mt kembla is locked up as tight as buggery. its been that way for about 10 yrs. BHP and the waterboard made sure of it.

Hey guys,
theres Little River at Bargo, i think the main gate is closed ATM due to grating of fire trails, but we found a back way in a few weeks ago. The main gate had been whinched open by some other guys the other week, but i bet its closed again by now.

Its kind of near Picton. About 40-50 min away from Wollongong. There is a National Park there, and a few tracks around. There is a great fresh water river at the bottom of one of the tracks, which is why its called Little River. We moved up to Wilton from Dapto and some of the locals told us about it. IMO, its not as rough as some of the places we have been in Yawal, but im only in the passenger seat, lol. Its a longer track then Appin though.

What sort of grade track is it?
I'd be keen to check it out!
Can you give any directions on how to get there?

There are some great steps in little river, but even when the gates are open they are off limits. There are no signs and a few scatterred boulders stopping you from going the most direct way to get to the steps. There is a trail that goes to the steps another way with no obsticles. On the information board there is a cartoon with a 4x4 scabbling over a rock mound.
But,
if NPWS turn up and find you at the steps they can fine you $1500 or give a warning, the warning comes later in the form of a letter stating that if you are caught anywhere in a NP that you are not supposed to be you WILL get a $1500 fine, if you are then caught again you are banned from ALL NP's. If you get caught again its off to court.
I think thats the way it worked, its been a while since I got my letter ::)
So basically, yes you can get in there and the signage is $hit, but the chances of actually getting caught are pretty slim, but the last thing I would be doing is talking bout it on a public forum.

There are also a few climbs out the back of Mittagong, could definately kill a few hours out there with a few trucks.
Have you done Six Stage at Yawal.? Easilly fill a day there, not as hard as what people make out.

Whoops, thanks for letting me know Dreads. We have been out there a few times now, ive never seen any signs. We have already had a warning from NPWS for another place, so we would definately get the fine huh... Where are the tracks near Mittagong? We would definately be interested in getting a group together and checking new tracks out if anyone wants to try those climbs out near Mittagong.
Can someone pm me with directions???
Hey Jimbo, your in Well Sprung arent you? My hubby was thinking about coming along to one of your meetings, can you give me any details to pass on to him? Ta..

If you got a verbal warning don't worry, if you got a verbal warning followed by a letter, worry. I have been out there heaps of times, so have lots of people I know, its just that 1 in 50 times you may get done. The steps are very well used but the gate which is a long way from the steps is shut, so there is excuse to give if you get caught. The way we went in there was no sighnage at all, but we still got done.
Wouldn't bother driving a long distance to do the tracks at Mittagong, if you do manage to drive them in one hit it would take less than an hour but havn't seen anything short of 36's and twin lockers and gears drive it in one go. still doable in smaller rigs just takes more time. Having 4 or 5 cars there is the go.
If you link up Mittagong with Wingello it would fill a day. Wingello will take about 25 mins on the freeway from Mittagong. Wingello has some good hill climbs but only challenging if a little wet.

Jimbo, i'll see if hubby wants to be your guide if your interested just have to work out an available weekend soon i guess. His mate just bougt a 60 series, so im sure they will be up for it. They are off to Appin tomorrow...again!
We are thinking of going to Yandaire (spelling?) the ghost town in the Burgarong valley on Oct long weekend, apparently there is a way in through the Oaks (about 20 min from picton) but you have to get permission from NPWS (according to the woman at the information place). Does anyone know if thats true or not? Nobody else i know who knows this area has heard of being allowed in that way.

there used to be access through from Oakdale but apparently they stopped it , we camped down at Yeranderie about a month ago and the caretaker down there said they stopped it, It was the water board who would show you through on there inspection runs, but unfortunatly not anymore. but yerranderie is still worth the drive,
cheers Mark
