An intercooler will definately help , but may not entirly solve the overheating issue. Bear in mind that a front mounted intercooler passes that hot air across the radiator core to , which lessens the ability for the radiator to do its job.
