The gallery section would be the perfect place for any OTIS photo's.

Who added in the Suzuki club photo's there?

I cant see how to add anything unless it is closed to the site owner.

Pat

I may have missed this in an earlier issue but, Is Otis fully registered and insured? Have you got engineers certificates for all the mods?

Looking forward to a report on your fist comp, can you tell us how you went.

I'm pretty sure Otis is comp only, not road registerred.
Spends plenty of time on the trailer.

Why would he need indicators (sep) on it then? or worry if a cop was going to notice he'd removed the leaf spring guides (july)

baby_troupe

Looking at most recent pics in September 2003 issue, I do see indicators, but no no plate & no sign of a rego label.

Humpy
30-08-2003, 09:18 PM
I figured he must have taken the plates off for the photos, privacy and all that. Hadnt thought of the rego label, maybe it was supposed to be registered but it all got too hard.

Otis should be at round 3 of the xtreme winch challenge this weekend. Good luck Pat

I was reading through a few back issues (haven't got all of them) and was thinking the exact same thing. There's the odd picture of a part of Otis, but no full pics. Maybe the mag should do a couple page story on her (if it hasn't already been done) and include heaps of action pics.

Did you answer the Rego question?

Otis looks wicked but again I am with the other guys in the fact that we don't have any full piccies of Otis. The 4wdM Calander idea will give us all a chance to see Milo and Otis in their glory. Wack a real price tag on it and your laughin.

For forum members only, the rego is - wait for it - SUZ 38L.

Whaddayareckon?

And you want Otis pics? Try next month, there's plenty. I've tried convincing the boss that a poster book should happen, but he'll need some more convincing it seems. I'll try again I guess.

Poster book or calender would be great.

The calender could be done each year and show the best 12 or so 4wd's from the year.
Shot's that didnt make the mag, so that it is new material.

Hey the 80 Series rolled is my partner Kevin Bowers , he is one of the best blokes i have ever met ,my brother of another mother ! and even if he's a Yank ! He took his wives 4by out for a hack , took it to the top of a rocky outcrop , got out to take a pic and over she went end ova and came to rest between 2 50foot tree's ! He had to remove the rear wheel to cut the tree down and winch her over , they towed it home and stipped all the goodies out and replaced with the stock items .Sold all the goodies on ebay and made a killing !!! Then insurance paid up , he drove down to Pheonix AZ and brought a 1999 Rangie for his wife to drive soo she can't have his baby {the red one in the other pic } I took the club Pres/vice pres or whatever he is out 4x4in on the weekend just gone as i keep telling him that the Landie Club of WA isa Wild Flower Sniffers club , he didn't have a good day !
We started out and his electronic ignition died like 4 times and he repaced the optispark and cap over , then continually stalled it whilst driving around the harder core areas , on a decent he smashed his track rod bad , we fixed it up as best we could then on another section he blew his rear diff apart with 2 bolts / pieces of steel busting out of the housing , so he dropped his tailshaft and we towed him out !! So now we have 8 Rangie owners wanting to come out in 3 weeks and do the track with us ? I may just have to start up a tour guides as well ;D lol But seriously he had a real bad day !! anyone want any of the pics let me know and i will email them to you
take care

Pliers are usefull but scissors are to cut out the piccies of OTIS from the next five issues - you know the every-angle photo shoot that none of the readers have been asking for....................NOT

Pliers can be sustituted for the bottle opener - and if people can't open a bottle with pliers then they should stick to cans ;D ;D

I spose the tow nail clippers can be left off. The longer the toe nails the less chance of stubbing your toe when wandering amlessley around the bush barefoot and drunk ;D

Hey Guts,

The only reason I put the guards on was for rego, and the beauty of them is that they can be pulled off in about 2 seconds. I love the fat-arse wheels hangin out look, and that's why I chose to run HiLux axles. So basically, the guards are for the cops - oh, and the mud, where they keep the crap out ofb the cabin.

The busted fairlead roller was done after engineering - so no probs there. And I'm not sure that it's busted state would make it any less safe anyway...
As for the roof lights, as far as I'm aware, they're 100% legal - as long as you don't use them on public roads. And covers make no difference to legalities - that's a U.S-only rule.
And the 'doctored' shot was not designed to cover up the Unifilter. The bloody thing fell off while doing some preying mantis impersonations up the Lake Cumberland Track. The top shot has my quick bush fix (my sock!), and the bottom shot shows the slightly more permanent fix. A chopped up little placky rubbish bin with an OE Triton filter inside. I couldn't get a Unifilter replacement in the backblocks of Tassie - but it seems to work fine!

The V6 has been bloody great. It's dirst cheap, you can find parts anywhere etc etc. Plenty of low-down torque too. ALthough it doesn't sound quite like a V8 :'(
Nick Mannell did the conversion, and it landed somewhere around the $8K mark.

I sit in the cab and sing: "Rain rain, go away, come again another day".

