22-04-2003, 09:21 PM
Ok I'm gonna give a boring comment here. I see this sort of thing with the Holden and Ford boys all the time (Yes I drive a Ford LTD aswell), and I'm sick of it! If you like Nissans, you're gonna buy one whether or not the Toyota is good, and vice versa.

Whether you buy a Patrol or LandCruiser, you're gonna be happy with either, because they're both awesome rugged off-roaders. Patrols get bogged, and most likely a Toyota will pull you out. LandCruisers get bogged, and most likely a Nissan will pull you out. It's physics!

Who cares which one whoever thinks is better. It's all the same crap! Just get out there and tow each other out!

I likes a bit a digging at the brands, as long as it's in jest, I mean most 4x4's and 7cars out there are pretty decent these days........
What I dislike it that for many Aussies in cars it's either Holden or Ford, & in 4x4s it's either Toyota or Nissan...... ::)

Cracks me up when people have to defend their choices of 4WD like its for family honour or something.

Now let me see if I have this right?

Nissans no good?

Toyotas are overpriced junk?

Petrols are gas guzzling no place in a 4wd?

Diesels are gutless/costly to repair?

To be a 'real' 4wder you need lots of 4wd accecories?

If you have too many accecories your not a real 4wder?

This cyber 4wdin is getn a bit complecated for me.

I mite just go back to drivin around in the bush the way I always have, the more forums I read the more things I find out that Im doin wrong/ driving the wrong vehicle, ect, ect.

:)

Sounds like you are reading too much into it.

Work out what you want to do, get something that can do it, then do it.

except here at this time of day most havent been drinking yet....... :D

Simon
06-05-2003, 02:23 PM
Thats what I do baby troupe, been doin it for twenty years now.

The only bit I find different about sitting around a campfire is Ive never sat around with a bunch of computer nerds drinkn stubbies. ;)
Maybe I should try it sometime. NOT.

I think its strange sometimes that those with the loudest one eyed opinions are usually the most inexperienced Toorak tractor types.

I wouldnt mind a dollar for every time Ive seen fully equiped full on 4x4s bogged while the locals drive past still in 2wd!

06-05-2003, 02:26 PM
Locals not caring by engaging 4wd in a 4wd environment.... the bogged car probably got run off the road by the local who couldnt stop for fear of getting stuck.........

06-05-2003, 02:28 PM
Kewl.

Like I mentioned somewhere on this forum, I have not been driving 4wds for long, but I do get out there as often as I can afford.
When I was a growing lad, I used to take a 2wd datsun ute to places some modern 4wd owners would freak at, but unfortunately work forced me to leave the farm for a life on computers.
But recently, my wife & I looked to get a 4wd (Suzuki Sierra) which I am sure she now regrets as we took that on a few outings before we realized it was too small, then bought the Tojo.
This is off to Newnes again in next few weeks, so I guess this one gets used for it's designed purpose.

06-05-2003, 02:33 PM
Ussually the 3rd 4wd, by the time you start, your budget and family change, and you become more settled and longer trips become appealing, is the one you deliberate over most.

baby_troupe
06-05-2003, 02:40 PM
The Budget has definitely changed. As for Family...........ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. So far no kids & hopefully not for a while.
Cape York is appealing, but I will need a different vehicle by then as this one has a few too many limiting factors which will require big $$$ to make as capable as something else.

06-05-2003, 02:51 PM
The cape was done in G60's and 40's before.... your bus would do it, just maintain it well before heading off.

baby_troupe
06-05-2003, 02:59 PM
Limited fuel capacity (75 litles)
Limited engine (2LTE 2.4 TD)
Poor fuel economy (last 2 tanks were 18l per 100km on highway)

I am working on the fuel economy part, but as for the other stuff, not important yet.

06-05-2003, 03:01 PM
We did 750km in 6.5 hrs with 285's on the 90 series prado on sunday night, worst was 15lt per 100km, 6 days away over easter 4wding in low range saw 12.5 lt per 100km for the tripo with 285's also.

150 lt factory storage too. :)

baby_troupe
06-05-2003, 03:05 PM
I keep looking at larger fuel tanks, but keep reminding myself that I am only doing short trips at the moment, so spending $700 on a fuel tank is a low priority.
Other contributing factor is the thumb print. I need to be able to justify any mods & as we are still at least 18 months from a cape trip, I know what she will say.

06-05-2003, 03:08 PM
You have left the chain on the sink to long if she can see outside to where you park the car....... ;D

OK, Wooders, I'll bite.
I'm a total newbie on a mission.
Don't give a rip about marque loyalty - just want something to do the job.
Never owned a 4x, never been off road.
Just ordered a 19' Off-Road van. tow weight 2.8-3.0 tonnes.
Need a pre-loved beast to tow the beast. Has to have 3.5t tow weight spec. Prefer 150kw+, 350nM+ turbo intercooled Diesel (I think). Don't want to go as big as a Unimog, or even F250.
Got to be comfortable for the family to tour in (boys 6 & 3). Looking to do mostly van parks & a little easy access camp site stuff for the first year or two till we know what we're doing & the youngun is old enough not to run off into the bush.
OK, you lot, spend my money. I'm listening.
Griff

13-05-2003, 10:30 AM
80 series [factory 24 v diesel turbo] plenty of extra scope by adding intercooler etc, reasonable economy, 140 odd kw. and 400nm and will get 12-14 lt per 100 towing with boat on roof etc.

Great resale, extended warranty would see some still having it just, and if serviced well good for 400k+

You wont find the grunt, the economy, and the "feel" for the money.

baby_troupe
13-05-2003, 10:33 AM
I know you don't want to go big, but for HP to pull that, hummer, suburban, or maybe even ......... I don't want to say it..... Ford Exploder.

wooders
13-05-2003, 12:49 PM
Griffon,

Yeah the Patrol or Cruiser are fair options for your needs......I'd NOT rate a Ford Exploder as being an apt solution.
I know the Ford F250 is a big peice of truck - but it would be one of the best towing rigs out there....However if your not interested in one of those heres my 2 other recomendations for consideration:
Holden Suburban - Great for towing and plenty of room for family & stuff.
Dodge Ram - Ok it's a big dual cab - if you don't want a "ute" then you can get a canopy for the rear.

flappan
13-05-2003, 01:00 PM
With a van that size, you need something BIG.

Its one thing to tow it, the Cruiser and Patrol would do that, BUT to use it offroad, you will need something bigger still.

Thats were the Ram/F250 or Suburban would come in.

13-05-2003, 02:02 PM
unless you wanted to locate parts, add some suspension, bullbar, or change rims tyres because of load ratings etc......

Then all import specials become a pain in the ....you know what.

Griffon
13-05-2003, 06:52 PM
OK, I'm getting the idea that a good 80 series for (mostly) road work for the first couple of years. Then, when we're ready for more serious work, the F250 etc seems the go, though I must say that Ayres Rock seems kind of steep. Do you think that the 250 would be OK to get up there, or should I look at turboing the thing (a 7.3 ltr turbo should be pretty powerful don't you think?)
Griff

13-05-2003, 07:15 PM
if you do your homework you will see a 250 is already turboed........ ::)

wooders
14-05-2003, 09:26 AM
Actually if you really want the tips on towing - get onto one of the yank boards & ask 'em - they'll know what's best for towing (Probably end up with an F-750 ;))....
