It's funny I live only a couple of hours from Stockton and have never been. What are the camping options around there?? Have to pass it by the minister for war and finance but hope to come with wife and 2 kids (8 and 10).

Stew
01-08-2006, 10:47 PM
You ask "What are the camping options around there??"

That depends on what you want. There are a couple of private camp grounds in the area. However, I prefer to camp on the beach. Just remember to take your rubbish with you. Too many people leave rubbish on the beach which looks terrible.

Stew
02-08-2006, 09:46 AM
Here is some links re camp grounds for those who are interested. Don't forget you can camp on the beach for free.

I'm not fussed, camp on the beach or stay in a caravan park.

Chester, were you thinking of camping in a caravan park or staying in a cabin?

Chester
02-08-2006, 01:26 PM
Either one mate i just know the missus is not gunna be happy with the sand

gohard60
02-08-2006, 07:07 PM
:oare you guys for real whats wrong with camping on the beach just take a dome tent easy to put up etc and boiling the billy on the fire you cant do that in a cabin or a van. Staying in a van or cabin would be like staying at home
remember it is a beach so there will be sand there in the daytime as well.

Brendan
03-08-2006, 05:01 PM
i didn't even realise you were allowed to camp on the beach! in that case, it's a swag and a 'million star hotel' for me!

Stew
03-08-2006, 05:30 PM
My understanding of the camping situation on stockton (I was told by a council ranger) is that it is officially not allowed but tolerated by the council at present. He stressed that if you are having a fire put it out with water, do not put sand on it. The sand just gets hot and burns poor little kiddies playing in the sand up to 2 days later. He has also heard reports of 4x4 tyres being damaged by hidden hot coals.

That's it, there's no problem camping on the beach it's just not encouraged as knobs like making aussie middens (beer bottle middens that is) but it's no problem as far as rangers go. As for camping depending on group numbers I know of a nice little blowout in the middle of the dunes surrounded by trees giving a good windbreak that would be fine for upto about 10 people or there abouts...

I'll hopefully be up for an overnighter on the beach, possibly an overnighter with a night fish in there somewhere ;D

Should we put together a list of everyone going and who is meeting where on the day. Wouldn't want to leave someone behind. Just a thought.

I'm defantly going on the Saturday. Rain Hail or shine. Well maybe not hail.

I'm not sure if I'm camping. Haven't cleared it with the wife yet. If I don't camp I'll just head home in the arvo. I'll meet you guys at Lavis Lane Servo at 9:00am. I'll be in a white 100 series crusier so look out for me.

Just canned something else on this weekend so I'm in now. Should be able to rope in a few guys from work and hopefully bring my better half along too.

Has anyone ever done any sandboarding out there. We're keen to try it.

I assume some people will be camping out there on the beach?

I'm in for camping on the beach, UhhOhh mentioned he knows a good well protected spot to camp, he can also can get some sand boards which would be great fun ;D

UhhOhh
22-08-2006, 10:38 AM
Depending on the numbers will pretty much depend on where we can camp. I was out there yesterday and there's probably a max of 5 tents in the place that I know, its only good as it is in a little blowout and surrounded by bushes which makes a good wind break and easy for a toilet break. If theres more Im sure we can find another spot really easy :D

The sandboards come from my work (port stephens 4wd tours) and will bring half a dozen on the day, they are just sit down boards like taboggan stuff, which is still great fun, but will also have my stand up board if you want to try that too (to try the stand up one you have to enjoy chewing sand alot :P)

I had a quick drive around yesteday and the sand is very soft already, plenty of quicksand out there :o, so in a months time it will be very soft I'd say so bring the shovels and snatch straps for me ;D (my patrol sucks on sand)

Not much of a lake left, It's mostly dried up and split into 2...

The second one (north) is pretty soft in the middle though, nose dived into it and got over roof water a few months ago when I was up there... And left my front numberplate behind :P

But yes, that's the best camping spot...

I was up there all day yesterday, theres next to no water in those freshwater lakes anymore. But that spot near the cross just to the south side of lavis lane against the tree line is a good spot. If that's where you guys are thinking of? Im a little confused where but Im sure we'll have no troubles finding a good place to sink a few million bevvy's.

As for the fishing I have never seen so many salmon in the water, they are thick as anything particularly down the south end. Watching the great whites skittle them again and again was great!