Nah, I just get kinda wet. The soft top keeps most of the rain off, but there's a gap between the top of the window and the top of the door, so I wear a jacket and get a wet arm. Ahh, the joys of customising...!

or will i have to go with something like a 3y / 4y / or a 22r my main worries r the overall length (the rear shack mounts r right at the back for the rear leafs
thanks heaps hope u can help me

That's a tough one. I've never seen it done before but no conversion is impossible. It's just that some are harder than others and invoilve more chopping and engineering.
I believe the engine would fit okay, but yeah, you will have real problems with the length of your driveshafts.
Have you though of extending the chassis? One relatively simple mod like that could make the whole process alot easier.
If it works, gimme a call when it's done! You may be 4WD Monthly-worthy! ;D

Ok blokes and blokettes, now that I've finished updating the story catalogue, when I have a bit of spare time I'm going to start putting the story of Otis together. Now, here's the question - what's the format going to be like? Simplest way, I believe, is for me to scan each page and convert into a PDF then create a website linking each page. However, I don't have any experience creating PDFs, so I don't know how big the files are going to be. For those on broadband it's fine but no self-respecting dial-up user is going to want to load a 5mb file each time they want to view the next page. I'll have a play around with image qualities and sizes and see how that turns up. Ideally each page would be no more than 200kb each.

Any suggestions?

Brendan

Ok, try this. Random scanned page. It should give a general idea of picture quality.

http://home.iprimus.com.au/seymours/page2medqual.jpg

155kb, medium quality.

Internet Explorer 6.0 and later, users:
To prevent automatic image resizing, go to Tools up the top of Internet Explorer, Click 'Internet Options', click the 'Advanced' tab. Scroll down til you find the subheading 'Multimedia' and uncheck the first button, 'Enable Automatic Image Resizing'...otherwise it will make the image fit to your screen.

Sweet. Well all I need now is a scanner so I don't have to go bothering people and I'll be set!

Why not use some OCR (optical character recognition) software when scanning in the text. It's not perfect but, given the nature of the forum, a few letters recognised incorectly will be overlooked by everyone.
The big advantage is that it will require a lot less disk space and will save a lot of bandwidth i.e. us dialup users will have a chance.

Those images just then were perfect for me and im a dial upper (really slow too like 38.6kbps) and it was quite fast!

Hey Brendan, any progress with this yet??

Also Pat, I was watching an old winch challange dvd on the weekend, the one that was really wet, and you put Otis on its side. Anyway, Otis's wheelbase looked really short, and I couldn't remember anything being in the mag about the wheelbase extension?? What wheelbase have you extended it out to from stock??

Howdy Twisty,

I've measure the wheelbase, but I can't quite remember what it landed at. Longer than an MQ though. Basically, I chucked in 4Runner leaf springs on the back, mounting them on the same front spring mounts as before (had to modify the mounts though, but same location). Then I just modified the rear spring mounts to recieve the 4Runner shackles. Gained a fair bit of wheelbase though - which was pretty easy on the LWB chassis.

Cool, it looks heaps better with the longer wheelbase 8)

It looked really strange on the Winch Challange DVD.

I'm hoping to stretch mine out to around 100" 8)

Have yo got those coil-overs in yet??

Otis

Nah Twisty,

Coil-overs are no-go for now. No time to do 'em, doing too many DVDs!

Great idea with the scanned story, maybe list it as a feature on the 4wdmonthly home page rather than just in the forum too

Put the otis saga into the mag in instalments as well or instead, either way I'd love to read up on such a creation, I saw otis at the olympic park show and man that's the biggest zuk I ever saw.

Hey Pat,

Quick question about the battery system, how does it go under winching? What is the solinoid rated to? Have you killed it under winching yet?

Cheers

Otis
04-11-2005, 12:13 PM
Solenoid is fine, and winching no probs. Dunno what it's rated to though.
Last outing at Coffs I winched myself, plus three other fourbies up a decent hill, and she went like a legend.
Only problem is with a triple battery system, two batteries tend to stay idle for long periods, reducing their life. Batteries like to get worked and charged / discharged regularly.

I too have followed OTIS since its humble $300 beginnings. Any pictures would be good... Or even a dedicated mag to OTIS, MILO, ANT 4WD, and others in the crew. Posters also score big. As for putting an pictures find someone who has inserted pictures and ask them how.

I LOVE 4WD MONTHLY.

P.S. Go to WWW.HIGHCOUNTRYCUSTOMS.COM.AU/Events and check out Cal Goodman's (my neighbors'), sweet tracks.

I know this is the otis thread so appologies up front but there's no milo thread. I was wondering if roothy plans on doing a spring over on her, the old girl would love him for it instead of her draggin her belly all over gettin gravel rash etc or is that sort of thing not his cuppa xxxx. Maybe you could get him on here to get a milo thread going as there's heaps of innovation on her. cheers ;D ;D ;D

It's illegal to do a SPOA in QLD so he can't do one. Also why dod one on a touring rig, his seems to work very well as it is.

Fluid flush I wish! Two grand later, and Otis is running a brand new Turbo 700. The blokes up there installed the newie in a day. Drives heaps better now, cause I think the old one was abit worn out anyway. Plus now has an extended breather!

have you put a transmission cooler in OTIS?
or don't you think it needs one?
