Hey all,
I own a 98 Ford Explorer and when I start it the 4WD high and 4WD low lights flash 6 times.
It then flashes 6 times approx every 2 minutes while I'm driving.
I try to engage 4WD but the high or low light doesn't come up. They still flash every 2min. So i'm guessing it's not going into 4WD mode.
>:(
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Clinton.

maybe you could try disconnecting the battery overnight to allow it all to reset and try again.
just check in your manual that you can disconnect it and not cause problems first.
shane :)
Clinton,
How does the 4WD system engage? Most electronically controlled systems have a switch that closes to confirm that 4WD has engaged. In my Pajero this is in the front wheel hubs (near the vacuum hoses that actually do the work) and it is a common enough problem to find that this switch gets dirty and causes the lights to flash on the dash.
Check it out – it should be asy to work out.

Do you always select the mode you require when in Neutral? If not try it. If so, be patient. How long does it continue flashing for?

I switch to 4WD mode by turning a switch from auto to High or Low.
I have tried doing this while in neutral but it doesn't seem to fix the problem.
The lights continue flashing 6 times every 2 minutes while I'm driving.
Looks like I might have to take it in to get a diagnostic done.

My grey import Prado has a similar switch & does the same if the hubs are not in.
I have to press the switch for the hubs & then the 4wd light comes on.

I finally fixed the problem.
I disconnected the battery for a few hours which reset the computer.
Everything works fine now. ;D
Thanks for all the advice

Pure fluke, Big Red!! ;D ;D ;D
When you are resetting a computer by disconnecting power, do so for at least 30 seconds, sit in the car if its auto and run it through the gears, put your foot on the brake, operate any other switch which is driven through the computer [arial, int wipers, radio, etc] and this will ensure any capacators etc which may hold power in the ECU will also be drained.
And if all else fails, get a diagnostic lead and look up the error code with your laptop ;)