The beach is a dump at the moment too. This cleanup cant come quick enough it's littering the whole beach.

Are we going to limit the amount of trucks going? I doubt we need to. There is a lot of room up there.

I ask because I have a mate that may want to come. He just can't confirm yet.

I still in sat and sun, camping on the beach over night and doing a bit of fishing as well. Maybe a little dune surfing if I'm feel active.

Brenden and I will be doing a write up in the magazine aswell, so you'll all have a chance to get your truck in an upcoming issue.

I dont think we need to limit the numbers, like Stew said, there's plenty of room, we just need to accommodate a number of tents where ever we camp.

I'll be getting there later on anyway (prob about 5pm Sat) so I'll leave it up to you guys...

Might be an idea for everyone to pitch in and bring some firewood due to the rain. At least enough to get the fire going anyway...

UHF? 24?

As it's a big turnout and Brenden and I will be doing a write up in the mag, we're going to attempt to get some sort of prizes together, so if anyone can come up with some sort of game that everyone can get involved in, let us know. I was thinking a treasure hunt or something.....

Heading from Sydney, turn into the servo, keep left and we can park a number of 4x4's on the left in front of the pumps, around 8am, look out for this:

Or you can go hard left, through the Truck bowsers and park in the Truck rest area, save taking up bowser space on a Saturday morning.

The Servo attendents don't mind you being in the truck stop, as long as you don't inconvienience the truckies by being somewhere in the way. We used to do it on car club cruises and had up to 50 cars in there sometimes.

Hey Guys, just thought i would give you this link to keep abreast of weather up this way for next weekend..this is the local up to date radar....

http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR043.shtml

I think as its getting closer we would nominate channel 24 uhf and 24 am cb as our official channel..i will monitor both from the metro ..any worries there??? also i think finding our spot to camp would be a good idea first as we can unload some gear then play...i have a spot in mind but someone may have a better spot closer to lavis etc....as im not running this show and have opinions only please feel free to tell me to go get @#$%$#...don't forget permit for travelling on beach thats avail from metro at lavis...don't forget snatch strap, long handled shovel and some rated shackles...dont forget some garbage bags and would suggest only bring cans full of your favorite beverage......council has a large skip bin at entrance for our disposal of rubbish at end of trip...guys i could organise a observation run from the metro then proceed to birubi beach via the highway and then the run down to our camping area via the inland track..which i think would be a great addition to the overall trip...you would need to answer questions along the way without the need to stop and points would be awarded etc....total points win....ive done heaps of them and are good fun....timeframe to birubi then onto beach would prob be an hour tops...so 09:00 metro ...leaving by 09:30...run to birubi in convoy 10:00 10:15...let tyres down then onto track...past silver city...get to campsite....setup...hand in sheets.....then afternoon to play or fish....happy hour...winners announced...then drinkies....i need to know if this is what you wanna do as i will be driving up there Sat 09 to see my son....i can set the trip notes up on the way....sorry this is so long winded and short notice but was racking my brains for some ideas for some prizes that was mentioned but i like to get involved...if you need to ring me please call 0405357414

I think it is time to confirm a few details. Sorry if I'm treading on anyones toes doing this but I'm at work and bored.

Departure points

1) Thornleigh McDonalds at 630am for a 7:00am departure. Meet up in car park.

2) Twin Servo on the F3 Freeway at 8:00am for a 8:15am departure. Go hard left, through the Truck bowsers and park in the Truck rest area. Make sure your not in the way of the trucks.

3) Lavis Lane at approx 9:00am. Meet at the Metro servo. Anyone needing permits can purchase them here.

Need for a limit?

If we are worried about the number of 4b's going everyone better list if they are bringing mates with additional 4b's. No need to list passengers. This way we can work out how many vehicles to expect.

What sort of limit are you thinking of HLX40L? I think 20-25 would be ok, maybe a couple more. Heaps of room up there but finding a good camp site out of the wind might be a problem for this many 4b's.

Fire wood

If possible can everyone bring a little fire wood. As you know there has been heaps of rain this week so finding dry fire wood up there is going to be a problem. You can't camp without a camp fire. I'll probably be cooking on the camp fire as well so I need a few hot coals. I might bring my gas cooker just in case.

