25th September 2004 the Casino 4WD club will have a 2 week sojourn in the Simpson. If you are interested, please PM me. We will only have a group of 8 trucks per trip, but more than one group can certainly be arranged. (Come with me, I know the best pubs & the fun tracks).

Hey Blu,
We are planning a trip in June. Sounds like you have done it a few times. What are you experiences with tyres. I will have very limited room and if possible would like to take only 1 spare and a full tyre repair kit. Would this be OK of just stupid.
Will be running MTR's and will be doing the trip from Odnadatta - Birdsville

Tyres are not an issue if you use commonsense. The road from Oodnadatta to the Simpson (via Dalhousie & Purni Bore) is one of the worst you will encounter. The last 60k's or so are clay based and often very corrugated. Just take your time, with sensible pressures. The locals are right in that you must lower your pressures to stop impact damage.
This means you must lower your speed.
The French line and WAA are sand tracks & aren't hard on tyres, but the Rig Road is clay based and often corrugated.
MT/R's are what I used last year & the previous trip was on Radial Claws - both of which are ideal because of their heavy construction.
In the past I've been by myself, so I've taken 2 spares, full repair kit including tubes & used nothing. Do check pressures & inspect tyres every day however.
Have a great time - this is one of the most special parts of Oz.

G'day bbushy. Hoping to do my 5th trip up the CSR myself sometime about then - depends on how long I have to sit on the tractor at seeding time. It's a fantastic trip - try and do the lateral diversions, if you've got the time. eg out to the Calvert Range. Hope you have a good one.

Bbushy,
I've tried to PM last night several times, but the server or something ate my messages.
Peter Arthur & I have got about 12 trucks doing a low key fun run in Sept. which has added about 4 new members to our small club.
We should discuss it when you come up for the Kidney run. You and your teammate are welcome to stay at our house if you want to. I would regard it as a privilege to return the hospitality you showed me last year
Planning a double crossing in July, like a figure 8, sort of, and maybe a trip up the Hay river, to Lake Caroline in Aug-Sept.

2 spare tyres, 2 jerries of water are the bare minimum.
And 20L more fuel than you believe you could possibly need.

Two spares are certainly the minimum if you are travelling solo.
The size of the group and the commonality of tyre size will have an impact. I always carry a proper plug and chemical vulcanising kit, along with tubes to suit the groups tyre sizes. (Obviously with bead breaker & levers & at least 2 quality compressors.)
Modern RV tyres of proper light truck construction will generally be quite robust & if pressures are chosen carefully will normally surprise you with their durability.
THESE COMMENTS TO NOT APPLY TO ANY 245/70R16, 265/70R16 or 275/70R16 AS FITTED TO MOST MEDIUM TO LARGE 4WD SOLD IN OZ TO-DAY.
I would strongly recommend not using this type of tyre for any outback touring!
Your comments about fuel & water are probably conservative.