Can anyone think of any other details we need to finalise before the day?

HLX40L
12-09-2006, 10:45 AM
Stew couldn't have said it better me self, dont worry about my toes ;D go for it

I was thinking about a limit of 25, now I know that's a lot, but we have plenty of room, also if need be we can go for a drive in a few different groups.

The fire wood could be a problem if every body doesn't bring a little bit along with them. Does anybody know if you can buy bags of wood from Lavis Lane servo?

Also can people let us know who's bring mates in other 4x4, I will continue to update the list.

Cheers, Dan

Stew

For those that want to buy firewood, I've just spoken to the metro service station at Lavis Lane and they sell bags of fire wood.

30kg - $18.99
20kg - $15.50

They have a few bags left but I think I'll get mine before I get up there in case they run out before we get there.

OK, whos bringing extra "luxury" stuff? I'm bringing 2x 10'x12' Thick tarps (one to string up above and one on the ground to put esky's etc on so you don't end up with sand through everything) And I'm thinking about strapping a tressle table to the roof and bring it up, it makes life a hell of a lot easier for food prep etc.

Brenden has offered to bring up a BBQ if anyone wants if.

Just a side note also, make sure you can identify all your gear, not for worry of theft ( >:( ) but with 40+ people around, there's gonna be a bit of similar looking gear around, will save arguements etc.

And I have the OK to bring up some prizes (DVD's etc) so we need to figure out a game or challenge that everyone can get involved in.

Rabs sounds like great fun mate, just one thing, I think we're going in through the lavis entrance not the birubi entrance... not sure if I understood correctly where the observation run starts from. I dont mind which way we go through its just the two entrances are about 30km's apart so would need to know which one to be at and when.

Also the birubi entrance is not a drama at all to get on and off at, the recent rains were preceeded by high winds however so the dunes are a complete mess at the moment with wet sand on top and soft newly formed sand on bottom which will make things a fair portion boggier but more fun none the less!

Hey Guys, ok here is the deal..we are meeting at the metro at lavis lane at approx 09:00 as per original arrangements....we will run the observation rally from the metro service station departing by 09:30 or so....we will travel the bitumen road to the Anna Bay turnoff then to the beach access which is about a 20 25 min run total, you will have to answer cryptic questions along the way in relation to signs etc along the way..we couldn't run it up the beach as there is nothing much to see other than sand..if you are on your own we will find some passengers to go with you..once we hit the beach access then we will let the tyres down and head up the inland track to the campsite...ill collect the sheets and score them and find a winner...1st 2nd and third..crunch has very kindly organised prizes...each question will be worth at least 1 point...I will monitor UHF 25 and AM 25 from the metro....so all up if we leave the metro by 09:30ish we will be on the beach by prob 10:15 so it wont be a long drawn out affair.....also if anyone can bring some witches hats(5) i can run some good fun events for the afternoon before happy hour ....any problems with any of this???..i have all the run sheets ready to go for the rally and are photocopied ready to roll....hope this meets with everyones approval and that im not getting too pushy...cant wait to see you all and have a beer or 10......time is ticking away very rapidly so any questions will need to be posted asap.....hxl40l can you post up latest list of names so we got a fairly firm idea on numbers...cheers guys my liver is quivering in anticipation :o

One More Sleep To Go

If we can watch the footy, that would be great. If not radio it is. I'm happy either way (as long as the knights win).

I'll be meeting at the twin servo. I'll get there at around 7:40. We are still leaving there at 8:15 aren't we? I'll be driving a white 100 series so look out for me.

I got a bit of fire wood last night from my parents place. We'll need more though. If you guys can get some together that would be great. if not we can buy some from the Metro servo at Lavis Lane. I've already posted the prices. Seems a little silly to buy fire wood though. Given the rain has stopped over the last few day we may be able to find some dry stuff up there, what do you think?

Will pick up the Cental Coast guys @ twin servos 8:00 - 8:15am?

I'll deffinitely give you a yell next time we go. Its good to go two up just in case you get stuck. I know I got the first bogged award but I had a ton of excuses on the back of the ute. i was at stockton yesterday, but i got there late and didn't meet up with anyone. had a ball out there but found a problem with my cooling system in the 80 series. drove for 10 minutes and nearly cooked the motor. i'll check my thermostat tomorrow and see what gives.
